Chapter 245 Scarlett Even Uses Charles!
Scarlett had a vulnerable, doe-eyed look that made everyone want to protect her.
"But..." she started.
Sophie stepped up, knocked on Katherine's desk, crossed her arms, and said, "Katherine, listen up! Charles is napping on the couch in Bernard's office. Scarlett and I are stepping out for a bit and will be back soon. If anything happens to Charles while we're gone, it's on you!"
Katherine didn't even look up and was about to refuse.
But Sophie didn't give her the chance and grabbed Scarlett's hand.
"Scarlett, let's go!" Sophie called out.
Katherine frowned and looked up, only to see Scarlett and Sophie hurrying into the elevator.
Sophie was one thing, but how could Scarlett, a mom, be so relaxed leaving her kid with someone she didn't get along with?
Something weird was definitely going on!
Katherine didn't care about Scarlett's business, but Mr. Mitchell had just stepped out to take a call, and the office was empty. Therefoe, leaving a kid alone wasn't safe.
After thinking it over, Katherine took her laptop into the CEO's office.
The little boy, Charles, was indeed sleeping soundly on the couch, covered with Scarlett's jacket, just like Sophie had said.
Worried about waking him, Katherine tiptoed over and placed her laptop on the coffee table.
Seizing the moment, she approached Bernard's desk, pulled out a high-resolution mini camera and snapped a picture of the photo featuring his mom in the frame. After saving it, she discreetly stashed the camera away.
Katherine settled on the couch, not far from the kid, and got back to translating documents. She'd glance up now and then to check if Charles had woken up or slipped off the couch.
Bernard never came back during this time. Over an hour flew by, and Katherine finally finished translating, stretching with a big yawn.
Seeing Charles still asleep, she leaned back on the couch to rest her eyes.
Before long, she heard the kid whimpering and immediately looked over.
Scarlett's son had opened his eyes and sat up, looking around, probably searching for his mom.
When he saw Katherine, he suddenly looked terrified and burst into tears!
Katherine was startled by his loud crying and was momentarily at a loss, not understanding why.
Even though she was pregnant, she had no experience comforting children.
"Um... Don’t cry, your mom will be back soon, don't cry!" she said.
The one-year-old, unable to speak clearly, didn't get what she was saying and kept crying.
Katherine stood to soothe him, but Charles cried louder when he saw her, reacting as if she were a scary monster!
Helpless, Katherine had to stop and not get any closer. "Okay, I won't come over, but please don't cry, okay?"
Charles didn't listen at all, climbing off the couch and stumbling towards the door.
Katherine couldn't let a small child run out alone, so she quickly followed him. "Wait."
At that moment, Scarlett and Sophie walked in, carrying a bunch of shopping bags and chatting.
Sophie said, "Scarlett, the dress you helped me pick out is so beautiful. I love it! I'll wear it to Aunt Victoria's birthday party tomorrow!"
Scarlett replied, "I think it's gorgeous too! Sophie, you'll definitely be the star of the party in that dress tomorrow!"
Seeing his mom return, Charles became even more emotional, running towards her frantically, only to fall and cry even harder.
Scarlett was startled and quickly went over to pick him up. "Charles, what's wrong?"
Charles clung to his mom's neck, seeking comfort in her arms, still crying nonstop.
"Charles, tell Mommy what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Scarlett asked.
A one-year-old couldn't express his experiences and feelings except by crying.
Scarlett, worried, checked his body. When she rolled up his sleeve, she found his arm covered in bruises, shocking to see!
Scarlett's heart ached, and her eyes instantly reddened. "How... how did this happen?"
Charles just kept crying, his small body trembling.
Sophie was also shocked by the bruises and immediately turned her accusing gaze to Katherine, the only other person in the office.
"It was you! Katherine, you must have abused Charles while we were gone!" she shouted.
"I didn't." Katherine was puzzled. Such a small child, the beloved son of Alex and Scarlett, who would dare to harm him?
Sophie glared at her viciously. "You say you didn't? You were the only one here with Charles the whole time. If it wasn't you, who else could it be?"
Katherine remained calm. "Miss Jones, you need evidence to make accusations."
Sophie sneered and shot back, "Evidence? You were the only one in the office. That's the strongest evidence!"
Heartbroken, Scarlett,, picked up her son and looked at Katherine with tearful, angry eyes. "Katherine, I only asked you to watch my child briefly. Even if you were unhappy, there was no need to treat the child this way! I trusted you."
Trust? Scarlett said she trusted her? What a joke!
Seeing Scarlett's convincing performance, Katherine instantly understood that this was another trap Scarlett had set.
But who would have thought she would be so ruthless as to use her son?!
At that moment, Bernard returned, and as soon as he walked in, he saw Scarlett and Charles crying. His handsome brow furrowed. "What's going on?"
"Bernard!" Scarlett called out.
Holding Charles, Scarlett threw herself into Bernard's arms, crying in grievance and despair.
Bernard, not knowing what had happened, looked down at Scarlett and Charles, who were both crying heavily, feeling heartbroken. "Scarlett, what's wrong? What happened?"
Sophie angrily stepped forward to complain, "Bernard, you're just in time! Katherine abused Charles while Scarlett and I were out! Look, Charles is covered in bruises from her pinching him, and he's been crying in pain! It's so pitiful!"
As she spoke, Sophie lifted Charles's clothes to show him.
Bernard's brow furrowed deeply as he saw the bruises on Charles's body. His gentle eyes turned cold as he looked at Katherine.
"Ms. Galatea, do you have any humanity left? How could you do this to a child?" he reprimanded.
