Chapter 704 Beating Him with a Hundred Sticks
Alex strolled up to Brent, radiating confidence. He kept his cool but stayed polite and humble as he said, "Mr. Coleman, I'm Alex. Sophia and I are just friends, so your earlier address was off. Just call me Alex."
Brent smirked. "How is it off? You and Sophia are already married. If you're not my son-in-law, who is?"
Alex replied, "Sophia and I got married just to get Jackie into surgery. It's all in the contract. The marriage is just for that, nothing more. Once it's done, we'll get divorced."
Alex nodded at Leander, who stepped up and handed the contract to Brent.
Brent glanced at it with a murderous look but didn't take it.
Alex said, "If you have any issues with this contract, let me know. As long as it's reasonable and I can do it, I'll make it up to Sophia."
Leander pushed the contract closer. "Mr. Coleman, please take a look."
Brent didn't even glance at it before swatting it away with a cold laugh. "Do you think Sophia needs your compensation?"
Alex, unfazed, asked, "Then what do you want, Mr. Coleman?"
Brent flexed his wrist menacingly. "My daughter lacks nothing. What can you possibly offer her?"
"Sophia is my beloved daughter. You tricked her into this marriage, and now you want to ditch her. Do you think she's some kind of object?"
"Let me tell you, you must take responsibility for Sophia!" Brent added.
Alex stayed calm. "I never deceived Sophia. She knew exactly why we got married and volunteered to help."
"I'm very grateful for Sophia's help and willing to compensate her, but I can't take responsibility for her," Alex continued. "I have a wife and an unborn child. They need me."
Brent's eyes widened with sarcasm. "You want to take responsibility for Katherine, but my daughter Sophia, a young and beautiful woman, has to become a divorcee because of you!"
"Even if Sophia meets another man she likes in the future and wants to get married, she'll be seen as a second marriage!" Brent added.
"You've caused Sophia such great emotional and reputational damage. Do you think I'll let you be with Katherine?"
Seeing the murderous intent in Brent's eyes when he mentioned Katherine, Alex was displeased and said, "I made sure there was a way to annul the marriage if needed. We can annul it."
"Annulment is different from divorce. After the annulment, there will be no trace of it in Sophia's records, and nothing substantial ever happened between us. Everything stays clean," Alex continued, "Even so, I'm still willing to compensate her to thank her for her help."
Brent sneered, "You make it sound so easy!"
"Sure, you won't lose your dignity, but if you ditch Sophia, her future husband might hate her for hiding her marital history! Do you know how much this can mess up a girl's life? And you talk about it like it's no big deal!"
As Brent's anger grew, he signaled his men, who handed him a professional baseball bat before stepping back.
Brent gripped the bat, playing with it meaningfully. "As a father, I won't let anyone mess with my daughter like this! You say you want to compensate Sophia? Fine! I'll give you two choices!"
"One, forget Katherine and have a grand wedding with Sophia, taking responsibility for her for life!"
"Two, take a hundred hits from me. If you can still walk out of here alive, I'll agree to annul the marriage with Sophia!"
"Choose!"
Alex glanced at the baseball bat in Brent's hand, his frown deepening, but his expression stayed calm.
Seeing Alex's silence, Brent laughed mockingly. "What? Afraid to choose? Alex, turns out you're a coward! Unwilling to take responsibility for Sophia and too scared to take a hundred hits for Katherine?"
Brent questioned, "Is this what you call taking responsibility for your wife and child? If you're a coward, I think you should choose to marry Sophia. I can pretend nothing happened and accept you as my son-in-law!"
He added, "Oh, and by the way, I've had Katherine thoroughly investigated. You can hide her in the Mitchell mansion for now, but you can't keep her there forever. We've got plenty of time, and my guys will get their chance!"
"At least, she has to go to the hospital to give birth, right? I'll blow up the hospital if I have to, but I won't let you two be together."
Worried about Katherine's safety, Alex frowned noticeably.
He could keep an eye on Katherine for a while, but he couldn't promise to be with her every single moment going forward. There would always be times when things slipped through the cracks.
Having someone watch her all day would make her unhappy over time.
Katherine loved freedom and would find ways to get rid of anyone watching her if she got annoyed.
And Summit Innovations Group was not a legitimate business. Brent was no gentleman, and they used all sorts of dirty tricks in their dealings.
Blowing up a hospital was something Brent could actually do. He could find a few scapegoats to take the fall, and Brent would still walk free.
Alex hesitated not out of fear of the hundred hits, but rather was concerned that he couldn't return in time to be with Katherine in the delivery room in three days.
But compared to her future safety, there were more important things to consider.
With this in mind, Alex remained composed as he slowly took off his suit jacket. "Fine, I'll take the hundred hits today. But you must keep your word and let Sophia and me annul the marriage afterward, and never trouble my wife and child again."
Brent was stunned, not expecting Alex to choose to take the beating rather than take responsibility for Sophia.
