Chapter 34 Just Lovers
The next day, at three in the afternoon, Katherine arrived at the cafe under Star Bridge as scheduled.
It was a simple and elegant cafe, very quiet inside.
There was only a couple and a man with glasses busy on his laptop.
Katherine randomly chose a seat, ordered a coffee and a dessert, and while eating, she observed the people around her.
The couple seemed to be on a blind date, politely inquiring about each other's preferences, nothing suspicious.
The man with glasses kept staring at his computer, typing on the keyboard, completely engrossed in his work.
Which one of them was the person who texted her? Or maybe that person hadn't arrived yet?
"Katherine!"
Upon hearing a familiar voice, Katherine looked up and saw Mr. Scott.
He was her supervisor during her internship at Apricot Group.
Gavin had gained some weight, but he smiled, revealing his yellow teeth. "Katherine, it's been a while."
In fact, it had only been a few days since Katherine left her job.
Was Gavin the one who texted her?
Katherine asked tentatively, "Mr. Scott, what are you doing here?"
Gavin happily took a seat and said, "Katherine, no need to guess, it's me who's looking for you."
Katherine took a sip of her coffee and asked, "So, yesterday's message was from you, Mr. Scott?"
Gavin nodded and said, "That's right, it was me! I know everything about what happened between you and Mr. Melville."
Katherine was surprised and asked, "So what?"
Gavin smiled and said, "Katherine, let me be honest with you. I was fired by the company because Mr. Melville didn't agree to cooperate on the new project. I think you had a hand in it, too!"
Katherine didn't believe it. "My hand? Mr. Scott, you must be mistaken. As far as I know, it was your relative Ruth who played games in the company, which led to the hacking of the system. I was just a scapegoat. I didn't come to you to clear my name, yet you come to me for accountability?"
Gavin was taken aback. He didn't expect Katherine to be so clear about what happened after she was fired. He felt a bit embarrassed and said, "It's all in the past now. It doesn't really matter whose fault it was. Katherine, it wasn't easy for me to climb from a junior staff member to a manager. At my age, it's very difficult to find another good job. I have elderly parents and children to support..."
Katherine interrupted him, "Mr. Scott, please get to the point."
Seeing that she was straightforward, Gavin went straight to the point. "That day, I saw you in Mr. Melville's car, and yesterday, I saw you having fondue with him. I can tell that you have a close relationship with Mr. Melville. So, I want to ask for your help."
Katherine was a bit curious. "How can I help you?"
Gavin smiled cunningly and said, "Katherine, with your relationship with Mr. Melville, he should listen to you, right? As long as you can convince Mr. Melville to agree to cooperate with Apricot Group again, Mr. Green will naturally reinstate me!"
Katherine understood. "And if I'm not willing?"
Gavin was confident and said coldly, "I've done my investigation. Mr. Melville got married not long ago. Katherine, if his wife finds out about your relationship with him, what do you think will happen to you?"
His wife? Katherine paused for a moment, then understood and couldn't help but laugh. "I don't know. I suppose I'll get a good beating from his wife!"
Gavin snorted, "As long as you know! If you want me to keep it a secret, you have to find a way to make Mr. Melville agree to cooperate with Apricot Group!"
Katherine sighed helplessly, "Mr. Scott, it's not that I don't want to help you, but I don't have the ability. You know I'm just a nameless lover; I don't have the power to decide his work."
Gavin smirked and leered, "Of course you can! Just please him in bed, make him happy, and he'll do anything for you!"
Disgusted, Katherine sarcastically chuckled, "I won't do that. How about you, Mr. Scott? Why don't you go and please Mr. Melville in bed? See if you can make him happy."
Gavin was taken aback and then became angry and embarrassed. "Katherine, don't pretend to be innocent! That day in Mr. Melville's car, your clothes were disheveled, and I saw it all! You rely on your youth and beauty to become his lover, and you think you're so great? I'll give you one more chance. Will you help me or not?"
He asked for her help, yet he was still so arrogant.
Katherine calmly picked up a fork, took a bite of her dessert, and smiled faintly. "I'm sorry, I can't do it."
"You ungrateful little bitch!" Gavin slammed his hand on the table in anger and raised it to slap Katherine.
"You're so old, and you still want to lay a hand on a girl? Are you not ashamed?"
A soothing male voice intervened, "Where did you come from? Mind your own business and get lost!"
The man smiled, "I'm her friend. With me here, you better not lay a finger on her."
Gavin realized he couldn't match the strength of this man, who was much taller than him. He clenched his teeth, withdrew his hand, and pointed at Katherine, cursing, "Katherine, you may seem innocent on the surface, but you're actually so promiscuous! Not only did you seduce Mr. Melville, but you also went after him! Fine! If you won't help me, then just wait and see. You will regret it!"
After his threatening words, Gavin stormed off.
Katherine laughed indifferently, unfazed, and continued to enjoy her dessert as if nothing had happened.
The man who helped Katherine pulled out a chair and elegantly sat down across from her, and his handsome face carried a charming smile. "Hi, we meet again! Do you mind if I sit here today?"
Katherine recognized him as the handsome man who had struck up a conversation with her at the Breaking Dawn Bar that day.
"Yes," she replied.
Upon hearing her response, he smiled somewhat helplessly. "I just helped you, and this is how you treat me?"
Katherine glanced at him with disdain. "Sir, it seems you can't distinguish between helping and meddling, can you?"
Even if he hadn't intervened just now, Gavin wouldn't have been able to lay a hand on her.
Not only would Gavin be unable to touch her, but he would also have to endure the pain of her small fork piercing his hand as a consequence of his insulting and vulgar remarks towards women.
The handsome man was filled with a sense of discovery, as if he had found his prey. "You are truly a special girl! My name is Jonathan Mostow. How about we become friends?"
Katherine asked him, "Do you want to be friends with me or pursue me?"
Jonathan hesitated for a moment, then smiled even more brightly, looking at her with great interest. "I want both. Is that okay?"
