Chapter 506 Is It Possible?
Scarlett's pupils dilated in surprise. Bernard actually risked his life to protect Katherine?
There must have been something wrong here!
Seeing that Scarlett was speechless for a long time, Sophie continued, "Scarlett, why aren't you saying anything? You have to help me! If Alex really pursues this, the Jones family is finished!"
Scarlett snapped back to reality, she replied impatiently, "Sophie, it's not that I don't want to help you, but I can't help you right now! Sigh!"
Sophie was puzzled by her response, and questioned her, "Scarlett, how could you not be able to help me? You saved Alex's life; he always got your back!"
Scarlett sighed deeply, her voice tinged with a tearful tone, "Sophie, you don't know what has happened recently. Alex no longer sees me as his savior and won't support me anymore..."
Sophie was incredulous, "What? How is that possible? We all know that you risked your life to save Alex back then, and as a result, you became infertile for life. Has Alex turned a blind eye to all of this? Alex isn't that kind of person!"
Scarlett sobbed again, then blamed, "It's Katherine... She messed with Alex's mind, saying that she was his savior, not me. Alex believed her and has been ignoring me since then. And... today, Alice and I were kicked out of the Mitchell family by my grandfather and we're sent to live in the countryside, all thanks to Katherine! Because of Katherine, I have nothing left! Sophie, I really want to help you, but I'm powerless. I'm sorry..."
As she spoke, she began to cry again...
Sophie was shocked and furious. "What? Katherine actually made Alex believe that she was his savior? And Scarlett, you've been so pampered at home since you were a child, yet Katherine caused your family to send you to the countryside? How does Katherine get to do all these things?" she said angrily.
Scarlett's helpless tone carried a hint of sarcastic irony, "If Katherine can make Bernard risk his life to protect her, what else can't she do?"
Knowing that Sophie cared most about Bernard, Scarlett deliberately fanned the flames.
Sophie was so angry on the other end of the phone that she was pounding her chest as she yelled, "That bitch Katherine is really harmful!"
Scarlett rolled her eyes impatiently and said, "Sophie, I can't help you in my current situation. If we don't get Katherine away from Alex, our days won't be easy..."
Sophie frowned in worry, and asked, "But how can we get Katherine away from Alex?"
Scarlett hinted, "Sophie, since Alex has already found that driver and has confessed about you, it's only a matter of time before Alex comes after you and the Jones family. But, if Katherine is out of the picture, Alex's affection might come back to me. Then, I might be able to persuade Alex for you..."
Sophie was stunned, pondering the meaning of Scarlett's words, and then seemed to make a decision, "Scarlett, I understand! Wait for my good news!"
With that, Sophie hung up the phone.
Scarlett curled her lips into a cold smile, hoping that this time Sophie, the fool, could handle things cleanly and avoid the impendingtrouble.
Alice walked into Scarlett's room and saw Scarlett staring out the window, lost in thought. She approached and asked, "Scarlett, what are you thinking about? Mom ordered some snacks; you should come out and eat something!"
Scarlett snapped out of her thoughts, turned to look at Alice, and said meaningfully, "Mom, did you know that Bernard had a car accident yesterday?"
Alice looked surprised, "Bernard had a car accident? What happened? He didn't come home yesterday; was it because of the accident?"
Scarlett squinted her cunning eyes as she spoke, "Probably! He didn't come home because he was afraid of worrying Grandparents."
Alice never had much affection for her stepson Bernard, and that kid had never shown her any respect. If he died in a car accident, she wouldn't care; she might even feel relieved about it!
If Bernard died, it would make room for their son Sunny. When Sunny eventually takes over the Mitchell Group one day, Alice would be freed from having to please everyone in the Mitchell family!
Scarlett didn't really care whether Bernard was dead or alive either. She had known since she was a child that Bernard was only affectionate towards her because she reminded him of Laura, something she had worked hard to earn!
She was now thinking about something else, or rather, a possibility... "Mom, do you know how Bernard got into the car accident?" she intrigued.
Alice was indifferent with her response, "I don't care how he got into the car accident! He doesn't care about you anymore, Scarlett, so why worry about him? Just ignore him!"
Scarlett shook her head in denial, and insinuated, "No, I'm not worried about him; I'm suspicious of something."
Alice was taken aback, "What is it?" she asked eagerly.
Scarlett revealed, "Yesterday, a car almost hit Katherine, and Bernard got hurt trying to protect her."
Alice found it unbelievable, saying, "Bernard would actually risk his life for that bitch?"
Scarlett's eyes narrowed with a hint of darkness as she pointed out, "Right? You find it strange too, don't you? Bernard is such a cold person; why would he risk his life to save a woman?"
Alice didn't grasp Scarlett's true suspicion and just said with disgust, "Isn't it because that little bitch is too good at seducing men? Even someone like Bernard couldn't escape her charms!"
Scarlett frowned in frustration and blurted out, "No! Bernard's feelings for Katherine are definitely not romantic!"
Alice was puzzled by this and asked, "If it's not romantic, then what is it? Isn't that all there is between men and women?"
Scarlett looked up and met her mother's eyes, seriously and cautiously speculating, "If Bernard's feelings for Katherine were romantic, he should be extremely against Katherine being with Alex, right? But Bernard hasn't shown any signs of jealousy; instead, he's been very caring towards Katherine and more polite to Alex than before... Mom, don't you find that strange? It doesn't make sense at all!"
Alice thought Scarlett's speculation made sense and nodded in agreement, saying, "Hmm, now that you mention it, it does seem that way! Scarlett, what kind of feelings do you think Bernard has for Katherine?"
Scarlett was silent for a few seconds before voicing the possibility she least wanted to accept, "Mom, do you think Katherine... could be Laura, who went missing years ago? In this world, only Laura would make Bernard risk his life, right?"
Hearing Laura's name, Alice's face darkened with fright. Her biggest fear over the years was that Claire would return with Laura... "Is that... possible?" she said in disbelief.
