Chapter 414 Did Mom Really Make a Mistake?

Katherine raised an eyebrow, half-smiling with a sharp edge. "Do you think I care if you're good to me or not?"

Bernard stayed quiet. He hated his past actions, and it made sense Katherine didn't acknowledge him.

He knew she didn't care about his attitude or the Mitchell family.

But he still hoped she'd come home and let him make things right.

Bernard sighed and asked softly, "Katherine, what do I need to do for you to forgive me? To come home?"

Seeing Bernard's humble demeanor, greatly unlike his usual self, Katherine felt no sympathy.

"Let me be clear. I don't blame you for misunderstanding or treating me poorly before. To me, we were just strangers with a blood relation, and now we're, at best, acquaintances.”

“It's normal for you to doubt, misunderstand, or even dislike me. Please don't act like you're seeking forgiveness; it doesn't suit you."

Bernard was speechless, feeling more helpless than ever.

Katherine continued, "Also, I won't return to the Mitchell family, nor will I acknowledge anyone from your family. This has nothing to do with how you treated me before.”

“As far as I know, back then, the Mitchell family didn't believe I was a Mitchell child and wanted a paternity test, which drove my mother away. Why should I return for you?"

Bernard's eyes tightened. "You remember what happened back then?"

She was so young at the time, and she remembers all that mess.

Katherine replied seriously, "I don't remember, but I've almost found out everything.”

“I know all the surface details, and I will uncover the truth behind them. I won't let the person who wronged my mother escape!”

“And you and everyone in this family are accomplices in driving my mother away!"

Bernard's pupils trembled. After a long silence, he sighed. "Katherine, you don't need to investigate. I'll tell you whatever you want to know."

Katherine's eyes lit up. "Really? Then tell me now, who wronged my mother?"

Bernard looked at her with a complicated expression and said, "No one wronged Mom. The evidence from back then was conclusive; it was our mother who made a mistake in a moment of confusion."

The light in Katherine's eyes dimmed suddenly. "Conclusive evidence? So, you also believe I'm a child my mother had with another man?"

Bernard shook his head. "No, you're not. You are my full-blooded sister. But... our mother did make a mistake back then; no one wronged her."

Katherine scoffed. "Shut up! Don't call yourself my brother,I'm not your sister! Your sister is Scarlett, don't get it wrong!"

Having a brother who didn't trust her mother, Katherine found it laughable!

Even if what Bernard said was true, Katherine would never believe her mother was that kind of person!

Conclusive evidence? Impossible!

Someone must have framed her, and the evidence could have been fabricated!

Bernard's eyes were deep, and he wanted to say something, "Katherine..."

Katherine cut him off. "I'm tired. I'm going downstairs to ask for a guest room. Please move."

Bernard sighed. "If you're tired, you can rest here. No one will bother you. When it's time for dinner, I'll come get you."

He didn't dare call himself her brother anymore, fearing it would anger her again.

Katherine didn't bother with pleasantries. "Fine. Thanks, Mr. Mitchell. I need to rest now, please leave."

Bernard gave her a long look, then took the broken music box and left, closing the door behind him.

Outside, he noticed Scarlett lurking nearby.

He frowned. "Why are you still here? Shouldn't you be looking after Charles?"

Scarlett, caught off guard, tried to explain. "I was worried you'd get mad at Katherine because of the broken music box, so I stayed."

Bernard's expression darkened. "I won't get mad at her. Mind your own business and go look after Charles."

Scarlett frowned. "Why are you the only one coming out? Where's Katherine?"

Bernard replied, "She's tired and resting inside. Don't disturb her."

Scarlett's eyes widened. "You let Katherine rest in that room? That's Laura's room. Didn't you hate it when people touched Laura's things?"

Bernard paused, then said, "She saved Grandpa's life, so she deserves the best hospitality and has the right to rest in any room.

Despite his explanation, Scarlett found it strange. Bernard's attitude towards Katherine was definitely off.

Ignoring her, Bernard took out his phone and called. "Billy, I'm on the second floor. Come up immediately."

Within a minute, Billy arrived.

Bernard gave strict instructions. "Billy, stand guard here. Ms. Galatea is resting inside. Don't let anyone disturb her."

Billy nodded. "Yes, sir."

Bernard handed him the broken music box. "Get this restored. Also, clean up the glass shards in the room so the guest doesn't get hurt."

Billy took the music box and nodded. "Understood, sir."

Bernard then returned to his room, looking somber. He needed some time alone.

Scarlett watched him leave, full of suspicion. What was going on? How could Bernard's attitude towards Katherine change so drastically in just a few days?

After a moment, Scarlett decided to go in and question Katherine about their conversation.

But Billy stopped her. "Ms. Galatea is resting. You can't go in."

Scarlett tried her usual tactic, pleading softly, "Billy, I just want to keep Katherine company. I won't disturb her rest."

Billy remained firm. "Ms. Mitchell, you heard Mr. Mitchell's orders. Please don't make things difficult for me."
