Chapter 417 Face the Future Together
When Scarlett heard "miscarriage," her eyes lit up!
Alice was right; tonight's dinner was the perfect chance. She could sneak saffron into Katherine's food, and the baby wouldn't make it!
But after several failed attempts, Scarlett was getting nervous. "What if she figures out it was the saffron?"
Alice, confident, said, "Don't worry. If she finds out, I'll just say it was me. I didn't know she was pregnant. I was just trying to help her skin. It wasn't on purpose!"
With her mom's reassurance, Scarlett felt better. "Mom, wait here. I'll get the saffron! Make sure to add a lot so Katherine will bleed heavily!"
Meanwhile, in Laura's room, Katherine was lying on a child's bed, looking around.
She stayed to see if she could remember anything.
But apart from a sense of familiarity and some fragmented memories from a broken music box, nothing else clicked.
Suddenly, her phone rang with a video call.
Katherine picked it up. It was Alex checking in!
"What are you doing?" His voice was low and deep.
On the other end, Alex was flipping through documents, occasionally glancing at her.
He was clearly busy but still took the time to check on her. How worried could he be?
Katherine lazily replied, "Just lying down and resting. About to nap."
Alex frowned, looking seriously at her through the video. "Did you forget what I told you?"
Katherine said, "I didn't! No eating strange food, no sleeping outside, no drinking, especially now!"
Alex snorted. "And you still plan to nap at someone else's house?"
Katherine pouted. "I'm just tired. I haven't slept yet! Bernard said this was my childhood room."
Thinking of the hardships Katherine might have faced, Alex's eyes showed a hint of pain. "So what if it is? Are you planning to move back in?"
Katherine shook her head. "No, I just want to see if I can remember anything from my childhood."
"If you can't remember, then don't try. Forgetting unpleasant things is fine. With me by your side, just focus on the future."
Alex rarely said such sentimental things, and Katherine felt warm inside. She teased him, "Alex! Saying mushy stuff at work, won't your employees think you're crazy?"
Alex glared playfully. "You know I only say these things to you. Aren't you going to respond?"
Katherine laughed, blew him a kiss, and said, "Alex, love you!"
Alex's stern face softened instantly. "Naughty! Call me if you need anything. I'll come get you."
Katherine nodded. "Okay! Bye!"
With that, she hung up without waiting for a response.
On the other end, Alex chuckled bitterly. That girl! She always hung up so quickly!
But Katherine hadn't hung up on purpose; she heard a noise outside the window. She didn't mention it to avoid worrying Alex.
After hanging up, she got up, opened the window, and looked out. "Is anyone there?"
Seeing no one, Katherine felt uneasy. She was sure she heard something!
Looking down, her eyes widened. A small child was hanging from the balcony railing of the next room, about to fall!
Even though it was only the second floor, a fall could still be dangerous for such a small child!
"Don't move! It's dangerous!"
Without thinking, Katherine rushed to the balcony, climbed over, and rescued the child, bringing him back inside.
It was the little boy Scarlett had guilt-tripped Alex into adopting. His head was still wrapped in thick bandages from a recent injury.
Katherine put the child down, squatted in front of him, and asked sternly, "How did you get to the balcony alone? Where's your caretaker?"
Charles, still shaken, backed away and looked at her warily. "Bad... bad person..."
Having just saved him and being called a bad person, Katherine felt a bit annoyed. "Who told you I was a bad person?"
Charles weakly replied, "Mom."
Katherine let out a sarcastic laugh. "And is your mom a good person?"
Charles fell silent, thinking of Scarlett, and shook his head in fear.
Katherine paused, realizing that Charles already knew Scarlett's true nature and had likely suffered a lot because of it.
"Why did you go outside alone? It's very dangerous, you know? You can't do that again. If I hadn't seen you, you would have fallen!"
Charles, not yet able to speak in full sentences, could only say keywords, "Scared... ran... accidentally fell..."
Katherine frowned. "Scared? What are you scared of?"
Charles, eyes red with unease, looked around to see if anyone scary was nearby, then answered with a sob, "Scared of mom... very scared."
Katherine knew that to Scarlett, this child was just a pawn. Now that she couldn't use him to manipulate Alex, Scarlett certainly wouldn't treat him well.
"What happened? Did she hit you?"
"Burned..." Charles pointed to his mouth, "Eating... hot... scolded."
Katherine looked at his swollen mouth, which seemed to have been burned recently.
A child's skin was the most delicate. Seeing him hurt like this was heartbreaking.
Now, as an expectant mother, seeing a child treated this way made her very uncomfortable, even angry.
"Come on, let's go find your uncle and tell him who did this to you!" Katherine picked up Charles, intending to take him to Bernard.
Although she didn't like Bernard, he was still a decent person, unlike the sinister Scarlett.
As the most authoritative figure in the Mitchell family, Bernard could control Scarlett and stand up for Charles.
However, Charles reacted strongly. Hearing that he was going outside, he started crying and struggling. "No! No, don't go out... no..."
