Chapter 156 Mutual Understanding
Bernard nodded gracefully and said, "Then I'll have to trouble you, officers. Please take me in to confront the suspect, Katherine."
After a brief exchange, the officers led the new witness, Bernard, into Katherine's hospital room.
Alex's expression remained unchanged as he turned to follow them inside.
However, the officer guarding the door reluctantly raised his arm to stop Alex, saying, "Mr. Melville, I'm sorry, but we're still investigating. Since you're not involved in this case, it's better if you wait outside."
Alex raised an eyebrow coldly. "Then why can he go in?"
The officer, understanding that Mr. Melville was referring to Bernard, explained, "Because Mr. Mitchell is involved in this case. He's going in as a witness to confront the suspect."
Alex narrowed his eyes and said, "Who told you I'm not involved in this case?"
The officer looked surprised and then asked, "Mr. Melville, what is your connection to this case?"
"I'm the one who reported the case. I have the right to know what's going on and to see how they confront each other." Alex's tone was calm but carried a significant amount of pressure.
That was right. He was the one who reported the case.
Yesterday, after Alex arrived at the scene, he instructed Leander to call the police, and naturally, Leander did so in Alex's name.
The officer had no rebuttal. After hesitating for a moment, he reluctantly lowered his arm and allowed Alex to enter.
Seeing Alex go in, Scarlett also wanted to follow.
The officer raised his arm again to stop her, speaking to the young girl in a slightly gentler tone, "Scarlett, you can't go in right now."
"Sir, I'm the victim in this case. I have the right to know, and I want to find Bernard. I'll be scared if Bernard isn't with me." Scarlett's delicate appearance, with her forehead wrapped in bandages and a look of unease, made her seem even more pitiable and heart-wrenching.
The officer's heart softened at the sight. After thinking it over, he sighed helplessly and lowered his arm, allowing Scarlett to enter as well.
Seeing everyone else go in, Sophie and Sunny also wanted to follow.
The officer's tone became stern. "You two shouldn't go in and get involved!"
Sunny frowned in defiance. "They all went in. Why can't I?"
"Who are you? And who are they?" The officer hadn't seen Sunny before and couldn't confirm his identity. He even suspected Sunny was there to cause trouble, so there was no way he would let him in.
Sophie, being more adaptable, quickly pulled Sunny aside to stop him from speaking.
Then, Sophie stepped forward with a gentle smile and said, "Sir, the kid is short-tempered. Please don't take it personally! We are Scarlett's family. Scarlett was hospitalized due to a car accident, and after what happened yesterday, she's been severely traumatized both physically and mentally. She's very unstable right now. It's time for her medication. She went in without taking it, and we need to bring it to her. Otherwise, given her condition, she might collapse soon! So, please, let us in to give her the medication. We'll come right out after that!"
The officer frowned, recalling Scarlett's frail appearance, which indeed suggested she wasn't in good health.
He was really in a tough spot!
Each person had a legitimate reason to go in. If he had known, he wouldn't have let anyone in from the start.
Letting one in but not the other was hard to justify.
The officer finally waved his hand in frustration. "Alright, alright, all of you go in! Just keep quiet and don't disturb our colleagues' work!"
Sophie quickly pulled Sunny along to thank the officer, and they successfully went inside.
The officer rubbed his forehead, feeling exhausted!
Fortunately, the formal interrogation process was already completed, so it didn't need to be as strict as before. He decided to let them all in.
Since Mr. Mitchell was the victim's brother, his reliability as a witness was still uncertain. Their leader's idea was to let Mr. Mitchell in first to see how he confronted the suspect. If Bernard indeed proved helpful to the case, they would then take him to the police station for a formal evidence-gathering process.
As everyone entered, Katherine was reaching for the water cup on her bedside table.
After talking so much with the officers, she was thirsty and wanted a drink.
However, her hands, still wrapped in bandages and not fully healed, were not very nimble, and the slippery porcelain cup was hard to grasp.
The bandages offered little friction, making it difficult to pick up the cup. Just as she managed to lift it slightly, it would slip back down!
As she struggled, a large, rough hand with distinct knuckles reached over, picked up the cup, and brought it to her lips.
She looked up and saw Alex looking down at her.
The cup had a straw, so she could drink by just opening her mouth.
But Katherine didn't accept Alex's gesture of feeding her water because she felt it was inappropriate.
She stubbornly insisted on using her own inconvenient hands to take the cup. One hand supported the bottom, and the other held the side, bringing the cup to her own hands. Only then did Katherine open her mouth to sip from the straw, moistening her throat.
She didn't forget to say, "Thank you" for Alex's kind gesture.
Katherine's stubborn yet polite demeanor made Alex's brow furrow slightly. He was displeased but said nothing.
The rough hand that handed her the cup then gently patted her head, not too hard or too soft, like a parent soothing a baby with a mix of sternness and tenderness, carrying a powerful, calming magic.
Katherine quietly drank her water. After being patted on the head, she looked up at Alex, paused, and then gave him a faint smile.
He also slightly curled his lips in response.
That kind of unspoken mutual understanding, where words were unnecessary to comprehend the other's thoughts, was very delicate.
At this moment, Scarlett stood beside Bernard, staring blankly at the silent exchange between Alex and Katherine. Her beautiful eyes filled with a layer of disappointment as she turned away and leaned into Bernard's embrace.
Bernard's eyes darkened as he hugged his sister, gently patting her back to comfort her. Then, he also looked up at Alex and Katherine, a hint of malice flashing in his eyes.
Bernard knew that Scarlett was perfect in every way, except that whenever she got involved with Alex, she became easily hurt.
Almost every time Scarlett was sad or upset, it was because of Alex.
And that heartless man, Alex, was now flirting with Katherine right in front of Scarlett. Was he trying to break Scarlett's heart?
Bernard couldn't stand to see his sister suffer. With a cold laugh, he interrupted the warm gaze between Alex and Katherine, "Ms. Galatea, we meet again."
