Chapter 684 No One Commands Me
Seeing the necklace, Carl lost it. He couldn't keep his cool, even with his hand on the interrogation room table. He jumped up and yelled at Alex, "Give me back the necklace!"
He'd risked everything going back to the ruins just to find that necklace. It was his mom's keepsake and the only photo he had with her.
Hearing the ruckus, the officer outside rushed in to hold Carl back. "Calm down."
Carl, teeth clenched, glared at Alex. "Give me back the necklace."
Alex just swung the necklace around, looking all cold and detached. "So, you gonna tell me who sent you?"
Carl shot back, "No one sent me. I just want to kill you myself."
Alex could tell this guy really wanted him dead.
Carl was one of his dad's illegitimate kids from some affair, making him Alex's half-brother.
Carl hadn't had much schooling and had been a street thug since he was young.
Lately, he'd gathered a crew and gained some local clout.
It was hard to believe he didn't have someone backing him.
Alex wasn't in a rush. He pocketed the necklace and stood up. "Looks like you don't want this necklace that badly, so forget it."
With that, Alex turned to leave the interrogation room.
Seeing Alex about to leave, Carl got even more frantic. "Stop. Give me back the necklace. Alex, you damn jerk. Give it back!"
Alex didn't stop. "When you decide to tell the truth, then ask me for the necklace."
"Alex. Don't go. Give me back the necklace."
Outside the police station, Leander was already waiting at the entrance. When he saw Alex, he stepped forward and said, "Mr. Melville, you haven't slept for two days. You should go home and rest."
Alex looked tired. He rubbed his temples and glanced up at the moon. "Leander, is that barbecue place she likes still open at this hour?"
Leander knew exactly who Alex meant. "It should still be open."
Alex headed towards the car. "Take me there."
Leander followed. "Yes, sir."
The Mitchell mansion was buzzing for the first time in a while as Frank, Ambrosia, and Teresa had all come over.
They gathered around the living room sofa, eating and chatting, asking Katherine about her kidnapping.
Katherine gave them a quick rundown and then sipped the warm milk Bernard handed her, lost in thought.
It was already past 3 AM, a time when everyone should be asleep.
But no one felt sleepy.
Suddenly, Katherine's phone buzzed. She opened it to see a message from Alex: [Are you asleep?]
After a moment, Katherine typed back: [No. What's up?]
Alex replied instantly: [I'm at the door. I bought you some barbecue. Can you come out and get it?]
Katherine felt a bit moved, but she still refused.
A few seconds later, Alex texted back: [If you don't want to see me, that's cool. Just have one of the Mitchell family servants come out and get it.]
Katherine frowned. She knew Alex well enough to know he wouldn't leave until the food was taken inside.
He was always so stubborn, never caring about others' opinions and always pushing his way.
At the Mitchell mansion's entrance.
Alex got out of the car and looked into the mansion's yard, waiting for someone to come out and get the food.
Leander also got out, standing beside Alex with the packaged barbecue.
Instead of someone from the Mitchell family, a car with its high beams on approached from a distance.
The blinding lights made it hard to see.
The car stopped at the mansion's gate, and after turning off the headlights, Jonathan got out.
He walked towards Alex. "Alex, I just heard from Bernard that you're back. How are you? Are you okay?"
Alex nodded slightly. "I'm fine."
Jonathan smiled, "Good to hear. But what are you doing here in the middle of the night?"
Alex's expression didn't change. "Waiting for someone."
Jonathan frowned slightly, and after thinking for a moment, he asked, "Are you waiting for Katherine?"
Alex didn't respond.
Jonathan took his silence as confirmation. He looked at the quiet mansion yard and kindly said, "Alex, Katherine doesn't want to see you. I think you shouldn't force her." His gaze fell on the package in Leander's hand. "Is that for Katherine? Do you want me to take it in for you?"
Alex said, "No need. If you're going in, just go in."
Jonathan shrugged indifferently. "Alright, I'll go in and try to persuade Katherine to at least send someone out to get it."
Alex narrowed his eyes slightly but said nothing.
Jonathan was about to turn and drive into the mansion yard when he heard a voice from inside. "Ms. Galatea, it's cold at night. Mr. Bernard Mitchell asked you to wear this coat."
Hearing this, Jonathan stopped and looked back to see Katherine coming out with a sweater.
He frowned, feeling a bit disappointed.
Katherine, with her pregnant belly, walked slowly to the mansion gate and looked at Alex standing there. She extended her hand. "The barbecue. Give it to me."
Seeing that Katherine had come out to get the food herself, a faint smile appeared on Alex's face as he took the barbecue from Leander and handed it to her. "It's from the place you used to like."
Katherine took it. "Thanks."
Alex frowned at her gratitude and sighed in resignation. "It's so late, and you're still up. Are Frank and the others here?"
He had seen Frank's car parked in the mansion yard.
Katherine nodded. "Yes, no one is sleepy, so we're chatting in the living room."
Upon hearing this, a deep and unprecedented sadness filled Alex's eyes. In moments like these, he should have been the one beside her.
But Katherine still hadn't accepted him because that issue hadn't been resolved.
Well, at least she had someone to talk to.
