Chapter 42 My Husband Stood in for My Parents
Long time no see, so Roger greeted Katherine before saying, "Katherine, next Monday is the graduation ceremony for your class. As an outstanding graduate of the school, we hope that both you and your parents can come on stage to give a speech and share your journey to success."
Katherine politely declined, "I'm sorry, Mr. Moore, I don't have parents."
"Why don't you have parents? Are you lying? Your file clearly states that your father and stepmother are alive."
"Mr. Moore, I..."
Someone seemed to be calling Roger on the other end of the phone, so he quickly responded. Then he hurriedly added, "Katherine, remember to bring your parents and arrive early on Monday. Don't be late!"
After saying that, Roger hung up the phone.
Katherine felt a bit frustrated and thought to herself, 'I do have parents, but it's as good as not having them.'
Since Katherine was a child, Joshua had always neglected her. As a father, he had never attended any of Katherine's parent-teacher meetings, and her stepmother, Lillian, wouldn't either.
But Roger always considered Katherine his favorite student, and Katherine didn't want to disappoint him.
After some thought, Katherine decided to call Joshua. "Dad, do you have time next Monday?"
On the other end of the phone, Joshua was happily having breakfast with Lillian and Sherry. "Next Monday? It's Sherry's live-streaming ceremony for signing with a new company, so Lillian and I need to dress up and attend to show our support."
Katherine raised an eyebrow, finding it suspicious. "Sherry is signing with a new company? It seems that her career hasn't been affected by the negative news last time."
Joshua laughed, "That's right! The last trending topic was actually a misunderstanding. The woman in the video wasn't Sherry at all; she was an unknown internet celebrity who had plastic surgery to look like Sherry. So, Sherry was maliciously framed. Luckily, Lillian found a way to uncover the truth and release a clarification, so Sherry is innocent. And because of the attention from this news, a big talent agency specifically came to sign Sherry!"
Katherine smiled, thinking, 'Well, Lillian is amazing! She really managed to cover up Sherry's wrongdoing.'
Joshua asked, "Katherine, what's the matter with your question about Monday?"
Thinking of Roger's request, Katherine hesitated and said, "Monday is my graduation ceremony, and the school requires me to attend with my parents, so I wanted to ask if you could..."
Before Katherine could finish, Joshua interrupted, "Katherine, I have always been confident in your academic performance, so I don't need to attend. Sherry's signing ceremony is more important. After all, it is related to Sherry's future career development."
This answer was within Katherine's expectations, and she sarcastically smiled. "Alright, I understand. Goodbye, Dad."
As soon as she hung up, Sherry sent several messages in a row: [What's wrong? Do you want Dad to accompany you to the graduation ceremony?]
Then, Sherry sent photos flaunting her latest designer handbags.
Katherine smiled faintly and replied: [Wishing you success!]
Not seeing any jealous reaction from Katherine, Sherry felt like she had wasted sending the photos. So she replied: [Katherine, no matter how hard you try, you will always be an embarrassing illegitimate child. Don't dream of surpassing me; you're not worthy!]
Katherine didn't pay any attention to Sherry's shallow boasting and arrogance. What she was more concerned about was how she would explain to Roger if her parents didn't accompany her on Monday.
At that moment, Alexander pushed the door open and walked in. He opened the closet and took out a suit jacket.
"Come here."
Upon hearing the commanding tone of the man, Katherine frowned. "What is it?"
Alexander said, "Tie my tie for me!"
Katherine was speechless.
If it weren't for Katherine's promise to play the role of Alexander's wife, she wouldn't have cooperated and served him.
She got up and walked over, picking up an exquisite tie and putting it around Alexander's neck.
Alexander was too tall for Katherine, so she had to tiptoe to barely reach his neck. Due to the height difference, Katherine's movements were a bit clumsy and awkward.
Alexander teasingly stared at Katherine and smiled.
After much effort, Katherine finally managed to tie Alexander's tie. She looked up and glared at him. Suddenly, she thought of something and asked, "Sir, do you have time next Monday?"
"No," Alexander replied quickly and indifferently.
Katherine pursed her lips, not saying anything more. However, she intentionally messed up his tie and left.
Alexander frowned and straightened his tie. "What's wrong? Do you have something on Monday?"
Katherine turned to look at Alexander. She thought, 'Even if Sir has time, what identity can he have to accompany her to the graduation ceremony? And Sir's status is too prominent; it will surely attract unnecessary attention.'
"It's nothing, just a casual question!" she gave up.
Alexander didn't press further. He walked up to Katherine, lifted her chin with his hand, and arrogantly asked, "Baby, is your stomach still hurting?"
Katherine glared at him in anger. "Thank you for your concern, but I'm feeling much better now!"
"Alright, don't die in my house," Alexander said indifferently. He released her chin, draped his suit jacket over his arm, and turned to leave.
Katherine clenched her fist and waved it at Alexander's tall figure, thinking, 'He's really annoying!'
Later, Katherine thought of Sandra. If she had asked Sandra, she would probably have agreed to accompany her to the graduation ceremony.
But Sandra was older, and the graduation ceremony would be long, so it didn't seem right to ask her.
She thought, 'Forget it, I'll just go alone when the time comes!'
On Monday, in the auditorium of Janetrick University, Roger was standing on the stage giving the opening speech.
In today's graduation ceremony, each department has selected an outstanding student to attend with their parents.
Every parent was proud of their own child.
But Katherine stood there alone, looking different.
At the guidance office upstairs in the auditorium, the head of guidance, Owen Wilson, said with concern, "Mr. Melville, this is Fiona's seventh time failing since she enrolled. If she continues like this, it will be difficult for Fiona to graduate!"
Fiona was scolded by her teachers for not studying hard.
Alexander sat on the sofa in the office, supporting his forehead with one hand. He no longer wanted to deal with his useless sister.
He lowered his head and glanced downstairs, seeing Katherine standing alone on the stage.
"What are those people doing down there?"
Owen walked over and looked downstairs. "Mr. Melville, that's the graduation ceremony! The people on the stage are the outstanding students selected by each department. They are attending the graduation ceremony today with their parents and giving speeches."
As he spoke, Owen also noticed Katherine standing alone on the stage. "What? Why is Katherine standing alone in the middle? She was the top student when she enrolled, and she was Roger's most valued outstanding student. But why aren't her parents here?"
Alexander squinted, thinking, 'A few days ago, Katherine seemed to have asked me if I had time on Monday. Was it for her graduation ceremony?'
Owen sighed again, "She is an outstanding person, but her parents don't seem to love her!"
Alexander raised an eyebrow and sneered. "Mr. Wilson, do you think her husband can go?"
Owen was taken aback. "Mr. Melville, what are you talking about?"
