Chapter 264 Katherine is Hypocritical and Pretentious
Charles spread his arms wide, asking for a hug, and the little kid mumbled something that sounded like "Daddy."
The guests started whispering among themselves.
"Is the kid Ms. Mitchell's and Mr. Melville's?" one guy asked.
"Probably, the kid looks a lot like Ms. Mitchell," another guy replied.
"But aren't they not married yet? How do they already have a child?" a third guy wondered.
"It's not that weird," someone else chimed in. "They've been together for a while, but family objections kept them from tying the knot. Given their love, it was only a matter of time before they had a kid, right?"
"Charles is so cute!" a fifth guy exclaimed.
Katherine, feeling out of place, took a step back.
Bernard seemed to notice and said quietly, "Ms. Galatea, come with me."
Finally, she could leave. Katherine felt relieved and followed Bernard.
"Yes, Mr. Mitchell," she replied.
Sophie, however, blocked Bernard reluctantly. "Bernard, leaving so soon?"
"Yes, stay here and keep Scarlett company for me," Bernard said.
"Alright, Bernard, don't worry, I will!" Sophie agreed but shot Katherine a warning glare.
Ignoring Sophie's glare, Katherine followed Bernard out of the noisy banquet hall.
Jonathan watched Katherine leave, then took a sip of his wine.
Hilton waved a hand in front of him. "Still looking? Jonathan, you've been eyeing Katherine all night. Don't tell me you like her too?"
Jonathan smiled. "Why not?"
Hilton exchanged a glance with Issac, both looking uneasy.
"Jonathan, you don't mess with a friend's girl! Don't let a woman come between brothers," Hilton warned.
Jonathan smiled indifferently. "Who do you think Katherine belongs to?"
Hilton glanced over at Alex.
At that moment, Alex was surrounded by Scarlett and the child, unable to break free.
Hilton shrugged. "True! Alex and Katherine have nothing to do with each other now!"
Jonathan's smile deepened. "I think so too."
The Mitchell Group's car was driving down the road, Bernard scrolling through his phone with an indifferent expression.
Katherine looked out the window and noticed they were on the highway, not heading towards the city.
Puzzled, she asked, "Mr. Mitchell, where are we going?"
Bernard looked up from his phone but didn't answer. Instead, he told the driver, "Stop the car."
"Yes, sir." The driver pulled into the emergency lane and stopped.
Bernard lifted his chin. "Ms. Galatea, you're off work now. Get out."
Katherine was stunned. "Mr. Mitchell? This is the highway."
Bernard's lips curled with a hint of contempt. "Where this is isn't my concern. I told you to clock out, so it's your responsibility to find your own way home. No boss is required to provide transportation for their employees."
Katherine protested. "I was here for work, accompanying you to the event. Even if you don't drive me home, you should at least drop me off somewhere I can get a cab, right?"
Bernard squinted. "Ms. Galatea, you're asking for too much."
Katherine stared him down. "Any decent boss wouldn't treat their employee like this, Mr. Mitchell."
Bernard chuckled, "Ms. Galatea, can't handle this? I remember you once told me you were different from my sister. She's a delicate flower, but you're a wild grass that can survive any storm. Since you pride yourself on being strong, let's see how you handle today's challenge. I believe the resilient Ms. Galatea can walk off this highway unscathed."
Katherine bit her lip, holding back her anger. If it weren't for needing to stay close to Bernard to investigate her mother's matters, she wouldn't have to tolerate him.
But she had chosen this path, and she had to see it through.
She smiled. "Alright, Mr. Mitchell, I won't disappoint you. Have a safe trip, and I'll see you at the office tomorrow."
With that, she opened the car door and got out without hesitation.
Stopping on the highway was illegal, but Bernard had the driver pull into the emergency lane just to kick her out. This was probably his way of messing with her.
Was this man really her biological brother?
As soon as Katherine got out, the car sped off.
Billy, sitting in the passenger seat, looked uneasy. He glanced at Katherine's small figure disappearing into the dark night through the rearview mirror.
Feeling somewhat guilty, he turned to his boss. "Mr. Mitchell, it's not safe for Ms. Galatea to walk on the highway alone at this hour."
Bernard scoffed. "What? Has she won you over too?"
Billy's face turned awkward, and he quickly shook his head. "No, Mr. Mitchell. I just think that if something happens to Ms. Galatea, it wouldn't be good for you or the company's reputation."
Bernard's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Don't worry, a woman like her won't let anything happen to herself."
A woman like her? What kind of woman did Mr. Mitchell think Ms. Galatea was? Billy couldn't quite understand his boss's change in attitude.
On the way here, Mr. Mitchell had been gentlemanly, expressing concern about Ms. Galatea being cold and instructing him to give her a coat. Now he was heartlessly leaving her on the highway. It was so weird.
Putting away his phone, Bernard gazed out into the dark night, his expression unreadable.
Earlier, while playing cards with Hilton and the others at Moonlight Manor, Scarlett had called him over to show him the coat he had lent Katherine, found by a servant in the garden. The servant said it was found directly below the bathroom window of the second-floor room.
In other words, Katherine had indeed been fooling around with Tony in the room, but when he knocked on the door, she jumped out of the bathroom window and pretended to come in from outside to "prove her innocence."
What a skillful and cunning girl, appearing straightforward and honest on the surface but actually deceitful and manipulative.
Katherine was far from ordinary. She easily made Jonathan fawn over her and had just taken advantage of the blackout to lean into the arms of Alex, whom she claimed not to want to see.
Scarlett was right; Katherine's motive for becoming his secretary was far from simple.
