Chapter 292 Katherine Is Pregnant!
Scarlett shot a cold glare at Katherine's back before switching to her usual sweet smile.
She turned to the new secretary. "Lisa, I need you to keep an eye on Bernard. Lots of women try to get close to him under the guise of work, and I don't want him bothered by them."
Lisa nodded. "Got it, Ms. Mitchell. I'll keep you updated on anything about Mr. Mitchell, especially any moves from the sales manager. She won't get near him!"
"Thanks, Lisa. You're different from the others. Keep it up!" Scarlett smiled warmly and walked into her brother's office.
Lisa blushed, feeling a rush of excitement.
Ms. Mitchell just said she was different from other girls and encouraged her to keep it up.
Lisa thought, 'Does this mean... Ms. Mitchell doesn't mind me getting close to Mr. Mitchell? Do I have a chance to become part of the Mitchell family? Would Ms. Mitchell approve of me as a sister-in-law?'
If that's true, then Ms. Mitchell was just as kind as the rumors suggest, without any of the typical airs of a wealthy heiress!
In the president's office, Scarlett walked in with a thermos. Bernard frowned at the test paper his younger brother Sunny had just completed. The more he looked, the deeper his frown became.
Bernard questioned, "What have you been learning all these yearsif you can't even solve basic math problems?"
Sunny looked terrified, keeping his head down and not daring to speak.
He couldn't solve any of the problems, but he didn't dare leave them blank in front of his brother, so he guessed randomly.
Bernard pinched the bridge of his nose, unwilling to admit that this lazy and dim-witted kid was part of the Mitchell family, his brother!
He had intended to check Sunny's mistakes and explain the key points, but he didn't find a single correct answer!
All the tutors he had hired over the years were a waste. Despite years of guidance from various renowned teachers, Sunny was still at an elementary school level, beyond help.
Bernard, with a stern face, threw the paperback at Sunny. "Redo it all!"
"Okay." Sunny was so scared he didn't dare breathe loudly and silently began rewriting.
Seeing this, Scarlett sighed helplessly and walked over to Bernard. "Bernard, are you helping Sunny with his homework? Don't get so worked up. I brought some soup for you two. Take a break and have some soup."
Bernard looked up at her voice, his displeased expression unchanged. "Why are you here at the office again? Charles is still injured in the hospital. If you're not there to take care of him, who will?"
Scarlett was taken aback and felt deeply uneasy about Bernard's attitude.
Bernard had never spoken to her in such a cold and displeased tone before. Ever since Katherine exposed her for bribing the restaurant staff yesterday, Bernard had been looking at her coldly and barely speaking to her.
Scarlett softly explained, "I asked Sophie and the nanny to watch him. I thought you were working hard, so I brought you some soup. The nanny specially made the soup for Charles! Bernard, you're working hard. Can you have some chicken soup to replenish your energy?"
Bernard glanced at the thermos in her hand, his eyes indifferent. "He has burns and should avoid greasy food."
Scarlett's face turned pale. "I know, I—"
"Alright, leave the soup and go back to the hospital to stay with Charles," Bernard cut her off, picking up a document from his desk, clearly done with the conversation.
The document in his hand was the sales plan Katherine had just submitted. As Bernard read the clear and organized text and data, Katherine's words about expanding production and sales in the food industry echoed in his mind.
He wondered if Laura were still alive, would she have missed out on these foods because of inadequate promotion? If she had tasted her favorite childhood snacks, would she have reminisced about her childhood and wanted to come home to see her brother?
Katherine's sales plan might actually work.
Seeing that Bernard didn't want to listen to her and didn't even look at her, Scarlett felt awkward and at a loss, unable to move forward or retreat.
Sunny, who was doing his homework, also sensed the tense atmosphere. He looked at his sister and then at Bernard's cold attitude, feeling very uneasy.
Last night at home, Sunny had already sensed something was off.
Since childhood, Bernard had always favored Scarlett the most. Whatever Scarlett said, Bernard almost always complied!
But yesterday, for some reason, Bernard barely paid attention to Scarlett, and now he was still so cold towards her.
This had never happened before. What was going on?
Scarlett thought for a moment, then walked over to Bernard and placed the thermos on his desk. She softly said to Sunny, who was doing his homework, "Sunny, stop writing for now. Take a break. I need to talk to Bernard for a bit. You can come back later to have some soup with Bernard."
"Okay!" Sunny was more than happy to comply. He couldn't solve any of the problems, and staying here would only get him scolded by Bernard.
Scarlett suddenly gave him a chance to leave, so he didn't hesitate to put down his pen and quickly slipped out!
After Sunny left, Scarlett turned to her brother, who was seriously reviewing the document. She hesitated for a moment, then spoke in a tearful voice, "Bernard, do you really despise me now?"
Hearing the tearful tone in his sister's voice, Bernard looked up at her, his eyes showing a mix of complexity and fatigue. "Alright, stop crying at the drop of a hat. You're twenty now, not a child. You should know that crying doesn't solve any problems."
Scarlett truly felt the crisis. Bernard used to comfort her immediately when she cried, but today he didn't. He even showed a hint of annoyance at her tears.
She explained, "Bernard, I know what I did yesterday was wrong. I was misguided. But you never gave me a chance to explain! I was desperate. I couldn't see any other option."
Bernard sensed something amiss and frowned. "Desperate? Who forced you?"
Scarlett wiped her tears and recited the pre-prepared explanation, "I didn't want to use that method to drive Katherine away. But she bragged in the restroom that she was pregnant with Alex's child! I panicked. How could I compete with her? Bernard, how can someone like me, who can never have children, compete with someone as healthy and fertile as Katherine! If Alex knew she was pregnant, he would definitely ignore me and Charles. I was scared that Katherine would use her pregnancy to take Alex away again, that's why I acted out of desperation. Bernard, I'm sorry! I realize my mistake. I really do."
Bernard's expression froze. Katherine was pregnant?
