Chapter 265 Where Did You Go

Katherine stood alone on the highway shoulder, the darkness punctuated by the occasional rush of speeding cars.

Walking on the highway is dangerous, so Katherine stayed put and turned on her phone's flashlight to make herself visible to passing vehicles.

She called her subordinate, Ambrosia.

"Ambrosia, where are you?" Katherine asked.

"I'm abroad. Didn't you ask me to come today to discuss the acquisition? I had a flight this morning. Did you forget?" Ambrosia replied.

Katherine pinched the bridge of her nose. Pregnancy was really messing with her memory; she had forgotten Ambrosia was out of the country.

"What's wrong? Did the Mitchell family banquet go smoothly?" Ambrosia asked.

"Be safe. I'll have Frank come pick me up," Katherine said.

After hanging up, Katherine called Frank. But his phone just rang and rang. No answer. What was he up to?

Listening to the busy signal, Katherine looked around at the pitch-black surroundings and frowned. Was she really going to spend the night alone on the highway?

In the past, spending a night outside in the cold wouldn't have been a big deal. She had endured harsh environments and cold winter nights as a child. But now she was pregnant. She could risk her own body, but she had to consider the baby inside her.

If she spent the night in the cold, she might catch a cold, and the baby would suffer too. Plus, she couldn't take any medication.

If she called the police for help, it might make the news tomorrow!

As she hesitated, a blinding light suddenly shone towards her.

Katherine instinctively raised her arm to shield her eyes. What was going on? Did someone else's car break down, too?

When the light dimmed and switched to hazard lights, Katherine could finally open her eyes and see her surroundings.

Leander got out of the passenger seat, approached her solemnly, and said respectfully, "Ms. Galatea, Mr. Melville asked you to get in the car."

Katherine glanced at the nearby Mercedes with the familiar license plate and puzzled over Alex's presence.

Why was he on the highway, too? Whether he was going to the Melville Group or the Melville Manor, this wasn't the direction.

After a brief pause, Katherine politely said to Leander, "Please thank Mr. Melville for his kindness, but there's no need to trouble him. My friend will arrive soon to pick me up."

She had no reason to get in his car now.

Alex had a fiancée and a child. Any sensible girl would know to avoid suspicion.

Leander looked a bit helpless but insisted. "Ms. Galatea, please don't make it difficult for me. We can't stay parked on the highway for too long. If you don't get in the car, it's not safe for any of us to stay here."

Katherine was at a loss for words.

From Leander's tone, it seemed that if she didn't get in the car, he wouldn't be able to report back and would have to stay here with her!

His style of not allowing refusal was still the same.

Katherine felt a bit annoyed but had no choice.

She considered the time displayed on her phone, which was nearing midnight, and felt it was too much to trouble the police to come out just for her.

"Alright, I'll take the ride," Katherine said.

She walked towards the luxury Mercedes, and Leander quickly stepped ahead to open the back door for her.

Once inside, she was hit by a strong smell of smoke. Alex was smoking, and even with the window open, the smoke lingered.

His recent smoking habit seemed to worsen, evident from his constant smoking at Moonlight Manor.

Considering the baby inside her, Katherine felt uncomfortable with the secondhand smoke filling the car. But this was someone else's space. She had no right to be picky. She lowered her window to let the smoke out and politely said, "Thanks for the ride, Mr. Melville. Just drop me off at the highway exit, and I'll catch a cab home."

Alex sat casually, cigarette in hand, and glanced at her. His mature, deep-set face was inscrutable. After a moment, he let out a cold laugh.

Katherine felt uneasy under his gaze and didn't understand what that cold laugh meant. What was Alex laughing at? Was there something funny about what she had just said?

After a long pause, Alex finally spoke in a tone devoid of warmth, "Where have you been?"

"What?" Katherine asked, surprised by his abrupt question.

Alex's piercing gaze bore into her, exuding authority. "I asked you, where have you been for the past month?"

Katherine blinked awkwardly and then answered, "I haven't been anywhere, just wandering around."

Alex narrowed his eyes, took a drag of his cigarette, and slowly exhaled the smoke. His mocking tone hinted at suppressed emotions. "Wandering around? Ms. Galatea's wandering is quite cautious, leaving no trace. Do you really not want to be found by me?"

Katherine replied calmly, "I just like to protect my privacy. Is there something you need from me, Mr. Melville?"

Observing her indifferent demeanor, Alex seethed with anger. He felt an urge to strangle this heartless woman!

Alex furrowed his brows and reprimanded, "What do you think I need from you?"

Katherine turned her face away, gazing out the window at the passing scenery with nonchalance. "I don't know. Mr. Melville is such a mysterious figure; I can't guess!"

Her tone dripped with sarcasm.

Alex reached out, grabbed her chin, and forcibly turned her face towards him. His long, well-defined fingers lightly brushed her pale cheek as if scrutinizing a product for flaws. Finally, he coldly remarked, "You've lost weight."

Katherine paused and replied, "Mr. Melville has a good memory to notice that!"

Not only could he see it, he could feel it too. He remembered every inch of her body. When he had held her at Moonlight Manor earlier, her waist had felt even slimmer than before, all bones.

She had been out enjoying herself for a month, and he had assumed she would be living it up without him. But she had ended up looking so frail.

Katherine disliked his intrusive touch and attempted to pull away but found herself trapped by his large hand. She frowned and expressed her displeasure. "Mr. Melville, please let go. Men and women should maintain proper boundaries!"

Alex snorted coldly, "Proper boundaries? Ms. Galatea seems to have forgotten our most intimate moments."
