Chapter 312 Mr. Ayers Is Not Easy to Fool
Marcus didn't hold back, his face stern as he snorted, "She hurt her foot, not her voice! Just have her sing a line or two to prove her skills. It won't tire her out!"
Sophie's eyes flickered. "But..."
"Enough!" Marcus snapped, ignoring Sophie and casting a cold glance at Scarlett, then at Katherine. "Who's going first?"
Scarlett knew there was no backing down now. Forcing a calm smile, she said, "Well, it doesn't really matter who goes first! Katherine, who do you think should sing first?"
Katherine looked at Scarlett, who was clearly smiling sweetly but with a guilty and threatening look in her innocent, big eyes, warning her to back off and not ruin the good impression she had just made in front of the elder.
Katherine found it quite amusing. Her image was about to collapse, and she was still trying to intimidate her. Guess if she would be scared?
The guests around started whispering.
"Whose daughter is she? How dare she steal Ms. Mitchell's spotlight here?"
"No idea. I've never seen her before!"
"She said she sang that part from 'The Phantom of the Opera.' Could that be true?"
"I don't think so! Ms. Mitchell has been talented since she was young. It's not surprising she can sing opera so well!"
"Yeah! That part from 'The Phantom of the Opera' was definitely something Ms. Mitchell practiced specifically for Mr. Ayers' birthday banquet! As for that unknown girl, who knows whose daughter she is, probably trying to take credit and get close to Mr. Ayers!"
"These girls nowadays don't even use their brains when scheming! Marcus isn't easily fooled, and now he's making her prove it! Bet she's stunned!"
"Let's listen and find out!"
Amid the chatter, Katherine calmly spoke, "Then I'll go first!"
She certainly wouldn't let Scarlett have her way, not for anything else but because Scarlett shamelessly pretended to be Claire in front of Aria!
Claire was Katherine's beloved mother's nickname!
And a woman as evil and vile as Scarlett didn't deserve to be associated with her gentle and kind mother. It was blasphemy!
Seeing Katherine really agree to sing, Scarlett's face instantly turned sour, her eyes barely hiding the malice as she bit her lip.
Katherine nonchalantly cleared her throat and sang a line with a clear and pure voice.
It was a challenging line, just as beautiful as the one sung on stage earlier!
The onlookers' eyes changed immediately upon hearing Katherine.
Marcus also had a clear idea in his mind, looking at Katherine with admiration, his doubts dissipating, but he still coldly looked at Scarlett.
"Ms. Galatea has finished singing. Now it's your turn!"
Scarlett laughed awkwardly, forced to start singing, but just as she was about to, she pretended her throat was uncomfortable and stopped to make an excuse. "Mr. Ayers, I might have strained my voice on stage earlier, and now my throat feels a bit dry and hoarse. I might not be able to sing."
Marcus wasn't buying it. "Someone, get her a glass of water to soothe her throat!"
Scarlett was speechless.
After drinking the water, she had no more excuses and had to start singing.
She had practiced for months; her voice shouldn't be much worse than Katherine's.
Singing the same line as Katherine, she ended up cracking her voice at the end, causing a burst of snickers from the crowd!
Scarlett's face showed unprecedented embarrassment and awkwardness. "Sorry! Mr. Ayers, my throat really went hoarse. That's why it didn't sound like the same person."
"Really? A hoarse throat?" Marcus interrupted her mercilessly, sarcastically saying, "Your voice sounded fine when you were impersonating 'The Phantom' earlier! Do you think I'm senile and can't tell that your voice and the one from earlier aren't the same person?"
Scarlett's eyes reddened, looking aggrieved and about to cry. "No, Grandpa. I really strained my voice, that's why it didn't sound like the same person. I'm not lying! It really was me."
Marcus frowned deeply, his face darkening. "At this point, you still have the nerve not to admit your mistake! I really despise schemers. You can leave now and go back to the Mitchell family! From now on, don't call me Grandpa, and you're not allowed to step into the Ayers family again, let alone claim any relation to us. I don't have a granddaughter like you!"
Scarlett didn't expect the consequences to be so severe and started crying. "Grandpa. I was wrong. I admit my mistake. I really wanted to sing for you myself, but because I sprained my foot, I had Katherine sing for me. But this performance was my carefully prepared birthday gift for you."
Sophie quickly chimed in, "Yes! Mr. Ayers, Scarlett really prepared this gift for you, but Katherine injured her foot."
"Enough! Do you two still want to fool me? Do you really think I'm too old to tell right from wrong?" Marcus interrupted them harshly, his face angry.
Scarlett, tearful and pitiful, wanted to argue but didn't dare, her voice weakening. "Grandpa..."
Marcus ignored her.
Seeing Marcus no longer deceived by them, Katherine slightly curled her lips and left feeling at peace.
The reason she exposed Scarlett wasn't to steal the spotlight or take credit; such things meant nothing to her!
She just didn't want to see Marcus and Aria being deceived and used by Scarlett, so she stepped in.
Now that the matter was resolved, she could leave in peace.
"Wait, Katherine, don't go yet!"
Marcus's steady voice came from behind again.
Katherine stopped, turned around, tilted her head, and politely asked, "Mr. Ayers, anything else I can do for you?"
Marcus looked at her with satisfaction and depth, his authoritative tone softening. "Come to the study with me. I have something to discuss with you."
Katherine raised an eyebrow in confusion, thought for a moment, and then nodded. "Alright."
She didn't want to acknowledge her relatives for now to avoid complications, but she couldn't bear to refuse her elderly grandfather's request, so she went to hear what he had to say.
