Chapter 481 Falling into the Opponent's Hands
Alex squinted his eyes, stayed quiet, and pulled out a chair to sit down.
Jackie and Sandra looked at Nathan, who was defending Katherine.
Fiona glanced at Nathan, then at her brother's unhappy face, wanting to tug Nathan's clothes to make him stop.
Jackie cleared his throat. "Nathan, you say you can vouch for her? How?"
Nathan replied firmly, "Katherine was a National Merit Scholar with top SAT scores. Prestigious universities wanted her. Our principal personally recruited her. If she had used someone else's scores, she wouldn't have kept up her grades. But she excelled and made us proud."
”When those rumors came out yesterday, our school's students were baffled. Many spoke up for Katherine online, but our voices got drowned out.“
”Sir, if you don't believe me, you can send someone to our school to investigate or ask our former principal."
Jackie furrowed his brows, looking between Katherine and Nathan. "We'll verify this with Janetrick University. If you're telling the truth, fine. But if not, we won't tolerate any lies."
Nathan wanted to say more, but Katherine interrupted. "Nathan, thanks for speaking up, but it's breakfast time. Let's eat first."
She pulled out a chair and sat next to Alex, picking up utensils to start eating.
Nathan frowned. "Katherine, I..."
Katherine calmly said, "Nathan, you're here as Fiona's tutor. Focus on that. Don't worry about other things."
Nathan still wanted to speak, but Fiona handed him a glass of milk and tugged at his clothes. "Nathan, have some milk first!"
Alex already looked pissed. If Nathan said more, Alex's glare could freeze someone from across the room.
Sandra, trying to ease the tension, smiled and said, "Katherine, try the oatmeal porridge Grandma made. How do you like it?"
Katherine stirred the porridge, took a spoonful, blew on it, tasted it, and nodded. "It's delicious. Grandma's cooking is as good as ever!"
Sandra beamed with joy.
Next to her, Jackie snorted. "So young, yet so good at flattering people!"
Katherine glanced at Jackie, smiled slightly, and said nothing. She wasn't flattering Sandra; she genuinely thought it tasted good.
Jackie already made it clear he didn't like her, so whatever she did would be a problem for him.
She could be polite to her elders, but she wasn't a people-pleaser. If someone didn't like her, it didn't matter.
Sandra felt awkward, glared at Jackie, sighed, and said, "Katherine, don't mind him. If you like it, have some more. There's plenty in the kitchen!"
Katherine didn't take Jackie's attitude to heart and smiled. "Okay, thanks!"
While eating, her phone vibrated twice. She checked it while continuing to eat.
It was a message from Frank.
Frank: [Katherine, AYE, Lillian and Sherry met Scarlett in a park this morning. Scarlett gave them a suitcase, probably full of cash.]
He sent a picture.
Katherine wasn't surprised and kept eating, opening the photo. It showed Scarlett handing a black suitcase to Sherry.
Alex moved beside her, getting up and making the chair scrape.
He had only eaten a few bites before grabbing his coat and saying a brief goodbye before leaving.
Seeing him about to leave, Katherine took a sip of water, got up, and said, "I have something to do and need to go out with Alex. Enjoy your breakfast."
She turned to Nathan and Fiona. "You two eat more, then focus on tutoring and studying."
Then she followed Alex out the door.
Outside, Alex glanced coldly at Katherine. "Why are you following me?"
Katherine raised an eyebrow. "Can't I follow you if I have nothing to do?"
Alex snorted, "Your junior classmate is here, and you still have eyes for me? Wouldn't it be easier to meet behind my back if you stayed home?"
Katherine knew Alex's mood during breakfast was because of this. She shrugged. "Alex, didn't we talk about this? Nathan is Fiona's crush. I brought him to tutor her to create opportunities! Otherwise, with Fiona's idle state, if she ends up with an unworthy guy, you'll be the one worrying as her brother!"
Alex gave her a sidelong glance, still heavy. "You found me a brother-in-law who covets my wife, and I'm even more worried!"
Katherine twitched her mouth. "Teenage boys often have unrealistic fantasies. I'm not even familiar with him! Alex, just like us, we weren't each other's ideal type before, but we still ended up together, didn't we?"
"Yeah, I ended up completely in your hands!" Alex's face finally warmed a bit. He draped his coat over her shoulders. "Running out without a coat? You never let me stop worrying!"
