Chapter 610 He Was Here
Jonathan reached out and flicked her forehead. "If I get you and the kid outta here, I still got a shot with you. But if Alex finds you two, I'm toast. Katherine, are you playing dumb, or are you really that clueless?"
Katherine rubbed her forehead and said, "Then just give up. I know you've helped me a ton these past six months, and I can repay you in any way except love."
Jonathan sighed, looking all pitiful. "Why so uptight? I'm not gonna force you."
Katherine felt a bit awkward and glared at him. "Have you rested enough? If you have, then scram. It's not safe to drive at night in the burbs. Better to leave early."
Jonathan's handsome face moved closer to hers as he said, "You know it's not safe to drive at night, and you still won't let me crash here?"
Katherine had no intention of letting him stay. "It's not appropriate. Don't you have work at the company tomorrow morning? Better if you go back."
Jonathan had come out on short notice, and all the company meetings had been pushed to tomorrow. There was a ton of work waiting for him. But he was really reluctant to leave.
He took a step forward, gently bending down a bit. "Then I'll come see you again in a few days. Katherine, if possible, let me be your husband, so I can rightfully take care of you and the kid. Think about it seriously."
As he spoke, he unexpectedly planted a light kiss on her forehead.
Katherine was stunned. By the time she snapped out of it, she only saw Jonathan's back as he walked out the door. Then, she heard the sound of a car engine starting. Jonathan had left.
Katherine felt a bit dazed, the farewell kiss on her forehead still warm.
In the past six months, Jonathan had done a lot for her, and her feelings for him were hard to describe.
'Did he just say he wanted to be my husband?' As she was lost in thought, her phone suddenly rang, interrupting her train of thought.
It wasn't her phone ringing. Looking around, she saw Jonathan's phone left on the sofa. Meanwhile, the sound of the car engine returned, and soon, there was a knock on the door.
Jonathan had forgotten his phone. Katherine picked up the phone from the sofa and walked to the door.
Seeing the servant who was about to open the door, Katherine said, "He forgot his phone. I'll open the door for him."
The servant nodded and went back to her tasks.
She didn't answer the still-ringing phone and directly opened the door, thinking Jonathan could answer it himself.
However, as soon as the door opened, Alex appeared unexpectedly in front of her, and Katherine's eyes widened as she thought, 'How did Alex find this place? The worst part is, I am not wearing my mask. It's over!'
Alex's extremely handsome face showed no expression as he looked down at her, his eyes indifferent.
Katherine thought Alex would surely grab her in anger and question her about why she ran away. However, he didn't.
He didn't say a word, just stared at her coldly, then glanced around the villa's hall behind her, a hint of sarcasm in his eyes.
The vibe was tense, and Katherine couldn't help but break the silence, "Mr. Melville, what are you doing here?"
Alex's gaze fell on her face again, seemingly growing colder. He let out a lukewarm laugh. Then, he elegantly took two steps back before turned around, got into his car and drove away.
Katherine stood dumbfounded at the door, watching the car quickly drive off, and instinctively pinched herself.
She doubted whether what had just happened was real. But the pain told her she wasn't dreaming, nor was she hallucinating.
'Everything is real; Alex really came! But he didn't say anything and just left. This isn't like Alex's temper. He finds me, so why doesn't he get angry? He didn't take me away, just looked at me and left. This is too hard to understand!' Lost in thought, Katherine snapped back to reality because Jonathan's phone rang again. In a daze, she answered the call.
Jonathan's gentle voice came through; he was calling his phone from his car. "Katherine, I forgot my phone. Keep it for me, and I'll send someone to pick it up tomorrow."
"Got it," Katherine responded emotionlessly and hung up the phone.
Her mind was a mess, more chaotic than ever. 'What did Alex mean just now? I should be relieved that Alex didn't get angry and didn't take me away. But why does my chest feel so heavy?'
The servants didn't know what had happened, only noticing the mountain wind blowing in through the open door.
Seeing Katherine standing at the door with her hair blown messy, a servant quickly ran over and closed the door. "Ms. Galatea, it's windy outside. Why are you standing here? You'll catch a cold. Go rest. We'll call you when dinner is ready."
Nodding woodenly, Katherine turned and went back to her room. She was clearly exhausted, but she tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
Her mind was full of the image of Alex standing at the door looking at her. He seemed to have smiled, but that smile carried no warmth, only sarcasm.
Feeling extremely frustrated, Katherine picked up her phone and called Ambrosia.
This was the first time in six months she had called Ambrosia. Usually, they communicated via Morse code text messages to avoid being discovered by Alex.
Now that Alex knew her location, there was no need to be so cautious.
The phone rang for a long time before Ambrosia answered, "Hello? Katherine?"
Ambrosia's voice sounded a bit off.
Katherine asked with concern, "What's wrong with your voice?"
Ambrosia's voice sounded even stranger. "N-nothing! Katherine, do you need something?"
Katherine asked cautiously, "Where are you? Why does your voice sound like that? Is someone causing you trouble?"
Katherine instinctively suspected that Alex had sent someone to deal with Ambrosia and Frank because his behavior earlier was very unusual. She thought he must have taken action elsewhere.
Given Alex's style, it was impossible for him to have no reaction.
Ambrosia said, "Katherine..."
