Chapter 459 No Need to Be Polite

"Someone's got way more qualifications and skills than you! No way you're getting your job back!"

Katherine ignored Lisa, not even looking her way. She just raised her hand and cleaned her ear with her pinky, like she was tuning out some annoying noise.

Lisa lost it. She grabbed Katherine, yelling, "Hey! I've been talking to you forever. Are you deaf? No response at all! Got any manners, bitch?"

The elevator door opened.

Bernard, about to step in, saw the scene and his face darkened.

Knowing his sister was downstairs, Bernard had been anxiously waiting. He couldn't wait for Billy to bring Katherine up, worried she might leave. Just as he was about to go down himself, he saw this.

"What are you doing?" Bernard's voice was dangerously low.

Lisa froze. She turned and saw her boss, feeling embarrassed. She quickly explained, "Mr. Mitchell, remember her? You fired her before, and now she's back for some reason! I asked her, but she stayed silent. I suspected she might be here to steal trade secrets, so I..."

"Let go of her." Bernard's voice was icy, cutting her off.

Lisa, scared by his tone, quickly let go.

Bernard stepped into the elevator, walked up to Katherine, and gently took her hand to inspect it.

Seeing her wrist red from Lisa's grip, Bernard's eyes darkened. He asked coldly, "Which department are you from?"

Lisa, confused and disappointed, stammered, "Uh... Mr. Mitchell, I was your secretary, then moved to marketing. Don't you remember me?"

"Pack your things and leave the Mitchell Group," Bernard said coldly.

Lisa was stunned, "Mr. Mitchell? I..."

"Get out!" Bernard snapped, losing patience.

He turned to Katherine, his tone softening, "Why did it take you so long to come up? Have you had lunch yet?"

Katherine pulled her hand away, shaking it off. "Not yet. I came up to have lunch."

Bernard, unfazed, still spoke gently, "I know you wouldn't come up to see me. Let's go. I'll take you to lunch."

Katherine frowned but knew she couldn't shake him off here, so she followed him.

Lisa stood there, dumbfounded.

She thought, 'Bernard fired me? Just because I grabbed Katherine? But didn't he dislike her before? Didn't he fire her himself? What's going on?'

Bernard's tone towards Katherine today was so humble, like he was afraid of upsetting her!

While Lisa was still reeling, Scarlett walked up, her face dark and eyes narrowed. She glared in the direction Bernard and Katherine had gone, suspicion and resentment clear in her eyes.

Seeing Scarlett, Lisa grabbed her arm like a lifeline. "Ms. Mitchell, you're just in time! Mr. Mitchell fired me for no reason. You have to help me!"

Scarlett shook her off in disgust. "Get lost! Who do you think you are to ask me for help?"

Lisa was stunned. "Ms. Mitchell? You... didn't you say you had high hopes for me? You wanted me to keep an eye on Katherine for you. You even said..."

Scarlett, annoyed, pushed her hard. "You believed that? Look at yourself! Overestimating your worth!"

Lisa fell to the ground, completely shocked and devastated. Fired by Bernard and abandoned by Scarlett!

How could this be? Scarlett had always seemed so kind and gentle, not this cold and cruel.

The bustling Mitchell Group cafeteria fell silent when Bernard arrived; only the sound of eating remained.

Bernard picked out all the carrots from the salad and pushed it in front of Katherine. "Alright, Katherine, eat up, have more."

Katherine frowned at the plate and looked up at Bernard. "Mr. Mitchell, I love carrots. Why'd you pick out my favorite food?"

Bernard paused. "You love carrots? I remember you hated them as a kid."

Katherine's eyes were cold. "People change. I don't remember my childhood tastes. And please, don't make decisions for me. I don't like it."

Bernard sighed. "Alright, I won't say anymore. You love carrots now. I'll get you some more."

He started to get up, but Katherine stopped him. "No need, don't waste food."

She pulled the plate with the picked-out carrots in front of her and started eating.

Bernard, half-standing, sat back down helplessly, watching her eat the carrots, his heart aching.

If given a choice, no one would eat food they once hated.

Laura hated carrots as a child, but now she liked them. It must be because of the circumstances back then.

If she didn't eat carrots, there was no other food.

Katherine was sent to countryside relatives who disliked her and sent her to a church. There, she had a period of peace, but the food was not optional.

In the church, they ate whatever was cheap. Carrots were considered relatively good food.

Bernard frowned, his eyes reddening, feeling heartbroken. He stood up again. "Katherine, don't eat that. You don't have to worry about wasting food now. I'll get you some more."

Katherine, serious as ever, stopped him. "No need. Mr. Mitchell, don't be so polite, I'll just eat this."

Katherine's "Mr. Mitchell" and "Don't be so polite" made Bernard feel both heartbroken and helpless.
