Chapter 936 Paying the Price
Nora responded with a smile, though there was an inevitable hint of bitterness in it.
Katherine didn't say anything more. She turned around, took Alex's hand, and after saying goodbye to Claire, they left the ward.
Outside the ward, Katherine stopped. She was still a bit uneasy.
Alex understood her feelings, "If you don't want to leave, we can stay outside. If anything happens inside, we can go in and check on your mother immediately."
Katherine nodded. She didn't think Nora was a fool, but she was still a bit worried.
After they left, Nora walked to Claire's bedside as usual, "Claire, did you get enough to eat for dinner? Do you want me to go to the nurse's station to heat up some food for you?"
Claire shook her head, looking concernedly at her old friend. Even though Nora was acting as usual, Claire could tell that she was in a bad mood.
"I'm not hungry. Nora, did you have a fight with Brent?"
Nora smiled, "No. You need to focus on your recovery, don't overthink!"
Claire reached out and held Nora's hand, "Don't try to hide it from me! I can tell you've been crying. What happened? Is it because of your stepdaughter? Did you and Brent have another fight?"
Nora couldn't hold back her tears, her eyes reddening as she wiped them away. "No, really! We did have a few words, but he already knows he was wrong!"
Claire was stunned, confused and worried, "Then why are you crying?"
Nora didn't want to say, afraid that Claire would feel burdened.
Linda, with a pout and a crying tone, said, "Ms. Ayers, my dad was taken away!"
What? Claire found it hard to believe. With Brent's high status, who could take him away?
Worried that Linda's expression might be misunderstood, Claire looked at Nora again.
"Nora, tell me! What exactly happened? Who took Brent away?"
Nora sighed. At this point, she couldn't hide it anymore. She wiped her tears and, in as calm a manner as possible, told Claire, "His company had some issues, apparently very serious tax problems, and he was taken away for investigation! Claire, don't worry about him, the outcome is still uncertain! Even if there is a result, it's his own mistake, let him bear the consequences himself!"
Claire gasped, feeling heartbroken for Nora, but didn't know what to say, "Nora, does this have anything to do with Katherine and Alex?"
Nora quickly shook her head, "It's not because of them! Claire, don't overthink, I know Brent the best, he must be aware of what he did, that's why he followed the police for investigation so obediently."
Although Claire didn't say it out loud, she understood. She couldn't vouch for Brent's character, but she knew that with his power, he could easily cover up any issues within the company without anyone noticing. The sudden discovery of these problems must mean that someone with a status equal to or higher than his wanted to bring him down.
And she knew, it should be Katherine and Alex.
Claire looked at Nora with helplessness and guilt, "Nora, I'm sorry, I think I know what happened, but I can't seem to help you... I..."
Nora patted Claire's hand, "Don't say that. I understand how you feel, and I get it. If I were in your shoes, I'd feel the same way."
Claire's eyes reddened with guilt. Over the years, while she was struggling and homeless, it was thanks to Nora's constant help that she managed to get by. But now that Nora's family was in trouble, she felt helpless...
She cared deeply for Nora, but she also had to think about her own daughter.
Laura was given to the wrong person to raise due to her wrong choice back then, and she suffered a lot.
Finally, she grew up and met her beloved Alex, but they were constantly troubled, separated for three years.
She didn't fulfill her responsibilities as a mother to Laura. She felt she had no right to ask Laura for a favor: could she go easy on Brent?
Because the person who caused her and her beloved Alex to be separated was Brent's biological daughter, Sophia!
The relationship was too complicated, she couldn't interfere and felt very troubled.
"Nora, I don't know what to do, you've helped me so much, but I can't do anything for you! Don't blame Laura, she..."
Seeing her so self-blaming, Nora felt very uncomfortable too. She hugged Claire, patting her back, "Claire, don't you know what kind of person I am? I understand you, and I understand Katherine and Alex. Besides, Katherine once saved my life. Without her, I wouldn't be here today. How could I blame her?
I know everything that happened in the past three years, I know what Sophia did, and now their punishment has come; no one can save them! Everyone has to face the consequences of their actions, right? Sophia has to pay for her mistakes, and so does Brent!
Moreover, the problems in Brent's company were not fabricated by others, they were just discovered and reported. It was his own mistake!
Claire, don't worry, I'm fine! I knew from the beginning that the man I loved wasn't perfect. Brent made mistakes, I'll wait for him to correct them! If he's arrested or imprisoned, it doesn't matter, I'll wait for him to come back. I have plenty of time!"
Hearing Nora say this to make her feel less burdened, Claire felt even more heavy-hearted and sad, "But if he's really sentenced, he might not come back for many years. You're still young..."
Nora straightened up and showed Claire a resilient and determined smile, "I can wait as long as it takes. You know how lovestruck I am! Back then, you told me not to marry Brent, a man with such complicated social relations, but I didn't listen to you at all and plunged into marriage with Brent. Do you think I can listen to your advice now? Alright, don't worry about me! I'm the kind of lovestruck person who just needs love. Even if I wait alone, I feel it's sweet!"
Claire was amused by Nora's words, "Nora."
Nora's smile deepened, "I'm serious! Honestly, now that he realizes his mistakes, I'm very happy! He deserves to pay for indulging Sophia all these years. This is his well-deserved punishment!"
