Chapter 980 You Are Quiet
"It was nothing," The boy said, then turned to leave.
Christina quickly called out to him, "Hey, what's your name? I need to pay you back for this pack of stuff."
"Ruben, but you don't need to pay me back, it wasn't expensive." Ruben left with a bright smile, walking away from Christina.
Christina looked down at the tampons in her hand, feeling warm inside, and silently repeated the boy's name, 'Ruben.'
The boy in her memory had grown into a handsome and elegant man, holding a drink as he walked towards Christina, "Here, have some juice."
Just like years ago, Ruben placed a drink in front of Christina and said, "I didn't know what you liked, so I just grabbed one."
"Thank you." Eighteen-year-old Christina and the current Christina said the same thing, but it seemed like everything had changed.
Sometimes she wondered, if she had been braver back then, maybe she and Ruben wouldn't have ended up like this.
But unfortunately, it was too late for that.
"You still haven't told me, what's your relationship with the host of this party?" Ruben asked as he sat down again.
Christina snapped out of her memories, still unsure how to answer his question.
She didn't want Ruben to know about her current 'married' status, selfishly wanting to preserve the good image he had of her.
"Why are you still so quiet?"
A hand gently patted her forehead, and Christina looked at Ruben, her cheeks turning red.
"I remember you were quiet in high school too." Ruben said elegantly, holding a wine glass, "You were always bullied back then, but you never said anything, as if those things had nothing to do with you."
Thinking about high school, Christina gave a helpless smile, "It's not that I didn't like to talk, I just knew it wouldn't help, so I might as well save my breath."
"Christina, sometimes saying things out loud can be very useful." Ruben looked at her deeply.
Christina turned her head to avoid his gaze, "Ruben, what have you been up to all these years? Have you been well?"
"Pretty good. I graduated from college smoothly and then did three more years of graduate school. After graduation, I went to work at my family's company, but my mom is always nagging me now, constantly pushing me to go on blind dates."
Ruben said, looking very troubled, "You have no idea, my mom's temper is such that whenever I'm in front of her, she always talks about this topic and won't stop until she gets what she wants."
Following his words, Christina thought of Ruben's mom.
In high school, she had seen Ruben's mom from a distance once. She seemed like a strong, successful woman.
Back then, Ruben was also standing next to his mom, listening to her lecture.
Thinking of this, Christina forced a dry laugh, "Ruben, your mom just wants what's best for you. Parents always hope their kids will settle down early."
"Yeah, she's doing it for my own good." Ruben sighed, his gaze becoming deeper.
Talking about the past, the two of them had a great conversation.
Christina didn't notice that not far away, a pair of eyes were watching them.
Bernard had originally planned to wait for Christina at the door, but he ran into a friend and went upstairs to the VIP room to chat for a while.
When he planned to come downstairs to find Christina, he saw the well-dressed Christina sitting on the sofa with Ruben, having a great conversation and smiling brightly.
Christina's smile made Bernard narrow his eyes. Christina had never smiled like that in front of him.
"Mr. Mitchell, about that piece of land we were discussing..."
A middle-aged man beside him carefully handed over a wine glass, afraid of offending him and losing the chance to cooperate with the Mitchell Group.
Bernard didn't give him any face, pushing the wine glass aside and stepping downstairs, "Talk to Billy about work, he'll pass your proposal to me."
With that, Bernard didn't look at him again and went downstairs.
The middle-aged man looked helpless and didn't dare to follow him.
Bernard walked straight towards Christina, wanting to see what they were so happily talking about.
"When did you get here?"
Hearing the familiar voice, Christina's smile froze.
She turned her head and, sure enough, saw Bernard with a serious face.
Just by looking at his expression, Christina could tell he was in a bad mood.
Thinking of Ruben sitting next to her, Christina felt a sense of dread.
Bernard had already warned her to be mindful of her behavior during their collaboration, and now she was chatting happily with another man in public, surely making Bernard unhappy again.
Christina sighed and quickly stood up to answer, "I just got here not long ago..."
Before Christina could finish, Ruben stood up first, "Bernard, didn't expect you to be here too. Christina, this is my cousin."
Christina was surprised.
She didn't expect Ruben to be Bernard's cousin. The world was indeed small.
She could only hope that Bernard wouldn't talk to her now, as she didn't want Ruben to know about her 'married' relationship with Bernard.
"I just returned a few days ago and have been busy, so I haven't had time to visit the elders. How are they doing?" Ruben naturally started talking about family matters.
Bernard's gaze remained on Christina, not interested in Ruben's words, only giving a faint response.
"And you? When did you get here?" Bernard squinted at her.
With one sentence, Bernard shattered Christina's hope.
Ruben looked at her in confusion, "Christina, you know Bernard?"
"Yes, I do." Christina gave an awkward smile, feeling very embarrassed.
Bernard was displeased that Christina stood by Ruben's side instead of his.
Clearly, Christina was his fiancée, yet she was always with Ruben.
"Christina, come here." Christina hadn't finished dealing with Ruben when Bernard spoke again.
She was caught in a dilemma, looking at the two men, and finally walked towards Bernard helplessly, "Mr. Mitchell, what do you need?"
"Billy sent you here for what? Do you still remember?" Bernard's eyes were cold.
Christina gave an embarrassed laugh, "He told me to find you."
"In that case," Bernard paused slightly, bending down towards her, "why didn't you come to find me when you arrived at the party?"
Christina now understood why he was in such a bad mood. He was upset that she didn't come to find him first.
