Chapter 226 The Promised Three Months Are Up
When Alex turned around, Katherine and the others were nowhere to be seen in the hospital corridor.
Was he imagining things? He could've sworn he just heard Katherine's voice.
Scarlett came back with the medicine and said, "Alex, I got the baby's meds. We can head home now."
Alex nodded slightly, holding the baby, who was already dozing off on his broad shoulder, and they walked toward the elevator.
Scarlett felt the envious glances from passersby, and a wave of happiness and pride surged in her heart. Katherine, Alex betrayed you. Why are you still going back to Melville Manor?
Katherine squinted, calmly watching the street scene flow by outside the car window.
She replied, "It's not time yet. Alex and I agreed to cooperate for three months from the start. Today is the last day. I need to stay at Melville Manor until midnight to fulfill the term. One must keep their word."
Frank admired Katherine's meticulousness, but he felt helpless. "Katherine, are you... okay?"
They could tell Katherine had developed genuine feelings for Alex during this time.
Especially her reaction when she found out she was pregnant; the softness and shyness in her eyes and brows were something they had almost never seen in Katherine before.
Katherine lightly curled her lips and answered softly, "I'm fine. Just a man, merely a small episode in life."
Frank asked, "Then... what do you plan to do with the child in your belly?"
"Since it's here, I'll accept it. Anyway, Alex has good genes, and it's free. I'll just consider it borrowing his seed, saving me the trouble of going to a sperm bank later!" she answered. With that, Katherine closed her eyes wearily and said, "Alright, I'll take a nap. Wake me when we arrive."
Ambrosia and Frank exchanged a helpless glance and stayed silent.
Katherine leaned back in her seat with her eyes closed, but she couldn't fall asleep.
To say she wasn't sad at all would be a lie.
Alex had been really good to her lately; he was extremely gentle, accommodating, meticulous, and obedient.
She had a rough life and had never been so carefully cared for, which led her to believe that Alex was different from other men, someone she could occasionally rely on.
So she tried to open her heart and let him in, seriously considering whether to spend the rest of her life with him.
Only to find out it was her own foolish, wishful thinking.
Women were always so easily caught in the whirlpool of emotions created by men's skillful gentleness, and she was no exception.
Forget it. Just consider it another lesson from fate!
A fall into the pit, a gain in the wit.
Katherine admitted she was sad, but not to the point of breaking down. Now, she just felt a slight pain in her chest.
She had endured many hurts since childhood; this pain was nothing and would pass with time.
A wound would eventually heal.
At Melville Manor, Anton greeted respectfully, "Mrs. Melville, you're back. Have you had lunch?"
Katherine changed into slippers and walked in. "Not yet. Anton, I want something light for lunch."
Anton bowed and said, "Yes, Mrs. Melville. I'll have someone prepare something light and send it to your room."
Katherine nodded. "Okay, thank you."
She walked upstairs to her room as usual, stopping halfway up the stairs and turning back. "By the way, Anton, did you receive the things I had sent over this morning?"
A local courier had delivered the gifts she retrieved from the Galatea family, which should have arrived at the Melville Manor by now.
Anton replied, "Yes, I received them. I've had them stored properly in the storage room. Do you want to take a look, Mrs. Melville?"
Katherine waved her hand dismissively. "No need. Just inform Mr. Melville when he returns."
Anton understood and said, "Yes, Mrs. Melville."
After giving her instructions, Katherine continued up the upstairs.
The gifts from the Melville family were very valuable. She had to return them to clear her debt.
Anton watched Mrs. Melville's back as she went upstairs, sensing something was off but unable to pinpoint what.
Unable to figure it out, he stopped thinking about it and turned to instruct the kitchen to prepare a light lunch for Mrs. Melville.
Mr. Melville had specifically instructed about Mrs. Melville's diet before he left. Mrs. Melville had allergies, and all allergens had to be absolutely excluded. Anton had to check the ingredients every day to be at ease personally.
Katherine took a shower, changed into casual clothes, and after eating the lunch brought by the maid, she went to bed.
Perhaps due to her pregnancy, she always felt very tired.
Lying in bed, she finally felt a bit more comfortable and relaxed. She had gotten used to sleeping in Alex's bed during this time and was now somewhat reluctant to leave it.
Eventually, Katherine fell into a deep sleep with her chaotic thoughts.
Late at night, the weather turned cold, and a strong wind began to blow.
The wind awakened Anton, and he quickly instructed the servants to check all the doors and windows, to prevent dust and cold air from affecting Mrs. Melville's sleep.
At that moment, a car's headlights suddenly shone into the yard through the floor-to-ceiling windows on the first floor, and the sound of the engine grew closer.
Anton looked outside and saw it was Alex's car!
It was already past midnight; why was Alex coming back at this hour?
A few minutes later, Alex walked in, looking travel-worn.
Anton was already waiting at the door and called out, "Mr. Melville, you're back!"
Alex took off his coat, which was still cold from the outside, and handed it to a nearby servant. "Where is she?"
Anton knew exactly who Mr. Melville was asking about and replied, "At this hour, Mrs. Melville should be fast asleep."
Alex acknowledged, bypassed the servants who came forward to attend to him, and strode upstairs.
After receiving Katherine's call during the day, he had been thinking about her and couldn't resist coming back to see her.
It was rare for Katherine to admit she missed him. That simple word "miss" was like a hook in his heart, making him itch with longing.
He quickly went upstairs, and as he approached the room, he remembered she was sleeping and deliberately lightened his steps.
He placed his large hand on the doorknob and tried to turn it; the door wasn't locked.
Silly girl, she didn't lock the door when she slept because he wasn't home?
Alex pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a mix of amusement and helplessness. Gently, he opened the door and stepped inside.
The room was dark with no moonlight due to the overcast and windy weather, making everything indistinguishable.
Alex said, "I'm back."
He sat by the bed, his gaze falling on the spot where she usually slept, his voice low and gentle.
However, he received no response.
Katherine was probably sleeping soundly.
