Chapter 209 Yes, Alex and I Have a Child
Katherine harbors a disdain towards Scarlett, showing no interest in engaging in conversation with her. However, noticing Scarlett's demeanor, Katherine sensed she had something on her mind. Thus, Katherine decides to hear her out, a preferable alternative to Scarlett's potential duplicity.
Pulling her arm back, Katherine smoothens her sleeve, nods at Scarlett, and lightly tugs at the corner of her lips. "Alright, let's talk then."
Scarlett's expression stiffens as Katherine pulls her arm away, clearly indicating a rejection of physical contact. Scarlett blinks her doe-like eyes, appearing innocent, vulnerable, and pitifully unaware of any wrongdoing.
Seated in the pavilion, Scarlett was the first to speak, "Katherine, I can tell that Alex truly likes you and treats you well."
Before chatting with her, Katherine brought along two skewers of cooked meat to keep the conversation interesting. While eating, she responded, "Is that so?"
With a hint of bitterness in her smile, Scarlett continued, "Yes, with how good Alex is to you, you must be feeling quite happy, right?"
After a moment of thought, Katherine responds candidly, "It's acceptable."
Scarlett, with a bitter smile, sighed. "In the past, when I was with Alex, I felt happy every day as well. Unfortunately, men are fickle. Once they have someone new, they forget about the old."
Katherine paused mid-bite, grilled meat suspended before her mouth, turning to Scarlett with a furrowed brow. "When were you two together?"
Startled, Scarlett hurriedly covered her mouth with her hand, as if realizing she had misspoken. "Did Alex not tell you? Uh... Katherine, I'm sorry. I seem to have said too much. Please forget what you heard, don't dwell on it, please!"
Katherine smiled and nodded."Okay."
After that, Katherine focused solely on eating her skewer and refrained from further inquiry.
Scarlett, taken aback by Katherine's indifferent reaction, had expected the curiosity typical of most girls upon learning about their boyfriend's past relationships.
She then asked, "Katherine, aren't you curious about Alex's past with me?"
"I am curious!" Katherine replied naturally, her tone candid and nonchalant. "But if I am, I will ask him myself. I won't trouble you to tell me."
Scarlett's somewhat sympathetic gaze took Katherine aback. "Katherine, are you really this naive? Have you ever thought that if Alex hasn't taken the initiative to tell you about our past, do you think he would tell you the truth if you asked him now?"
"I believe he would," she replied without hesitation, her expression devoid of any doubt.
Scarlett paused, furrowing her brow, seemingly shocked by Katherine's trust in Alex.
After a moment of silence, she smiled, "Katherine, you seem to have a very limited understanding of men. In reality, all men are the same - they love novelty and easily grow tired of the old. How could he possibly admit to the beautiful moments he shared with his past when he's focused on pleasing someone new?"
Katherine raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Miss Scarlett, so in your eyes, the man you love the most, Alex, is just as fickle as those unreliable douchebags? Yet you still adore him?"
Taken aback by Katherine's response, Scarlett was momentarily speechless before responding, "Katherine, since you are so candid, let me be honest with you. It's not just like for me, I love him! Regardless of Alex's nature, I love him! Besides, in my experience, all men are the same. Do you really believe some men remain constant?"
Katherine narrowed her eyes, "Miss Scarlett, by saying that, you not only discredit Alex but also your father and brothers. Aren't they men as well? Do you view your father and brothers as equally inconsistent and unreliable?"
Expecting Katherine's response, Scarlett continued. "I'm not discrediting them. I've witnessed too many fickle men, including my father and brothers. None of them are consistent. My father had a previous wife, and even my virtuous brother occasionally entertains different women. I hope you can see the reality - all men are the same. Once the novelty wears off, they will grow tired, no matter how beautiful or talented the woman is!"
Katherine finally understood and then asked, "Scarlett, are you trying to warn me? Are you suggesting that Alex will grow tired of me too, so I should be prepared or gracefully leave him before it's too late?"
Scarlett nodded earnestly. "Katherine, now you understand."
Katherine chuckled, "I don't understand. If I leave, Scarlett, will you then return to Alex? Aren't you afraid he might grow tired of you as well?"
At this point, Scarlett's face took on a proud and haughty expression, tinged with condescension. "Katherine, I am different from you."
"Oh? How so?" Katherine inquired.
"I have a family background equal to Alex's: parents who love and protect me, a brother who will support me no matter what. But what about you? Your family can't provide you with dignity, can they?"
Katherine grasped the point and asked, "So, you went to the Galatea family and informed them about my marriage to the Melville family?"
Scarlett didn't evade the accusation. "Yes, it was me!"
Katherine remained calm. "So, you think by instigating the Galatea family to cause trouble for me, you can eliminate me from Alex's side?"
Scarlett dropped her innocent facade, revealing her self-proclaimed noble stance. "I know it's not that simple! Katherine, I just want you to understand your situation. You are marrying into a wealthy family without roots or foundation, lacking any backing. Over time, you will only face disdain."
She continued, "As for me, none of the Melville family would dare to look down on me because of my influential family. Even if something goes wrong one day, and Alex and I drift apart, I can handle the consequences. My fallback is my family, and they will always have my back. Do you understand? That's my confidence!"
"Do you consider relying on your family's protection as your backing?" Katherine smiled wryly.
"Isn't it?" Scarlett replied.
Katherine smiled. "I admit that can be a form of support, something I lack. However, I rely on myself. I don't depend on anyone for lifelong protection. Being self-sufficient means I won't fall into a passive position."
She added, "I stay in the Melville family simply because I have a slight fondness for Alex as a person. His family, status, wealth - I don't care about it at all. If the day comes when he truly grows tired of me, or I tire of him first, I can leave gracefully on my own without any consequences I can't bear. Miss Scarlett, I'd advise you to save your efforts and not entertain these twisted ideas. Otherwise, your perfect facade might crumble, and no one will be left to dote on you unconditionally!"
With that, Katherine stood up, ready to check if the chicken wings were done.
"Wait, Katherine, let me show you something!" Scarlett persisted, stepping in front of her.
Katherine, somewhat impatient, asked, "What is it?"
She gently lifted her shirt, revealing a scar on her abdomen. "Have you seen this scar?"
On her slender, fair belly, there was a prominent horizontal scar.
Katherine squinted. "Is this... from appendicitis?"
Scarlett was nearly exasperated by her response. "This is from a cesarean section!"
Katherine paused, incredulously looking at Scarlett, who was the same age as her. "You have a child?"
She answered with a smile, ''Yup, I had a child with Alex.''
Katherine asked in confusion, "What?"
