Chapter 425 It's Already Too Late
"Who's wasting the doctor's time?" Katherine snapped, grabbing Scarlett by the collar and shoving her toward Alice. "If you weren't babbling, I'd be done talking to the doctor!"
Scarlett stumbled into Alice, fuming.
By the time she steadied herself and tried to stop Katherine, it was too late.
Katherine said, "Besides the three meals, he drank something none of us had."
The doctor perked up. "What was it?"
"Pomegranate juice, freshly squeezed by his mom. He drank a big glass. There are some juice residues on this napkin. The hospital should test it for harmful substances." Katherine handed over the napkin she had used at the Mitchell family table, which had the pomegranate juice she pretended to drink and then spit out.
The doctor took it and nodded. "We'll test it now."
Katherine nodded back. "Thanks!"
The doctor went back to the emergency room to arrange the test.
Seeing Katherine hand over the sample, Alice and Scarlett's faces darkened.
Alice had already ordered her servant to destroy all the remaining pomegranate juice. Who would've thought Katherine would spit some onto a napkin and bring it to the hospital? Damn it!
What now? Once the hospital tested it, she couldn't explain it away.
Bernard squinted, recalling how Alice had pushed Katherine to drink the juice at dinner. His brows furrowed. "Alice, that pomegranate juice better be clean! If Sunny has any issues, this won't end well!"
Alice felt even guiltier but couldn't show it. She put on a hurt face. "Bernard! Outsiders suspecting me is one thing, but you? We're family! Sunny is my son; why would I harm him?"
Bernard glared at his stepmother. "Who was the juice originally for? Do I need to spell it out? When Sunny wanted it, you hesitated but had no reason to refuse. I saw everything!"
Alex's brow furrowed. Bernard's suspicion made him uneasy. He hugged Katherine tightly.
Thank goodness Katherine was cautious and spit out the juice.
He shouldn't have let her go to the Mitchell family alone!
Bernard's harsh words left Alice speechless.
Scarlett, thinking quickly, stepped forward with teary eyes to defend her mom. "Bernard, how can you say that about Mom? She was just being kind, making fresh juice for our guest. If it was poisoned, why would she let Sunny drink it?"
"Would Mom harm her child? Bernard, remember, I drank a glass of that pomegranate juice too. If it was poisoned, why am I fine? Even if there was an issue, it was probably an accidental food interaction, not intentional!"
Scarlett's argument made sense. She used the fact that she also drank the juice to back her claim, making it tough for Bernard to find flaws and reducing his suspicion of Alice.
Katherine chuckled. "Scarlett, did you forget? You ran to the bathroom and threw up right after drinking that juice."
Scarlett's eyes flickered and her brow furrowed as she suppressed her annoyance, giving Katherine a wronged look. "Katherine, are you trying to cause trouble? When did I throw up the juice? Do you have any evidence? I just went to the bathroom. Why are you framing my mom, who kindly made juice for you?"
Katherine watched Scarlett's counterattack, almost wanting to applaud her quick thinking.
Edwin, who had been silent, coughed seriously. "Alright, stop arguing at the emergency room door! We'll know the truth once the test results are out."
The elder's words carried weight, and everyone quieted down.
Scarlett exchanged a glance with her mother, Alice, both thinking about their next move.
Katherine wasn't rushing to place blame. If they were guilty, they wouldn't escape.
Worried about Katherine's pregnancy, Alex gently guided her to a nearby chair, pressing her shoulder to sit down.
Scarlett saw this and felt a surge of jealousy.
Unable to bear seeing Alex treat Katherine so gently, Scarlett walked over, her voice trembling with tears. "Alex, I know you like Katherine and are on her side! But you can't let her falsely accuse my mom just because you like her. Even if I once saved your life, you can't let my family be wronged."
Alex glanced at her, moved by the memory of her saving him. After a moment of silence, he said, "I haven't expressed my opinion yet. Whether your mother is wronged will be clear once the test results are out."
Katherine said nothing, quietly watching Scarlett's performance. She was good at using the life-saving favor to morally bind men.
The irony was that the life-saving favor was fake! She had taken credit for someone else's deed and was so self-righteous about it!
"Alex..." Scarlett reached out to tug at Alex's sleeve, as she always did when she didn't dare hold his hand, seeking his attention.
But this time, she didn't succeed because Katherine intercepted her midway!
Katherine grabbed Scarlett's wrist like a cop catching a thief, smirking as she questioned, "Scarlett, are you trying to harass my husband in public?"
Scarlett's face turned ugly, and she tried to pull her hand back but couldn't. "Katherine, what are you doing? Ah! It hurts... Alex, help me. Katherine is hurting me."
