Chapter 983 How Did You Meet
This wine has a high alcohol content and a strong taste. She only took a small sip and felt her throat burn like it was on fire.
"I don't usually come to these kinds of events, so I'm a bit uncomfortable. Ms. Pearl, go have fun, don't worry about me. I can just sit here by myself."
Virginia smiled, "That won't do. You're Bernard's friend, so I have to take good care of you. But..."
She tilted her head slightly and leaned closer to Christina, "Bernard has never been one to make friends, especially not female friends! Ms. Russell, you're the first female friend Bernard has brought to a party, which makes me very curious. How did you two meet?"
How did they meet?
That was a tricky question.
Christina frowned, not knowing how to answer.
She couldn't possibly tell Virginia that she and Bernard had first met in a hotel room, could she?
It was clear that Bernard wanted to maintain the image of being single in front of Virginia. If Christina exposed the truth, Bernard would probably be angry.
"We just met through work. Ms. Pearl, we're not very close, just ordinary acquaintances. You don't need to worry."
Virginia's expression was subtle, she kept smiling but said nothing.
"Ms. Pearl," Christina hesitated before asking, "How did you and Bernard meet?"
"We've known each other since we were kids. I know everything about him and his habits! We're what people often call childhood friends!"
Virginia smiled, but her eyes seemed devoid of any warmth.
She stared intently at Christina's expression, trying to detect any details from her face.
She looked for a long time but couldn't see any reaction from Christina.
"So you and Bernard are childhood friends!" Christina raised her head and drank the wine in her glass in one gulp, a smile on her lips.
Virginia lowered her head, revealing a very ambiguous smile, "Yes, we know each other better than anyone else in the world."
"Virginia, come over here!" someone called out.
Virginia patted Christina's shoulder meaningfully, then stood up and walked over to her friends.
Christina was left alone in the corner again, the lively atmosphere on the other side had nothing to do with her.
Feeling uncomfortable, Christina quietly left the private room. It seemed Bernard didn't need her either.
She returned to the hall and found a quiet corner to stand in.
Leaning against the balcony railing, Christina looked at the bright lights outside. The world was beautiful, but it felt distant and unrelated to her.
The differences between people were destined from birth.
For example, Virginia was beautiful and elegant. After entering the entertainment industry, she gained a large number of fans with her first movie, and her acting career developed smoothly.
While she was ordinary, they were worlds apart.
Christina shook her head, trying to shake off these self-pitying thoughts.
As long as she paid off Bernard's three million dollars and played the role of his wife for a year, she could gain complete freedom and live her own life.
Right now, the most important thing for her was to make money!
Christina turned around to leave but saw Ruben.
Thinking of what Bernard said to Ruben earlier, Christina felt a wave of discomfort.
She wasn't worthy of Ruben before, and she was even less worthy now.
"Why are you here alone? Where's Bernard?" Seeing Christina, Ruben was momentarily stunned but quickly regained his gentle and elegant smile and walked over to her.
Christina also smiled, "He's talking with friends, so I'm just walking around by myself."
"Bernard's friends?" Ruben pondered for a moment, "Is it Virginia?"
Hearing him mention Virginia's name, Christina's expression darkened.
Sure enough, Virginia and Bernard were indeed childhood friends. Even Ruben thought of Virginia first when mentioning Bernard's friends.
"Have you met Virginia?" Ruben came to her side, "She's a big star now, with many fans."
Christina smiled and nodded, "Yes, I've met her. She's really beautiful. But I don't usually follow the entertainment industry, so I didn't recognize her right away."
"It seems you weren't interested in the entertainment industry even in high school. Other girls were all obsessed with celebrities, you never seemed to care. After all these years, you're still the same."
In high school, Christina was mostly alone, which made her seem aloof and unsociable to others.
"It's not that, I was just busy with my studies, so I didn't have time to pay attention to it." Christina smiled, not mentioning the pressure she was under at the time.
"Then..." Ruben looked at Christina, hesitated for a moment before asking, "How did you and Bernard end up together?"
Christina knew Ruben would ask this question. After all, she and Bernard didn't seem like they belonged in the same world. Anyone would be curious about how they got together.
"We met by chance." Christina lowered her eyes and smiled bitterly, being vague, "But our marriage hasn't been made public yet, Ruben; please try not to mention it to others!"
A hint of sadness flashed in Ruben's eyes, and he forced a bitter smile, "Don't worry, no one dares to say anything about Bernard."
All these years, he had been trying to catch up with Bernard.
But Bernard's starting point was already the endpoint for many people. It wasn't easy for Ruben to catch up with him.
Bernard was now the head of the Mitchell family. Even though Ruben's family didn't rely on the Mitchell family for development, they didn't dare to oppose Bernard in any way. He couldn't afford to offend Bernard.
While they were talking, Christina's phone beeped twice. She took it out and saw a message.
It was from Bernard: [Virginia is drunk, I'm taking her home. Call Billy, he'll come to pick you up.]
Looking at the message, Christina sighed helplessly. She was indeed someone who could be abandoned at any time, no matter where she was.
"Ruben, I'm sorry, it's getting late, I have to go. Let's meet again sometime." Christina smiled and said goodbye to Ruben, lifting her dress and leaving the party.
Walking on the road in high heels, Christina felt an indescribable frustration.
She didn't call Billy, she just wanted to walk alone.
But these high heels were really a kind of beautiful nuisance. They looked good, but walking in them was extremely uncomfortable!
Irritated, Christina took off her high heels and continued barefoot.
Indeed, she was out of place with these glamorous accessories.
A white car stopped beside her, and Ruben's face appeared from the window, smiling, "Christina, get in the car, I'll take you home."
