Chapter 550 Monster
Katherine was totally caught off guard. She never saw Celine's hidden agenda coming and felt kinda awkward about it.
Worried that Katherine might get the wrong idea, Celine quickly jumped in, "Hey, Katherine, don't get me wrong. I'm thinking about my son's future, but I'm also worried about you. I don't want you ending up with some loser like I did and wasting your life. My husband might be a player, but my son? Nah, he's not like that. He's hated his dad since he was a kid and swore he'd either stay single or be loyal to one woman forever. My son’s the only guy I trust, so I hope you can be with him and dodge some heartache."
Katherine never imagined Celine would go all out to pitch her son to her. "Celine, I'm sorry, but I gotta let you down. I have a boyfriend now."
Celine gave a helpless smile, "I get it. I was overthinking. A girl as awesome as you? Of course, you’d have a boyfriend. I've watched you grow up and always thought of you as my own kid. I just want you to find happiness and a guy worth your time."
Katherine nodded, "Thanks, Celine, for understanding."
Celine still felt a bit down. Over the years, she had really hoped Katherine would become her daughter-in-law.
Even Katherine's name was changed by her on purpose.
When Katherine first came to the Temple of Compassion, her name was Theodora.
Celine thought Theodora sounded too lonely and sad, so she changed it to Katherine.
She hoped that one day, Katherine would find someone to be with.
Celine's son was named Alex.
These two kids were her biggest worries. It would be a huge relief if they could end up together and look out for each other.
Back then, she had this gut feeling that when Katherine grew up and left the Temple of Compassion, she’d meet her son, and they’d hit it off.
But she knew the Melville family would probably set Alex up with the most beautiful and well-bred girl around.
She also knew her son well. Alex wouldn’t go for a girl without personality, and she didn’t want him stuck in some business marriage, unable to choose his own partner. "Katherine, if you ever feel that guy isn’t treating you right, you can always come back and talk to me," Celine said, holding Katherine's hand.
Katherine grinned, "Celine, you've been worrying about me for years. I'm ready for anything. Don't stress too much; I'll be alright."
Celine stared at her for a bit, then forced a comforting smile.
Brenda burst in, "Katherine, all your favorite foods are ready. Come on! I'll take you to eat."
Katherine turned to Celine, "Celine, you must be hungry too, right? Come and eat with us?"
Celine waved her off, "Nah, I'm good. You go ahead and eat. I just need some time to myself."
Hearing that, Katherine didn't push it. She nodded, "Alright."
Brenda, not caring if Celine wanted to eat or not, cheerfully pulled Katherine along, "Let's go, Katherine! I'll take you to eat first. If Celine gets hungry, she'll eat later!"
Katherine didn't want to bother Celine, so she bowed to her and followed Brenda out.
As they stepped outside, they saw Jonathan standing under a big tree, reaching up to pluck leaves.
With his head tilted back, his profile looked even more handsome in the dappled sunlight.
He shouldn't be here because everyone would be watching him.
Jonathan seemed to sense her gaze and turned, holding the leaves in his hand. "Done talking with Celine?"
Katherine responded with a faint look.
Brenda glanced between Jonathan and Katherine, seeming to catch on. She smiled, "Katherine, is this your friend?"
Katherine frowned, "Sort of."
Brenda noticed Jonathan's sharp attire and couldn't help but look at him with more respect. "Then invite him to eat with you!"
Jonathan eagerly said, "Can I? I'd love to!"
Katherine shot him a look, "The food here is worse than what we just had. You sure you wanna eat it?"
Jonathan grinned, "It's cool, I'll give it a shot! How will I know if I like it if I don't try?"
Brenda laughed, "Exactly!"
Jonathan smiled, "Then let's go together."
Katherine ignored him and quickened her pace, following Brenda.
She wasn't really hungry, but since she rarely came back, she missed the taste of her childhood and wanted to try it.
However, when it came time to eat, Katherine really couldn't stomach much.
The taste was the same as before, but she was too full to enjoy it.
Still, she managed a few bites.
Surprisingly, Jonathan loved the food at the Temple of Compassion. Not only did he finish his portion, but he also polished off Katherine's leftovers.
