Chapter 294 Grandparents' Birthday
Katherine went quiet. She had definitely overestimated this kid's smarts.
The elevator hit the first floor, and the doors slid open. Katherine reached out to press the button again, ready to head back up alone. She said to Sunny, "Sunny, if you don't want to go back to Mr. Mitchell, you can get off here."
Sunny was about to step out but decided not to go alone; he pulled her along with him. Katherine was dragged out and frowned in displeasure. "Can you not mess with my work?"
Sunny shrugged. "Didn't you just say you finished all your work? What's the rush?"
Katherine rolled her eyes. "Do you think we're the same? You're Bernard's brother, and I'm just an employee. If I leave without permission, I'll get my pay docked, got it?"
Sunny's temper flared. "How much will they dock? I'll pay you double! Anyway, you're not going back now. Come hang out with me for a bit!"
With that, Sunny grabbed Katherine's arm and pulled her out of the Mitchell Group building. Katherine was speechless.
They hopped into a taxi and headed straight to a well-known antique shop downtown. When they arrived, Katherine looked at the array of antiques and glanced at Sunny, surprised.
"Didn't think a young guy like you would be into this old stuff," she said.
Sunny was busy checking out the antiques. "It's not for me. I need a birthday gift for my grandpa."
Katherine raised an eyebrow. "If it's for your grandpa, why drag me along?"
Sunny, shamelessly, said, "Because I don't have any money, so I brought you to cover for me!"
Katherine's gaze turned icy. "Seriously? I work for your family to earn a living, and now you want me to pay for your things?"
Sunny sighed. "I have no choice. Bernard froze all my cards, and he won't even let Scarlett give me any money! But tomorrow's my grandpa's birthday, and the whole family's celebrating. My grandparents have always been good to me, and I don't want to show up empty-handed. Katherine, just cover for me this time, and I promise I'll pay you back!"
Katherine picked up a small rosewood-carved horse from the shelf and asked thoughtfully, "Your grandparents... are they your mom's parents?"
Sunny's expression turned complicated, and he shook his head. "Technically, they're not my grandparents; they're my brother's. They have no blood relation to me and Scarlett. As you know, my sister and I are actually half-siblings with Bernard, and our biological mom's parents passed away years ago."
Katherine frowned. Bernard's biological grandparents, meaning his mom's parents. She had heard rumors that Bernard's mom was wronged and kicked out of the Mitchell family. Normally, in such a situation, her family should hold a grudge against the Mitchells. How could they still get along so well, and why would the Mitchell family even celebrate together?
Perhaps Bernard's mom was also neglected by her own family?
Katherine couldn't figure it out.
Sunny picked up the antique walnuts and said, "Even though they're not my blood relatives, they've been really good to me over the years. They just don't treat my sister well."
Katherine was still lost in thought. Sunny, thinking she was worried about the money, promised. "Don't worry, I'll pay you back! Bernard said once I pass all my exams, he'll restore my card limits."
Katherine snapped out of it and laughed. "You might as well say you won't pay me back!"
Sunny frowned. "Katherine, don't underestimate me. I'll pass my exams eventually!"
Katherine didn't care about his grades. After a moment, she said, "I'll cover the cost of the gift, and you don't have to pay me back, but you have to promise me one thing."
Sunny looked curious. "What do you want me to promise?"
Katherine said, "Take me to your grandparents' party tomorrow!"
Sunny was stunned. "Why do you want to go to my grandparents' party?"
Katherine answered, "Curiosity! Boredom. I want to attend a party and have some fun. Deal?"
Sunny thought for a moment. "Alright! Deal, I'll take you!"
They quickly reached an agreement, and Katherine paid for the antique walnut, which costover a thousand dollars.
As they walked out of the shop, a black Mercedes-Benz van pulled up. The car was a limited edition, clearly a status symbol.
The moment Katherine saw the car, her heart sank. What a small world!
The driver got out and respectfully opened the rear door. Alex stepped out, tall and handsome, exuding an extraordinary aura.
"Alex!" Sunny was pleasantly surprised.
Alex glanced at Sunny and responded indifferently. Then, his deep, emotionless gaze fell on Katherine.
"What are you two doing here?" he asked.
Sunny answered, "Alex, I'm here to buy a birthday gift for my grandpa. Katherine is working at Bernard's company now. I saw she had nothing to do, so I brought her along!"
Katherine fell silent. Who had nothing to do? Sunny made it sound so easy!
Alex's inscrutable gaze lingered on Katherine, seemingly with a hint of displeasure. Then, in a cold tone, he asked Sunny, "How did you get here?"
Sunny said, "We took a taxi!"
Alex narrowed his eyes. "Wait for me. I'll give you two a ride."
Sunny was delighted not to have to pay for a taxi. "Sure! Alex, what are you here for? Are you buying something too?"
"Yeah." Alex didn't say much, hands in his pockets, and strode into the antique shop.
Sunny was about to follow him in but then remembered something. He turned to Katherine and saw her looking a bit dizzy. He waved his hand in front of her eyes. "Hey, are you there?"
