Chapter 501 Stealing the Exam Questions
Surrounded by the media with their long and short lenses pointed at her face, Camlia had nowhere to hide. Finally, unable to take it anymore, she flew into a fit of rage.
She cursed loudly as she charged at the media, breaking through the crowd like a madwoman. She grabbed Fern and quickly ran off the stage in the opposite direction to escape!
Some of the media members chased after them with their cameras, while others stayed behind to interview Katherine.
Somebody inquired, "Katherine, they've run away. Don't you plan to use the law to sue them?"
Another suggested, "Yes! You should sue them and make them pay for their slanderous actions!"
One added, "Make them publicly apologize and compensate you for the damage to your reputation!"
Katherine was still sitting at her exam desk, one arm resting lazily on the table, looking disinterested. She said, "Forget it. They're just pawns being used by someone else. Besides, they don't have the money to compensate me for the damage to my reputation, so why waste time on them?"
A reporter picked up on the implication of Katherine's words.
The reporter asked, "Do you mean that someone is behind this mother-daughter duo, orchestrating a smear campaign against you? Who could it be? An enemy of yours?"
Katherine raised an eyebrow, curiously. She insinuated, "You media folks are smart. Do you really think their goal was just to smear me? Think about it, who suffered the most in this situation?"
The media suddenly had an epiphany!
Somebody exclaimed, "It's the Melville Group!"
Someone chimed in, "Yes! The Melville Group suffered the most! Their stock has plummeted over the past few days!"
Another probed, "So, it was the Melville Group's rival who instigated this media war?"
Katherine slightly pursed her lips as if to restrain herself from commenting further, which was taken as a tacit agreement.
Deep down, she knew very well that this was Scarlett's doing, a personal attack aimed squarely at her. But in doing so, Scarlett had to drag the Melville Group into the fray.
Katherine led the media to believe the mastermind was targeting the Melville Group, hoping to leverage their guilt to clear up public misunderstandings. The media's power was immense; their statements carried more weight and reach than any official company statement.
At this moment, another reporter stepped forward with a cameraman filming her directly, asking, "Katherine, is your relationship with Alex really as rumored online?"
Katherine was about to answer when her phone suddenly rang, interrupting her.
She took out her phone, glanced at the screen and saw it was Alex calling.
Katherine answered the call, and the man's deep, serious voice came through, "Don't say too much to the media. Come over, the car is parked on the small road behind the park's rock garden."
Katherine squinted slightly with suspicion. This call came at just the right time. Was he afraid she would publicly disclose their relationship to the media?
Although she hadn't planned to directly answer the reporter's question, his intervention still left her feeling a bit uneasy.
After a moment of silence, she asked, "You're still at the park and didn't go to the office?"
Alex responded calmly, "I was worried about you being here alone. Alright, the exam is over. Come get in the car."
Katherine nodded in agreement, and replied, "Okay, I'm coming."
Katherine hung up the phone, stood up, and bid farewell to the reporters before quickly disappearing from their sight.
As she left, she heard a persistent reporter asking, "Why did you leave in such a hurry? Who was that call from? Was it Alex?"
Katherine didn't look back and continued walking away.
Meanwhile, in the Melville family, Jackie and Sandra had just finished watching the live broadcast, and their expressions had changed significantly. One looked relieved, and the other let out a sigh of relief.
Sandra, with a hint of pride in her granddaughter-in-law's performance, nudged Jackie with her elbow as she boasted, "See, I told you Katherine would never do such deceitful things! It's clear someone was trying to frame her, and you fell for it!"
Jackie had already figured it out but still couldn't let go of his arrogance. He snorted, "Why would they frame her and not someone else? It's because she has her own issues and has offended people outside!"
Sandra glared at Jackie. Then she warned, "That's classic victim-blaming! I'm telling you, I have absolute faith in Katherine; she's a good person! If you ever treat her poorly again, I'll divorce you!"
Jackie was genuinely taken aback. He never expected to hear the word "divorce" from Sandra at his age.
"Are you threatening me? Fine, let's get divorced. Who's afraid of who?" Jackie said proudly, not believing in Sandra's threats.
Sandra stood up angrily. "Alright! No time like the present, let's go get the paperwork done now!" she exclaimed.
With the conversation escalating to this point, Jackie couldn't back down even if he didn't want to.
He remained silent for a long time, then clutched his chest and groaned as if he was having a heart attack. "I can't, my chest hurts. The medicine... get me the medicine..." he said, weakly.
Seeing this, Sandra was genuinely frightened. "Quick... someone come! He's having a heart attack! Get the medicine quickly!" she yelled, frantically.
As Sandra supported him with concern, Jackie smiled satisfaction but he continued to feign unconsciousness.
On the other side, the atmosphere in the Mitchell household was tense.
Scarlett and Alice were furious about Katherine's unexpected turn of events, while Vincent and Hellen appeared quite relaxed..
Vincent said, "I told you, Katherine is definitely not that kind of person! It turns out they were slandering her!"
Hellen glanced at Alice and Scarlett. "Exactly! They didn't just slander her out of nowhere; someone was behind it, teaching them what to do!" she added.
Alice understood the implication in Hellen's words but didn't dare to speak up.
Scarlett felt that she was beyond redemption this time, but she was unwilling to give up her last bit of resistance. Stubbornly, she retorted,"I think Katherine is very cunning. Her request for a retest might have been premeditated."
Vincent snorted heavily, "What do you mean? Are you saying Katherine cheated? How could she cheat in front of so many media and live cameras? I should be asking you two, did you steal the exam questions from me and give Camlia and Fern the correct answers?"
