Chapter 709 It's Definitely Not Me

Alex shot Sophia a cold, sharp look, clearly ticked off.

Sophia had never seen him look at her like that before. Even though he was in a wheelchair, looking all worn out and harmless, it still gave her the creeps.

Alex said seriously, "Look, her growing up in the countryside is a plus, not a reason to think she's not good enough for me. I know better than anyone how amazing she is. I'm lucky she even considers me, and I don't need her to match my status. Where she comes from, her background—none of that matters. What matters is that I love her."

Hearing Alex say this with such conviction, Sophia's face twisted with pain and frustration. She bit her lip, trying to keep her emotions in check. "Alex, how can you not see..."

Alex's eyes flashed with impatience as he cut her off. "I get it now why you offered to help me back then! You said it was out of friendship, but you had other motives from the start. You never planned to annul the marriage. Now, even the little gratitude I had for you is gone. Don't make me sick."

The word 'sick' hit Sophia hard. She had secretly loved Alex for nearly ten years, and now he was telling her he had lost all respect for her.

The love she had finally expressed was met with Alex's repulsion and aversion. How could she not be heartbroken?

After a long moment of silence, Sophia forced a bitter smile. "Alex, I'm sorry to disappoint you. Just pretend I didn't say anything."

Alex turned his face away, his expression indifferent, and said nothing.

Sophia let out another bitter laugh and then pleaded, "Alex, I'm a bit hungry. Before we handle the paperwork, can we have breakfast together?"

Alex replied coldly, "That's not necessary. The annulment process won't take long. You can have breakfast afterward."

Sophia's face fell, her hurt expression showing genuine pain. "Alex, you won't even have breakfast with me?"

Alex responded firmly, "No need."

Sophia's emotions flared up again. "Alex, you say you love Katherine, so you should know how painful it is to love someone who doesn't love you back, right? I love you just like you love Katherine! After the paperwork is done and our marriage is annulled, I won't come back to see you again, and you and Katherine won't come to Markovia, right? We almost won't see each other again! Even if you don't have feelings for me and only see me as a friend, you could at least show a little kindness. I'm not asking for much, just for you to have a meal with me. You can't be that stingy, can you?"

Alex furrowed his brows, thought for a moment, and then said indifferently, "If you must have this meal, then we'll eat after the paperwork is done."

Sophia smiled self-deprecatingly. "Alex, after knowing you for so many years, I didn't realize you despised me this much! Fine, we'll eat after the paperwork is done. At least we'll part on good terms."

The only response she got was Alex's cold silence.

During the annulment process, Sophia hesitated for a long time before slowly pulling out her documents.

The lawyer Alex brought along stepped forward to talk to the staff, explaining the situation, and everything went smoothly.

Finally, the staff took and destroyed their documents, officially ending their flimsy relationship.

Leander pushed Alex out of the Markovia Marriage Bureau, and they got ready to hop into the car sent by the Melville family to take them straight to the airport for their flight back home.

Sophia hurried after them. "Alex, why are you leaving? Didn't we agree to have a meal together?"

Alex hadn't taken the meal seriously. He was itching to get back home to tell Katherine everything was sorted, to be with her and make sure she safely gave birth to their child.

But seeing Sophia's earnest expression, Alex felt a bit annoyed but didn't want to break his promise.

After this, they wouldn't see each other again, and having a meal could be seen as a final closure, preventing Brent from causing trouble back home.

So, Alex turned to his subordinate and asked, "Leander, when does the plane take off?"

Leander checked his watch. "Mr. Melville, it's 8 AM now. Our flight leaves in three hours. If you want to have breakfast, we won't miss the flight."

Confirming they had enough time, Alex nodded slightly and then looked at Sophia. "Let's find a place nearby to eat."

Alex agreed to the meal, giving Sophia a response, but she felt no comfort in her heart.

She was taken aback when she learned that Alex had already bought a return ticket, planning to fly back immediately after the meal. In fact, he hadn't even intended to stay for the meal; he just wanted to fly back home.

Was he really that eager to return to Katherine?

Since Alex wanted to eat nearby, Sophia didn't want to be picky and chose a restaurant close to the Markovia Marriage Bureau.

After they sat down, Sophia warmly asked him, as she usually did, what he wanted to eat.

Alex replied indifferently, "Anything."

Alex's face was expressionless, clearly showing he had no interest in the meal.

Sophia had no choice but to order the same meal for Alex as she did for herself.

Then, she looked at Alex with concern and said, "Alex, my father promised to take responsibility for your injuries and ensure you get the best medical treatment in Markovia. You don't have to rush back home. I'm worried you won't handle the flight well with such severe injuries."

Every part of Alex's body was in pain, but he showed no sign of suffering.

"These injuries are mine to bear. From now on, we owe each other nothing, and my injuries are none of Brent's concern," Alex said firmly.

Sophia looked heartbroken. "Alex."

Alex seemed to have guessed her lingering thoughts and interrupted, reminding her, "Sophia, believe me, you will find a man who cherishes you, but that man will never be me."
