Chapter 159 She Was Arrested
Alex's lips still held the straw, sipping water absentmindedly, without saying a word.
He remained silent, and Scarlett thought he hadn't heard her. She moved closer and tugged at his sleeve. "Alex, what's wrong?"
Alex continued to stay silent, not even glancing at her, lost in his own thoughts.
Seeing Scarlett being ignored, Bernard walked over, shielding her with his arm. He glared at Alex before turning to Katherine, who was lying on the hospital bed, and said, "Ms. Galatea, considering you helped my grandfather the other day, I believe you're not inherently bad. You'd lend a hand to a stranger in need. But when something threatens your own interests, you're not so kind. No matter who it is, you can be ruthless. Am I right?"
Katherine furrowed her brows in confusion and looked at him. "Scarlett threatens my interests? What interests?"
Bernard squinted. "You think my sister's return threatens your position as Mrs. Melville, so you harbored ill intentions, didn't you?"
Katherine was taken aback for a moment, then laughed. "If she wants this position, I can step down anytime."
Alex's brows furrowed slightly.
Bernard was momentarily stunned, then a mocking smile appeared on his refined face. "Ms. Galatea, pretending to be magnanimous now won't lessen your suspicion of committing a crime."
Katherine remained calm, even with handcuffs on, she leaned leisurely against the headboard. "I'm not being magnanimous; I simply don't care about this position. Whoever wants it can have it!"
Hearing her words, Alex bit down on the straw, his expression darkening.
Aside from Alex, Bernard, and almost everyone else in the room thought Katherine was pretending to be noble!
How many women in the world could resist the allure of being associated with Alex, of becoming Mrs. Melville of the prestigious Melville Manor, and basking in the wealth and power that Alex could provide?
Especially someone like Katherine, a country girl who had never seen much in her life. She must be dreaming of changing her fate every day!
Now that Katherine had the chance to sit in this position, how could she easily let go? How could she be willing to step down?
Saying such things only made her seem more hypocritical!
Bernard smirked and said, "Ms. Galatea, it's not too late to turn back. Are you sure you want to keep being stubborn? I'll give you one more chance. If you admit now that you hired someone to harm my sister, I can consider the fact that you helped my grandfather and sign a letter of understanding so that the court might reduce your sentence."
Katherine yawned and replied, "Thanks for your kindness, Mr. Mitchell, but I don't need it!"
Bernard's elegant brows furrowed as he looked at her fearless attitude, then he smiled lightly. "Alright, since Ms. Galatea doesn't care, you can wait for the harshest sentence."
At this moment, a police officer closed his notebook and stood up. "Mr. Mitchell, thank you for your assistance in our investigation. We need you to come to the station later to go over your evidence collection process with us."
Bernard nodded. "Sure, no problem."
Then, the officer turned around, took out another pair of handcuffs, walked over, and cuffed one of Katherine's slender ankles to the bed rail to prevent her from escaping. He then sternly informed her, "Katherine, we have both witness and material evidence against you. Denying it won't help! Once you're well enough to be discharged, we will formally arrest you!"
Katherine snorted lightly, "Whatever!"
Seeing Katherine's indifferent attitude, the officer was a bit annoyed and was about to say something when he heard the faint sound of a chair scraping against the floor behind him. Someone had stood up!
The officer instinctively knew who it was. He turned around and, sure enough, saw Alex already on his feet, his tall figure walking towards him.
Alex was expressionless, and anyone who saw him would instinctively step back!
The officer felt immense pressure, quickly organizing his thoughts to explain to Mr. Melville why Katherine had to be handcuffed. After all, he had gathered from the earlier confrontation that Katherine was supposed to be Alex's wife!
However, Alex said nothing. He simply walked past the officer, placed the cup he was holding back on the bedside table.
One end of the straw in the cup was flattened, bearing his teeth marks.
After setting down the cup, Alex stood by the bed, looking down at Katherine with a deep, complex gaze that was hard to read.
Faced with Alex's silent stare, Katherine's indifferent attitude wavered slightly.
She furrowed her brows, glanced at him, then lowered her eyes and muttered, "I didn't do it."
"I know." Alex's tone was calm, without a hint of doubt.
Katherine was taken aback and looked up at him again. What did he mean by "I know"? The evidence was complete, yet Alex didn't doubt her?
But he said nothing more, making it impossible to guess his thoughts.
Katherine furrowed her brows, shifted her gaze from Alex to the officer, and said, "Excuse me, Sir, I should be allowed to see my lawyer now, right?"
The officer, maintaining a professional attitude, nodded. "Yes, you can."
Katherine said, "Then please hand me my phone. I need to call my lawyer."
Alex spoke up, "I have a lawyer. I'll have them..."
Katherine's brows furrowed stubbornly. "No, I have my own lawyer. I don't want to trouble you!"
Alex's expression darkened. He coldly handed her the phone from the table without saying anything further and then turned and left.
As soon as Alex left, Scarlett's eyes followed him, and she tried to break free from Bernard's arm to follow him.
Bernard, not wanting Scarlett to go after Alex alone, gave Katherine a cold glance before leaving with Scarlett.
The officers, having finished their work and ensured the 'suspect' was securely handcuffed, also left.
With fewer people in the room, Sunny suddenly stepped forward, glaring angrily at Katherine, his youthful eyes seemingly on fire.
Seeing Sunny's expression, Katherine raised an eyebrow. "What? Want to hit me?"
Sunny growled, "Katherine, I'm so disappointed in you!"
Katherine chuckled lightly, "Well, then drown in your disappointment!"
Sunny gritted his teeth. "You..."
"Sunny, let's not bother with her! The police will deal with her later!" Sophie walked over, giving Katherine a disdainful and triumphant look before pulling the disappointed and angry Sunny out of the room.
Once everyone had left, Katherine picked up her phone and dialed Frank's secure number. "Frank, have the legal department's lawyer come to the hospital to see me."
Frank was puzzled and asked, "Katherine, why are you at the hospital? What happened?"
"It's not a big deal. Just send the lawyer over; you don't need to come," answered she.
Frank said, "Alright, I understand!"
