Chapter 499 Sweating
Fern looked confused. "Retake the test?"
Katherine nodded. "Yeah, since it's a tie, let's do it again to find a winner. We can explain it to the media and the live stream audience."
Fern hesitated. "Well..."
Just then, Camlia stormed onto the stage. "Katherine, are you a sore loser?"
Katherine smirked. "We both got perfect scores, so I didn't lose!"
Camlia shot back, "Even with perfect scores, everyone thinks Fern is better! And you want a retest? The teacher has to make new questions. You think a retest happens just because you want it?"
Katherine smiled. "I didn't say the teacher has to make new questions. We don't need new ones for a retest."
Camlia was confused. "If we don't need new questions, what's the point? We'll just get perfect scores again. Are we racing to finish first?"
The media below were puzzled too.
"Yeah, what's the point of retaking the same test?"
"Katherine's just refusing to admit defeat! If they both get perfect scores again, will she ask for another retest? When does it end?"
"Can't she just admit she's not as good and apologize?"
Hearing the chatter, Katherine raised her voice. "We don't need new questions; just change the values in the original ones, and we can retake the test."
The crowd was even more confused.
"What is this?"
"Katherine, can't you just accept reality?"
"The questions stay the same, only the values change. The formulas don't change, so what's the point?"
Katherine twirled a pen. "It matters. Someone who really understands the material won't be thrown off by different values. If we both get perfect scores again, I'll admit defeat."
Everyone exchanged glances.
"Fern, take the test with her! You're a genius. You have nothing to fear! Retake it and show her up!"
"Yeah, retake it! Fern, we all support you!"
"She said it herself! If it's a tie again, she'll admit defeat! Take the test with her!"
Fern, feeling the pressure, was stuck.
Katherine twirled her pen and looked at her. "Fern, you're not scared to retake the test, are you?"
Fern stayed silent.
She had only memorized one set of answers. If the values changed, she wouldn't know what to do! What now?
Seeing this, Camlia stepped in with disdain. "Fern is tired. She doesn't have the energy to retake the test with you!"
Katherine eyed Fern. "That doesn't add up. Someone who does physical labor all day shouldn't be tired after one test."
Camlia snapped, "Her brain is tired, not her body!"
Katherine shrugged. "It won't take long. Just changing the values doesn't take much thinking."
Camlia wanted to argue, but the media, hungry for drama, pushed for the retest.
Fern and Camlia were stuck.
The live stream was buzzing with support for a retest; everyone wanted to see Katherine admit defeat!
The audience was so enthusiastic that the host felt they had to go through with it. He said, "Since everyone wants a retest, let's have the teacher who made the test come back, change the values, print two new copies, and let them retake it!"
Camlia knew they couldn't avoid it and looked worried.
Fern whispered, "Mom, what do I do? I don't know how to solve these problems."
Camlia gave her a disappointed glare and whispered harshly, "Didn't you memorize the answers? Just use the same formulas. You can't solve them with different values?"
"Mom, I can't." Fern had only memorized the answers and didn't know the formulas.
Camlia was about to give more instructions when the host approached. "Camlia, please wait offstage. Fern needs to prepare for the test!"
Camlia had no choice but to step down, hoping Fern could pull through.
Under the media and live stream audience's watchful eyes, the teacher changed the values, printed two new copies, and handed them to the host to give to the contestants.
The retest began.
Fern stared at the new values, feeling lost, and tried to recall the memorized answers, hoping they would fit.
Katherine twirled her pen for a bit before starting.
To the media, Fern seemed more serious than Katherine, who looked relaxed. The live stream audience thought the same; Katherine seemed like she was just playing around!
But to everyone's surprise, Katherine finished first.
She turned in her test in about twenty minutes. Having done it once, changing the values didn't take much effort.
Everyone thought Fern should be almost done too, but she hadn't even finished half. She was sweating, counting on her fingers.
Some viewers found it odd.
[What's up with Fern? Katherine finished ages ago. Why isn't she done yet?]
[She's sweating a lot. Is she really struggling with the new problems?]
[No way! She must be feeling unwell or hot!]
[But she really looks like she's having trouble with the questions.]
