Chapter 376 Give Bernard a Chance to Make Amends
Bernard felt a headache coming on when he saw his troublesome sister. He pinched the bridge of his nose and said, "Whatever you're doing at the Melville family today, go home now!"
Scarlett noticed Bernard's serious tone and nodded as she walked forward. "Bernard, I know I shouldn't have left Charles alone. I'll go back now to be with him. Let's go!"
But Bernard didn't move. "Billy's outside. He'll take you home."
Scarlett was puzzled. "Bernard, aren't you coming with me?"
Bernard replied heavily, "I have something to do. You go home first."
Wait, so Bernard didn't come to pick her up? Scarlett was shocked and glanced at where Bernard was sitting, directly across from Katherine.
Did Bernard come to see Katherine?
The more she thought about it, the less it made sense. Scarlett said, "Bernard, it's okay. I can wait for you. We can go home together after you're done."
Bernard's eyes showed impatience. "You don't need to wait. Go home. I'll be going to the office later and won't be coming home."
Scarlett had no reason to stay and listen to what Bernard had to discuss with Katherine, so she said, "Oh, okay, I'll go then."
Before leaving, Scarlett gave Fiona a meaningful look.
Fiona was initially confused but then seemed to understand and excitedly said, "Scarlett, I'll go with you!"
Scarlett was speechless.
Fiona was clueless. Why would she go with her? The look was to tell her to stay and listen to Bernard and Katherine, not to follow her! Idiot!
Fiona, unaware she misunderstood, linked arms with Scarlett and whispered, "Scarlett, what's up with Bernard today? Didn't he come to pick you up?"
Scarlett rolled her eyes and forced a dry laugh. "I don't know. Maybe he has something important to discuss with Katherine."
Fiona thought for a moment and then had a sudden realization. "Oh! I get it! Bernard must be pressuring Katherine to leave Alex and give him back to you!"
Scarlett considered it and felt Fiona might be right. Bernard had always been concerned about her future. Could he have come today to pressure Katherine?
Scarlett and Fiona left, with Anton and the servants also retreated.
Only then did Bernard calm down and quietly watch Katherine, who was focused on eating. He asked gently, "How is it? Do you like it?"
Katherine nodded. "Mr. Mitchell's cooking is good. It's delicious!"
Hearing her approval, Bernard's eyes softened. "Just like when you were a child, you still love this oatmeal."
Katherine was slightly stunned, then looked up calmly at Bernard. "Really? I don't remember much about it."
Bernard frowned. "Aren't you curious how I know your childhood tastes?"
Katherine smiled. "Yes, how do you know my childhood tastes?"
Bernard was silent for a moment before speaking formally, "Katherine, you are actually my long-lost sister. Your real name should be Laura."
Katherine remained calm and took another spoonful of oatmeal, chewing and swallowing it slowly. "I know."
Bernard was shocked. "You know?"
Katherine looked indifferent. "Yeah, I know."
Bernard was confused. "When did you find out?"
Katherine said lightly, "A long time ago, probably not long after I met you."
Bernard was even more puzzled. "Since you knew, why didn't you tell me?"
Katherine laughed mockingly. "Even if I told you, you wouldn't have believed me. In your eyes, I've always been a scheming girl from the countryside trying to climb the social ladder. Imagine if I suddenly told you I was Laura. You'd think I was lying to sneak into your wealthy family, right?"
Bernard's face stiffened. He felt deeply ashamed. "I was prejudiced. It was my fault! I'm sorry. Can you forgive me?"
Katherine put down the bowl and waved her hand. "No! Don't say that! Bernard, you're Scarlett's good brother, not mine."
Bernard understood her rejection but insisted, "Katherine, we are related by blood. I am your brother, always."
Katherine leaned back lazily in her chair, her expression indifferent and cool. "Bernard, I acknowledge that we are related by blood, but to me, that's all it is. In reality, we are strangers who happened to be born from the same mother. Beyond that blood connection, we are from completely different worlds."
Bernard felt deeply guilty. "I know I misunderstood you before. My actions often made you unhappy. I'm sorry! Can you give me a chance to make amends?"
Katherine chuckled. "Let's put aside the blood relation! Bernard, you don't like girls like me who grew up in the countryside, and I don't like men like you who are privileged and think highly of themselves! We have nothing in common and no childhood bond, so let's not force a sibling relationship!"
Bernard tried to explain, "No, it's not like that."
To be honest, he actually admired Katherine, but because of Scarlett, he had been prejudiced and hostile towards her from the start.
Now Katherine finally understood that Bernard wanted to talk to her about this today!
Although she didn't know how Bernard discovered the truth, Katherine didn't want to hear his pleas for forgiveness and recognition.
She smiled politely. "Thanks for the breakfast. I was fortunate to taste the oatmeal you cooked."
Bernard said softly, "If you like it, I can make it for you often."
Katherine interrupted, "No need! Some things become tiresome after one taste! Sorry, I'm a bit tired now, so I won't keep you for lunch! Anton, see the guest out!"
"Yes!" Anton stepped forward. "Mr. Mitchell, this way, please!"
Facing his sister's order to leave, Bernard was at a loss. Remembering his previous attitude towards Katherine, he felt too ashamed to stay. He sighed deeply, stood up, and said, "I'll come to see you another day."
Katherine refused again. "Don't bother. If there's nothing important, don't come again. Bernard, don't forget, I'm now Mrs. Melville. Given the opposing relationship between the two families, it's best we don't have private contact."
Bernard was silent and helplessly turned to leave.
"Wait a minute!" Katherine called out.
Bernard thought his sister had changed her mind and immediately stopped, looking back at her with hopeful eyes.
