Chapter 262 Look at Your Cards!

Katherine's well-laid plan hit a snag. Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself and prepared to play her card.

Unexpectedly, Alex reached over with his strong hand, pressed down on the card she had just drawn, and selected another for her.

Katherine was stunned for a moment. She glanced at the card he had chosen and realized his move was moreunexpected and advantageous.

She turned to Alex, confused. This guy had been ignoring her earlier; why was he helping now?

Their eyes met.

His expression was stern. "What are you staring at me for? Focus on the cards!"

Katherine fell silent.

Why was he so harsh?

She had felt a bit touched and wanted to thank him.

But after that scolding, she didn't feel grateful anymore!

Katherine pouted, furrowed her brows, and turned away, looking at her cards with some irritation.

Alex's actions were unexpected, yet somehow made sense.

Hilton and Issac exchanged knowing glances and smirked but said nothing.

Jonathan squinted, casting a glance at Alex before turning to Katherine, his expression complex.

No matter how much he tried to flirt with Katherine, she stayed calm and composed, never even frowning.

But when Alex intervened, her demeanor shifted to one of irritation, which Jonathan found oddly endearing.

That was a reaction he could never get from her.

After Alex's hint, Katherine decided to follow his strategy, and things went much smoother.

Occasionally, Alex would adjust her card strategy himself, leaning in to whisper potential moves from their opponents.

Even though his tone was flat, she could always feel his cool aura and overwhelming presence.

Katherine was focused on winning, so she wasn't being sentimental. If she thought he was right, she had no reason not to listen.

After a few more rounds, Hilton saw he had no chance of winning and complained, "Alex, don't you know not to interfere in a card game?"

Alex remained unfazed, giving him a cold glance. "A gentleman wouldn't secretly pick good cards for himself while dealing either!"

Hilton had a hobby of performing magic tricks and was quite skilled with his hands.

Being exposed by his friend, Hilton laughed but wasn't ashamed. "Alex, whose side are you on? She's Bernard's secretary now, and she has nothing to do with you anymore. Why are you meddling?"

Hilton's words made Katherine uncomfortable, as it brought up the issue between her and Alex that they had been avoiding, making the atmosphere awkward.

Alex picked up the glass of water on the table and took a sip without any expression. "I don't want to meddle either, but I'm really curious to see how you, Mr. Allen, perform a striptease."

Hilton's face twisted in horror, and he pretended to protect his chest. "Alex, I thought we were brothers, and you want to."

Alex's face darkened, a look of disdain flashing in his eyes. "Get lost!"

Katherine glanced at Hilton's antics, then turned to Alex beside her, noticing that the glass he was holding was the one she had just used, the one Jonathan had poured water into for her.

Why was Alex drinking from her glass?

Wasn't he a germaphobe?

Katherine felt strange and furrowed her brows, trying not to let her mind wander, and urged the next player to continue.

Finally, Katherine placed her last card on the table, winning the game once again.

She raised an eyebrow at Hilton and said, "Mr. Allen, please! I'm looking forward to your dance!"

Hilton, usually all smiles, now had a serious expression.

Jonathan seemed eager for the spectacle. "Yes, Mr. Allen, you made the bet yourself. It wouldn't be right not to follow through."

Hilton crossed his arms and clicked his tongue. "Jonathan, are we still brothers? You're so happy to see me lose?"

Issac coldly remarked, "Who can you blame? You brought this on yourself!"

Hilton feigned a hurt expression. "Issac, even you don't sympathize with me!"

While Jonathan and Issac teased Hilton, Katherine heard Alex's deep voice in her ear, coldly mocking, "Ms. Galatea, you won this by luck."

Katherine was taken aback but didn't turn to look at him, only replying softly, "It was luck, but I still have to thank Mr. Melville for the guidance."

"How old are you? Don't you know that gambling usually leads to loss? You weren't sure you could win, yet you dared to bet?" he scoffed.

Katherine stated, "I didn't want to bet, but I didn't want to be Hilton's secretary either!"

Alex was silent for a minute, then took another sip of water, his jaw tight. "So, Ms. Galatea only wants to be Bernard's secretary?"

Katherine nodded frankly and answered, "Yes, that's right."

He said nothing more, but his grip on the cup tightened, his knuckles standing out sharply as if the porcelain cup might shatter at any moment.

Katherine felt a chilling aura around her and instinctively moved a bit away from him.

This small movement of hers was glaringly obvious to Alex.

At this moment, Issac stood up, ready to drag the reluctant Hilton to fulfill his bet, teasing, "A bet's a bet. Let's go, Mr. Allen. It's time to honor your wager!"

Jonathan smiled and proposed, "Katherine, Alex, shall we go to the ballroom to witness Hilton's performance?"

Alex didn't move immediately. Although he had just said he wanted to see Hilton's striptease, he wasn't actually interested.

But Katherine stood up. "Sure, it looks like the guests will have a great show today!"

Hilton exclaimed, "You guys are such bad friends, so interested in seeing me naked! You're all so mean!"

Katherine pursed her lips.; Hilton still had the nerve to joke at a moment like this?!

In the ballroom, Issac promptly ushered Hilton to the center of the dance floor.

The couples waltzing paused as they noticed Mr. Melville, Mr. Sanchez, and Mr. Mostow standing at the edge, their attention fixed on Mr. Allen in the center. A hush fell over the room.

Hilton's usually charming face still had a smile, but it looked more like a grimace.
