Chapter 349 Their Future
Katherine sat on the clean kitchen counter, pampered by Alex, who wouldn't let her lift a finger.
Watching his clumsy knife skills, she teased, "Alex, you're a grown man and still can't cook?"
He glanced up. "Do you think I need to?"
Katherine raised an eyebrow. A guy born with a silver spoon didn't need to worry about these things.
"Maybe not before, but you should learn to cook and do laundry now," she said, crossing her arms.
Alex kept chopping tomatoes, smirking. "Why's that?"
"Because if you want a family, you need to take care of your wife and kids," she replied.
He snorted. "Even if I can't cook or do laundry, I won't let you do it either. I'll hire someone. And I'll take care of you in ways no one else can."
Katherine blushed but pretended not to understand his innuendo. "I don't like strangers around all the time. I'm not used to so many servants. I prefer a family atmosphere. If you want to live with me, you need to get used to a life without servants. And I'm not your maid!"
Alex paused, looking at her with narrowed eyes. She was tough and demanding, but she was thinking about their future. Wasn't that the sweetest way to express love?
He tapped her nose gently. "Alright, I'll be your free maid, cook, and cleaner. Is that good enough?"
Katherine wrinkled her nose. "Alex, your hands smell like onions!"
He pinched her nose on purpose. "It's from cooking for you, silly!"
She slapped his hand away. "Then hurry up and cook. I'm starving!"
He stopped teasing and asked, "What's next?"
Katherine looked at the chopped veggies. "Heat some oil, sauté the onions until soft, then add tomatoes and vegetable broth. Your Cream of Tomato Soup will be ready."
Alex followed her instructions. Despite never cooking before, his business experience made him efficient. Under her guidance, he managed each step smoothly.
Watching him sauté onions, Katherine smiled, feeling warmth and clarity. Though she had been reluctant when Alex brought her to Melville Manor, watching him now, she felt an unexpected sense of security and warmth.
Katherine had been left with relatives in the countryside since she was a kid. They didn't want to take care of her, so she grew up eating charity meals at the church.
She never felt like she belonged anywhere, always feeling rootless.
But with Alex, she felt a sense of security and belonging she couldn't describe. She felt she could tease him without holding back.
"How does it taste?" Alex's deep voice broke her thoughts.
Katherine snapped back to reality and saw him holding a spoonful of freshly made Cream of Tomato Soup. She opened her mouth, ready to taste it.
Before she could, she noticed a group of servants peeking in by the kitchen door, looking shocked.
Only the butler, Anton, seemed calm.
Katherine forced a smile. "Why don't you all come in and try it too?"
Alex followed her gaze, his expression cold.
The servants quickly straightened up, waved their hands, and retreated. They wouldn't dare eat food made by Alex!
Katherine was impressive, making Alex, who never cooked, willingly make food for her. Unbelievable!
The servants dispersed, and Anton left with a satisfied smile. It was good to have Katherine back. Alex finally seemed more approachable!
God knew how terrifying Alex had been while Katherine was gone. The atmosphere in Melville Manor had been suffocating.
Now, with Katherine back, the place felt alive again.
With no one watching, Katherine finally tasted the soup.
Alex fed her another spoonful, smiling. "So, does it meet your satisfaction?"
Katherine smacked her lips. "For your first time, it's pretty good, but there's room for improvement!"
Hoping for a compliment, Alex pretended to be displeased and ate the next spoonful himself.
Katherine frowned. "Alex, why are you eating my soup?"
He snorted. "Didn't you say it needs improvement? If it's not good, why eat it?"
Katherine whined, "I'm hungry!"
Alex, with a stern face, refused to let her eat.
Katherine adapted quickly, smiling sweetly. "You're amazing! So impressive! Can I have the soup now?"
Alex held the bowl out of her reach but leaned in close, his breath warm against her ear. "Oh? Tell me exactly what you find impressive about me."
Katherine blushed. "Just... there."
She took the opportunity to snatch the bowl, turning her back on him. "It's all mine now!"
Alex chuckled, letting her eat at her own pace.
For his first time cooking, her enthusiastic response was encouraging.
Just then, his phone rang.
Alex glanced at the caller ID, his expression darkening, and instinctively looked at Katherine.
She didn't need to ask who it was. She kept eating and pouted. "Is it Scarlett? Why not answer?"
