Chapter 439 The Whole Story
"Alex, am I right?" Katherine asked, raising an eyebrow.
Alex looked down at her. "How do you know about that?"
Katherine smiled, lifting his chin playfully. "Because I was the little girl who saved you!"
Alex's eyes widened, grabbing her hand. "It was you?"
Katherine nodded. "Yep! The last day I brought you whole wheat bread, you were gone! I thought wolves got you, so I buried some bread as a memorial!"
Alex was stunned. So it was her! No wonder Scarlett never felt like the girl who saved him.
Katherine tilted her head. "Alex? What's wrong? Aren't you happy to know it was me?"
He snapped out of it, feeling thrilled. He kissed her hand, his voice deep and playful. "You knew all along? Why didn't you tell me?"
Katherine pouted. "I only found out recently. I didn't think it was worth mentioning, and I didn't want to use it to bind you! But today, I couldn't stand seeing you misled!"
Alex pulled her into a tight hug. "Katherine, you really are my savior!!"
Katherine squirmed. "Hey! Too tight, can't breathe..."
Scarlett watched, eyes red with jealousy. How could this be? The girl who saved Alex was Katherine? She didn't believe it!
Scarlett sniffled, feeling wronged. "Katherine, you're just trying to replace my life-saving favor to Alex! That's too much!"
Katherine, still in Alex's arms, gently pushed him to loosen his grip. She smiled at Scarlett. "Replace you? Do I need to?"
Scarlett gritted her teeth. "What proof do you have? Your words aren't enough. You don't even have a token!"
Katherine stood up, facing Scarlett with crossed arms. "I don't have physical proof, but our shared memories are enough for Alex to believe me."
Scarlett, unwilling to give up, argued, "Memories can be inaccurate! I was the one who saved Alex! I just can't remember the details, and you guessed right! I used to bring Alex whole wheat bread every day because I was sneaking out food!"
"And as far as I know, Katherine, you didn't live in the village where Alex was injured as a kid. So how could you have been there alone at such a young age? Clearly, you're lying!"
Katherine chuckled. "Scarlett, you just don't give up, do you? Let me explain.“
”I grew up eating charity meals at the church. The nun who adopted me took me to that village to collect herbs, so we stayed with the villagers for a while.“
”One day, I got separated from the nun in the mountains and decided to head back alone. On the way, I heard someone coughing in the bushes and found Alex, seriously injured and bitten by a venomous snake!“
”The nun taught me first aid, so I knew how to treat some injuries and snake bites. I sucked out the venom, applied herbs, and bandaged his wounds.“
”At first, I thought he was mute because he didn't respond to anything I said.“
"Later, I brought him whole wheat bread and water every day. Eventually, he realized I meant no harm and finally spoke, thanking me. That's when I knew he wasn't mute."
"I only brought whole wheat bread because that's what the nun and I ate. Scarlett, you grew up with the finest food. Finding whole wheat bread in your environment wouldn't be easy, right? So where did you get it to bring to Alex every day?"
Scarlett stammered, "I..."
She couldn't find a good reason and was speechless.
Katherine had nailed a point she couldn't argue against.
"I... I don't remember... Our family was well-off, but we occasionally had whole wheat bread. As a child, I took whatever food I found..."
Unable to argue, Scarlett started speaking vaguely.
Alex stepped forward, gently holding Katherine's shoulder, showing his stance without words. He coldly said, "Miss Mitchell, even now, you won't admit you impersonated my savior?"
Facing Alex, Scarlett softened. "Alex, I... I have the bracelet you gave me as a token. I really am the one who saved you..."
Alex replied, "I didn't personally hand you the bracelet. The subordinate responsible for delivering it made a mistake, and I will punish him."
Hearing this, Scarlett's heart sank, and she tried to use tears to gain sympathy. "Alex... I..."
Katherine was fed up. "Scarlett, save your tears. No one cares! Not only did you impersonate my role as the true savior for years, but you also lied about being infertile to guilt-trip Alex. You're truly despicable, shameless, and low!"
