Chapter 486 Fool Herself
Katherine took a sip of cold water and smiled at the sweaty Scarlett.
"If I'm right, that black suitcase is full of cash, isn't it? But why would you give Lilian cash? It can't be out of the goodness of your heart to help me, can it?“
”There's only one reason: you bribed Lilian, who never liked me, to slander me and get me kicked out of the Melville family. When that didn't work, you had Lilian teach Camila and Fern to stir up trouble online.“
”Those two clearly don't understand the internet; someone had to guide them. And Lilian is great at creating buzz online. Back then, no one could hype better than her to make her daughter Sherry famous.“
”But Lilian's guidance alone isn't enough. You need money to keep the online drama going. The Galatea family has no money or connections, so they couldn't sustain it, especially with the Melville Group pressuring the media.“
”Yet, Camila and Fern are still causing trouble on foreign websites, which means they have outside support. Who would risk offending the Melville family to back them?“
”Only the Mitchell family would dare to go against the Melville family, right?"
Vincent and Hellen felt wronged and frowned. The Mitchell and Melville families didn't get along, but they wouldn't kick someone when they're down, especially over unrelated matters.
Bernard, however, saw Katherine's point and asked, "Katherine, so you mean... "
Katherine took another sip of water. "I mean, the mastermind behind the online slander is Scarlett. She's been manipulating everything from behind the scenes."
Vincent and Hellen looked at Scarlett in disbelief.
Bernard wasn't surprised anymore. Scarlett's recent behavior had shown him how blind he'd been to her true nature.
Still trying to play the victim, Scarlett glared at Katherine. "Katherine, what right do you have to accuse me? Do you have any evidence? I don't even know those people slandering you online. You can't just blame me to clear your own name!"
Katherine snorted. "You don't know them because you're cautious and never contacted them directly. You gave money to Lilian to guide them and used the Mitchell family's overseas influence to push those false rumors to the top!"
Scarlett cried and shook her head. "No! I didn't... Katherine, don't frame me! I just went out for a drive this morning. I didn't expect you to seize this opportunity to accuse me!"
Katherine had expected this reaction. "Who's slandering whom here, Scarlett? To destroy me, you even disregarded your beloved Alex. You're ruthless!"
Scarlett, realizing she had no solid argument, switched to playing the victim. She put on a deeply hurt expression. "Enough! Stop talking! I never did what you said, Katherine. I've given up on Alex. I won't compete with you for him anymore! Please, let me go! If you hate me so much, I'll hit myself to make you feel better, okay? Will that make you happy?"
She started slapping herself, crying and hitting her face repeatedly.
People who cried when they couldn't argue were the worst. Katherine felt no pity for Scarlett's act.
But in the Mitchell family, Scarlett was still the pampered princess. As soon as she started crying, Vincent and Hellen's brows furrowed.
Even if Scarlett had done something wrong, her family still loved her and wanted to give her a chance to make things right.
Bernard looked at Scarlett with a complicated expression. He despised deceitful and scheming people, but Scarlett had grown up under his watch. Even if he no longer liked or admired her, he still had some feelings. Watching her slap herself until her face turned red made him uncomfortable, but thinking of what she had done to Katherine, he stayed silent.
Alice, of course, felt the most pity for Scarlett. She quickly went over to stop her. "Scarlett, what are you doing? She's an outsider. If she doesn't like you, that's her problem. We still love you! Stop hitting yourself! It hurts me to see this!"
Scarlett broke free from Alice's restraint, crying harder and hitting herself more forcefully. "Mom, don't stop me! Katherine hates me. If I don't make her feel better, she'll keep picking on me, keep targeting and slandering me. I don't want Grandparents and Bernard to be disappointed in me because of Katherine's lies. This is the only way to make her feel better."
Alice started crying too. "Scarlett..."
Inspired by Scarlett, Alice began slapping herself as well. "Katherine, you must be angry because you heard me badmouthing you in front of her Grandparents when you came in, right? If you have any complaints, take them out on me, don't bully Scarlett anymore! You've already taken the man she loves most, isn't that enough? I beg you, let Scarlett go."
The living room descended into chaos with the sound of Alice and Scarlett slapping themselves.
The servants, who had worked in the Mitchell family for decades, had never seen such a scene. They couldn't help but think Katherine was formidable, able to corner Alice and Scarlett like this in front of Vincent and Hellen.
"Enough! Stop making fools of yourselves!" Bernard shouted in frustration.
Alice and Scarlett froze, looking at Bernard in fear.
Scarlett, with a swollen face and red eyes, looked at Bernard, her hoarse voice full of grievance. "Bernard..."
