Chapter 339 Misunderstanding
Seeing her confused look, Alex squinted and snorted. "Still don't get what you misunderstood?"
Katherine snapped back. "What did I misunderstand about you?"
Alex didn't say a word. He just grabbed a file from the seatback pocket and handed it to her.
What's this?
Katherine raised an eyebrow and took the folder. Inside was a document in a foreign language that looked like tadpoles.
She understood it. The title read "Adoption Agreement," and the fine print was all about adoption terms.
In the top left corner was a photo of a boy—the same kid Scarlett had been carrying around.
Adopted?
Katherine frowned and looked at Alex skeptically. "If he's just adopted, why did I hear him call you 'Dad'?"
Alex propped his head with one hand. "Charles was adopted from abroad, he's young, can't speak properly, and doesn't understand English. So when he arrived, he could only say 'Dad' and 'Mom' to everyone."
Katherine went silent.
So, Alex and Scarlett didn't have a kid together?
Alex glanced at her. "Even if you were confused, couldn't you ask me? You didn't give me a chance to explain and just walked away! Is that fair?"
Katherine glared at him. "Who said I didn't ask? I called you, but you lied and said you were still abroad! If you had nothing to hide, why lie?"
Alex paused, looking a bit guilty.
He sat up straight. "I'm sorry, that was my mistake. I wanted to tell you face-to-face. I thought explaining over the phone would make you angry."
Katherine scoffed. "You lied to avoid making me angry? You're making it sound like it's my fault!"
Alex, despite his strong presence, couldn't out-argue her.
"You're right, it was my fault!"
He gently lifted her onto his lap.
Katherine frowned. "What are you doing? Alex, we have no relationship now, so show some respect!"
Alex tightened his grip around her waist. "Can't I feel a bit wronged? You left me without a word!"
"I didn't run away; I left after our collaboration ended!"
Katherine struggled to break free, but her strength was no match for him.
Alex placed his hand on the back of her head, gently pressing her head onto his shoulder.
His deep voice coaxed her. "Listen to me. I know I was wrong. I didn't tell you about Scarlett and I adopting a child, which caused the misunderstanding. That was my mistake."
Hearing his sincere apology, Katherine paused and stopped struggling, becoming quiet.
He continued, "I know, as a married man, adopting a child with another woman is wrong. I didn't know how to tell you. But I couldn't refuse Scarlett's request because she saved my life years ago and suffered irreversible damage, so she can't have kids. I felt deeply indebted to her and overlooked some of her actions."
Katherine relaxed, lowering her eyes, listening.
"You once asked what Scarlett lost because of me. I didn't tell you because I promised the Mitchell family I wouldn't reveal their daughter's condition. But I was wrong; I should have been honest with you."
Katherine felt a mix of sadness and surprise at his humble tone.
Alex hugged her tighter, still uneasy, afraid she might get angry and leave again.
"Scarlett always said she loved kids and wanted one of her own, but she can't. So she asked me to accompany her to an adoption agency abroad, where they allow individualss to adopt without being married. She said if I helped her, it would repay her debt to me for saving my life, and she wouldn't interfere with our lives anymore. Before you, I could tolerate her clinging to me. But after meeting you, it wouldn't be fair to you. So I wanted to repay my debt quickly and agreed to help her."
Katherine frowned. "But didn't you still spend time with Scarlett and that child afterward?"
Alex sighed. "I didn't realize how many issues there would be. I oversimplified things. After returning to Janetrick, Scarlett was afraid to tell her family about the adoption, fearing they wouldn't understand and would send the child away. She asked me to find a temporary place for her and the child to stay."
He continued, "There were many issues with raising the child, and when she didn't know what to do, she would call me for help. I arranged for a nanny, but she would still call occasionally. Since I helped her adopt the child, I felt responsible, so I would help when I could. But it was just to help; I would leave after solving the problem, nothing more."
Katherine sneered inwardly. This was indeed Scarlett's style.
Alex had explained almost everything. "Do you have any other questions? I can explain everything."
Katherine shook her head. "No more."
He sat up straight. "If you have no questions, I do. Now it's my turn to ask you!"
Katherine blinked. "What else do you want to ask?"
He squinted his eyes, staring at her. "What's your relationship with Frank from the Crescent Group?"
Katherine looked embarrassed. "We're married."
Alex's brow furrowed. "Tell the truth!"
