Chapter 609 Reasons
Katherine took a sip of water. "You can't sleep 'cause you're too nosy, and now you want me to take the blame for that?"
Sophia shrugged and threw her hands up. "Alright. Since you are all secretive about the past, I won't ask. Let's just eat. Moon, have some more."
Katherin's phone buzzed. She glanced down; it was another message from Jonathan. [I'm here.]
Putting down her water, Katherine grabbed her stuff and stood up. "I'm done. My friend's here to pick me up, so enjoy your meals. "
Alex's face stayed blank as he asked, "Moon, can I get your contact info?"
Katherine said, "You have my email. If you need anything, just email me. Other ways are a hassle."
With that, Katherine turned and left.
Sophia watched her walk away and said, "Alex, do you think that Moon might be..."
Before Sophia could finish, Alex got up and followed Katherine out.
Katherine walked out of the restaurant and hopped into a white car. The car slowly drove away, its reflection captured in Alex's deep, unreadable eyes as he looked through the restaurant's glass door.
Inside the car, Katherine gripped the seatbelt tightly and let out a long breath.
The car wasn't moving fast, but Katherine's action worried Jonathan. "What's up? You feeling okay?"
Katherine shook her head. "I'm good."
Jonathan reached over and patted her shoulder reassuringly. "It's cool, don't stress. I'm here."
Katherine glanced at Jonathan weakly and asked, "Didn't you say you were sending someone to pick me up? Why'd you come yourself?"
Jonathan smiled wryly. "You said you were having dinner with Alex. How could I chill? So I came to get you myself."
Katherine said, "No need to worry. I played my part well; he didn't suspect a thing."
Katherine was still wearing that realistic mask, and even up close, it was flawless. Jonathan wasn't worried Alex would figure it out. What he was worried about was if she might catch feelings for Alex again.
"After not seeing him for six months, how'd it feel to have dinner with Alex today?" Jonathan asked, testing the waters.
"Nothing special," Katherine lazily leaned back in her seat and replied.
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. "Really? You don't look like you felt nothing!"
Katherine said, "All I can say is that it is pretty gross."
Jonathan laughed. "That's good. I was afraid you'd dump me after seeing him."
Katherine rolled her eyes and said, "When have I ever been with you? Don't kid yourself."
Jonathan shrugged. "Alright. Just wishful thinking again. Since we're out, where do you wanna go? I'll take you for a spin."
Katherine waved her hand. "Nah, I don't wanna go anywhere. Just take me back. I'm tired and wanna sleep."
"Okay, that's cool." Jonathan said, "You can take off the mask in the car. It must be stuffy wearing it."
Katherine closed her eyes, too lazy to move. "I'll take it off when we get back."
Seeing she was really beat, Jonathan didn't push it and sped up towards the villa.
Two hours later, they pulled up to the place.
Katherine had slept the whole way but it was a restless sleep. She had a stressful dream where Alex wouldn't let her leave and kept trying to take the baby from her.
In the end, it was Jonathan who woke her up.
She opened her eyes to find Jonathan's face way too close and instinctively pushed him away. "What are you doing?"
Jonathan smiled wryly. "We're home. I called you a bunch of times, but you didn't wake up, so I got closer to call you again."
Katherine sat up a bit and looked out the car window, realizing they had arrived.
They had arrived at the place she had been living for the past six months, but it never felt like home. Just a temporary spot.
"Thanks for bringing me back. I'll head in now. You should get going while it's still early," Katherine said, polite but distant.
Jonathan frowned. "Katherine, I drove all the way here and I'm beat. Aren't you gonna let me in to rest a bit before I head back?"
Katherine didn't really want to, but considering the long drive, she agreed. "Alright, come in and rest for a bit. I just don't want you driving back when it's dark; it's not safe."
Jonathan smiled. "Not bad. You actually care about my safety!"
Katherine ignored him and got out of the car.
Back at the villa, she downed a large glass of water to calm herself.
Even though the meeting with Alex was over, the stress from the dream about fighting Alex for the baby lingered. It was just a dream, but it left her mind in a mess.
Jonathan looked at her with some concern and asked, "Just one meeting, and it messes you up this much?"
Katherine glanced at Jonathan. "It's not because of meeting him. I had a nightmare in the car."
Jonathan looked at her deeply. "What kind of nightmare? Tell me, and I'll help you bear it."
Katherine shook her head. "Nothing."
Jonathan said, "Alright, take off your mask now. We're back, and there's no one to see you. It looks weird to me."
Katherine had almost forgotten she was still wearing the mask. She took it off.
The mask was soft and felt a lot like real skin. Her own skin was already covered in a thin layer of sweat.
Jonathan handed her a couple of tissues and said, "Now that today's business is over, you shouldn't need to see Alex again. Once the baby is born, I'll find a way to get you a new identity and send you and the baby abroad without Alex finding out."
Katherine looked at him and said gratefully, "Alright, if you ever need my help in the future, I'll be there for you."
Jonathan said with a hint of deeper meaning, "No need to thank me so much; I have my own reasons."
Katherine was slightly stunned and a bit puzzled. "What reasons?"
