Chapter 315 This Brother Is Better Off Without!
"Bernard!"
Scarlett's eyes welled up instantly. Sitting in her wheelchair, she clung to Bernard's leg, crying her heart out.
Bernard was taken aback by her sudden outburst. He frowned. "Why are you crying? Is your foot hurting too much? Don't worry, I'll take you to the hospital!"
He had been upstairs on a conference call, dealing with some tricky business, and hadn't come down, so he had no idea what had happened.
Scarlett sobbed, "No, bro, my foot's fine. It doesn't hurt..."
"Then what's wrong? Tell me." Bernard bent down, gently patting her back to soothe her.
Scarlett just cried, too upset to speak.
Seeing her like this and getting no answers, Bernard turned to Scarlett's best friend. "Sophie, what's going on with Scarlett?"
Facing her crush, Sophie felt a bit shy. After a moment, she said, "Bernard, Scarlett's feeling wronged. It's all Katherine's fault; she's such a bully!"
Bernard's brow furrowed. "Katherine? What did she do this time?"
Sophie explained, "Katherine pushed Scarlett down the stairs, causing her to sprain her ankle and miss the performance. I asked Katherine to fill in for Scarlett and sing a piece from 'The Phantom of the Opera,' but she used her singing skills to embarrass Scarlett in front of Mr. Ayers, who then scolded Scarlett in public!"
She continued, "Later, Katherine somehow got Mr. Ayers to announce her as his god-granddaughter publicly! And Scarlett was rejected by Mr. Ayers, who even said she should never come to the Ayers family again! Bernard, how could Scarlett not feel wronged and heartbroken?"
Bernard was momentarily stunned. What? Grandpa recognized Katherine as his god-granddaughter?
Grandpa was so strict; how could he easily recognize a stranger he just met as his god-granddaughter?
Katherine was really something. In such a short time, she managed to get Grandpa to acknowledge her.
She definitely had ulterior motives for coming to the Ayers family today. What exactly was her goal?
"Where is she now?"
Sophie said, "She's probably still with Mr. and Mrs. Ayers. Bernard, Katherine is really up to no good. She'll do anything to climb the social ladder! You can't let her succeed, or she'll use the Ayers family's backing to bully Scarlett even more!"
Bernard squinted his eyes and turned towards the door, instructing, "Billy, get Katherine here!"
As the focal point of the birthday celebration, Marcus remained in the banquet hall, mingling with the guests.
In the study, Katherine was playing Go with Aria, using the game to stimulate Aria's mind, which would also help with her condition.
Sunny was watching from the side, occasionally giving his grandmother some random advice.
Suddenly, there were two knocks on the study door.
"Who is it?" Sunny turned his head and asked.
Billy recognized Sunny's voice and respectfully said, "Mr. Sunny, it's me."
Upon hearing Billy's voice, Sunny immediately felt nervous. "Uh... Billy, what do you need?"
Could it be that Bernard sent Billy to drag him home to do his homework?
Billy said, "Is Miss Katherine inside? Mr. Bernard asked me to call her over; he has something to discuss with her."
Relieved that Bernard wasn't looking for him, Sunny let out a sigh of relief and nodded towards Katherine. "Hey, it's for you!"
Katherine placed a white stone on the board and then stood up calmly. "Mrs. Ayers, Sunny will play with you for now. I'll be back soon."
Seeing her leave, Aria looked uneasy and also wanted to stand up and follow.
Katherine stepped forward nd gently pressed Aria down, comforting her. "Don't worry. I won't go far. I'll be back soon to continue our game."
Aria still felt uneasy but nodded. "You must come back quickly!"
Katherine smiled. "Yes, I will be back soon!"
After comforting Aria, she turned and left.
Sunny plopped down in Katherine's seat and started to reset the Go board. "Grandma, Go is boring. Let's play checkers instead!"
He would never admit that he wasn't very good at Go.
Katherine followed Billy to the guest room where Bernard was.
As soon as she walked in, she saw Scarlett and Sophie there as well.
Scarlett sat in a wheelchair, sobbing softly, while Sophie was beside her, comforting her and handing her tissues.
Sophie gave Katherine a discreet glare as she entered!
Katherine didn't pay attention to the two of them and turned to look at Bernard, who was sitting on the sofa.
Bernard leaned back on the sofa, sitting in a lazy yet authoritative manner. He held a cup of steaming coffee, which he sipped lightly.
She walked over and asked, "Mr. Mitchell, you called me?"
Bernard looked at her, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Did you push Scarlett, causing her foot injury?"
"No."
Katherine denied it without hesitation.
Bernard's eyes flashed with a hint of sarcastic coldness as he asked again, "Did you just embarrass Scarlett in public?"
Katherine remained unfazed. "I only spoke the truth."
Bernard snorted and asked again, "Then, how did you get my grandfather to recognize you as his god-granddaughter?"
Katherine replied, "Mr. Ayers was kind enough to offer, and I couldn't refuse his generosity."
Bernard sneered. "So, you're saying you were reluctant?"
Katherine nodded. "Yes, very reluctant."
Bernard's eyes turned cold instantly.
Before this, he sometimes admired Katherine's work abilities and had an inexplicable fondness for her, thinking she wasn't like those scheming women.
But seeing her so calculated, even targeting the Ayers family, he found it hard to believe she was innocent!
Bernard stood up and splashed a cup of hot coffee on Katherine's face. "Ms. Galatea, if you want to climb the social ladder, do it elsewhere. I believe with your abilities, it wouldn't be hard. But in my domain, you won't get your way!"
Caught off guard, Katherine instinctively closed her eyes to avoid the coffee splashing into them.
Letting the hot coffee drip from her face, she slowly opened her eyes after a moment. "Mr. Mitchell, thank you for acknowledging my abilities, but I don't have the intentions or actions you suspect."
Bernard looked at her coldly. "Whether you do or not, you know it yourself—no need to argue with me. Now, you're not welcome here. You can leave."
If it weren't for today being her grandfather's birthday banquet, for the sake of good luck, she really wanted to fight Bernard!
Katherine took a deep breath, not wanting to say more to him, and turned to leave.
"Wait."
Bernard called out to her again.
Katherine stopped, holding back her patience. "Mr. Mitchell, is there anything else?"
Bernard announced without any emotion. "You don't need to come to work tomorrow. The Mitchell Group will no longer have a place for you."
Hearing this, Sophie smirked with satisfaction, and Scarlett also curled her lips sinisterly. Their goal was achieved.
Katherine didn't say anything; she just smiled lightly and calmly left the room.
A brother who easily believed in slanderous words was not worth having!
Katherine walked out drenched and looking quite disheveled. It was unsuitable for her to return to play Go with Aria, and she didn't want to scare Aria and cause a fuss.
It was better to leave for now and visit Grandma another day.
She deliberately chose a quiet route to leave the Ayers family, not wanting to attract attention, but unexpectedly, she ran into Alex head-on.
