Chapter 647 Make Way
"Why?" A voice piped up from behind.
Everyone spun around, and there was Alex, striding over.
Hilton quickly plastered on a smile. "Alex, chill. We were just messing with Katherine."
Issac shot Hilton a look. "He said he doesn't wanna be Mrs. Melville."
Alex's brow furrowed, and he shot Hilton a look of pure disdain.
Hilton forced a grin, glared at Issac, and then got up from the couch to make room for Alex.
But instead of sitting next to Katherine, Alex took a few steps and plopped down on a single chair, which made the whole vibe go icy.
Hilton and Issac exchanged a glance.
Right then, Jonathan stood up with a smile, sat next to Katherine, and took the cold drink she was holding. "Don't drink cold stuff. I'll get you some warm milk."
Katherine nodded. "Thanks."
She didn't even glance at Alex, not wanting to ruin her mood. She was here to find Lotus's self-portrait, not to joke around with these guys. She was getting pretty annoyed.
Hilton handed Alex a glass of wine. "What's the deal? You found her, but things are still off?"
Alex took the wine, clinked glasses with Hilton, took a sip, and stayed silent.
Katherine felt a cold stare at her, making her super uncomfortable. She couldn't sit still and asked Jonathan, "Where's the restroom?"
Jonathan smiled and pointed. "Over there. Need me to show you?"
"Thanks, but I'm good." Katherine got up and walked slowly towards the restroom. She didn't really need to go; she just needed an excuse to bail.
Now, she could sneak around and find Lotus's self-portrait.
Jonathan watched her leave, looking uneasy. After a few seconds, he got up to follow, but Alex's voice stopped him. "Jonathan."
Jonathan turned back with a smile. "Alex, what's up? Need something?"
Alex squinted at him for a long moment. "Nothing."
Jonathan felt a bit ticked off but said nothing. When he looked back, Katherine was gone, and there were just a bunch of guests milling around. He sighed and sat back down.
Alex, looking all serious and lost in thought, downed his wine and stood up.
Hilton asked, "Alex, you just got here. Where are you headed?"
Alex replied coolly, "Gotta make a call."
Hilton didn't push and turned to Issac. "What's up with Alex and Katherine? She's pretty far along."
Issac shot him a look. "Mind your own business, man!"
Hilton snorted and turned to Jonathan, who was sipping his drink solo. "You seemed pretty worried about Katherine earlier. Are you two tight or something? I didn't know you guys were connected."
Jonathan grinned. "Didn't I mention? I knew Katherine way before I knew she was mixed up with Alex."
Hilton paused, sensing some subtext, and exchanged another glance with Issac.
Jonathan finished his drink and set the empty glass down. "I'm gonna step out and make a call too."
Watching Jonathan walk away, Hilton shook his head. "I think neither of them is making a call. What do you think?"
Issac swirled his half-full glass. "Probably."
Hilton chuckled, "They're both probably hunting for Katherine."
Issac stayed quiet.
Katherine didn't head to the restroom but wandered along the walls of the banquet hall, checking out the paintings. There were a lot of famous ones, just like the rumors said, but no sign of Lotus's self-portrait.
She thought, 'Is it not here? Do they think Lotus's painting isn't famous enough to be displayed? Did I come here for nothing?'
Feeling frustrated, Katherine heard a voice that made her even more annoyed.
"Katherine, why are you here alone? Why are you not hanging with Hilton and the others?" Sophia walked over with a smile.
Katherine replied, "Just looking for the restroom."
Sophia's eyes narrowed. "The restroom isn't this way. Katherine, are you looking for something? You've been scanning the place since you got here. What are you after? Tell me, I'll help you find it!"
Katherine shook her head and said indifferently, "Nothing. Just bored, looking around."
Sophia stared at her. "I see! The hotel owner brought out his prized paintings for my birthday party today. They're all originals. Katherine, you should take a good look. Bet you haven't seen these famous pieces before, right?"
Katherine didn't want to argue. "Yeah, it's a rare chance. I should soak it all in, thanks to you, Sophia!"
Sophia smiled. "Katherine, don't say that. I know your childhood was rough, but it's not your fault. If we become friends, I can take you to places like this to broaden your horizons."
Katherine smiled. "Thanks in advance. Can I keep looking now?"
Sophia nodded. "Of course."
Katherine said, "Then why are you still standing in front of me? I'm eager to see these rare masterpieces."
Sophia's face stiffened for a moment, but she quickly smiled again. "Oh, sorry. I'll move. Then, Katherine, can you also make way for me?"
