Chapter 242 Charles, Call Aunt Katherine
Katherine knocked on the office door, pushed it open, and set a steaming cup of coffee on Bernard's desk. "Mr. Mitchell, your coffee," she said.
Bernard, buried in his documents, barely acknowledged her with a faint "hmm" as he reached for the cup and took a small sip, his focus still on the papers.
Sitting on the sofa in the guest area, Sophie watched Bernard with an expectant smile. She was sure he'd get mad and scold Katherine once he tasted the coffee loaded with extra sugar and cream.
But after Bernard took a sip, his expression didn't change. Everything seemed normal.
What was going on?
Sophie's smile faded, disappointment creeping in. Why wasn't Bernard reacting? Had his taste changed? Impossible!
Meanwhile, Katherine stood by Bernard's desk, sneaking glances at the photo in the frame.
Bernard took another sip and noticed the new secretary still standing there. He turned to her with a frown. "Why are you still here? Get out!"
Katherine quickly shifted her gaze from the photo and bowed her head slightly. "Yes, Mr. Mitchell."
She carried the tray to the guest area, bent down, and placed the remaining cup of coffee on the table in front of Sophie. "Miss Jones, have a cup of coffee too," she said with a smile.
"Thank you," Sophie forced a smile. She couldn't lose her composure in front of Bernard, but she glared at Katherine and whispered, "Didn't you add sugar and cream to Bernard's coffee?"
Katherine whispered back, "No, I didn't."
Sophie gritted her teeth. "Why not? Didn't I tell you Bernard's preference?"
Katherine smiled. "Miss Jones, did you really think I'd trust info from someone hostile towards me?"
Sophie was speechless, grinding her teeth in frustration. Katherine was cunning and not easy to deal with; she should have expected that Katherine wouldn't fall for it. Damn it!
Seeing Sophie's frustrated expression, Katherine kindly explained, "Miss Jones, do you know why I brought two cups?"
Sophie frowned, not getting her point.
Katherine smiled openly. "One cup has sugar and cream, as you suggested, and the other is plain. I didn't completely distrust you. If you were genuinely trying to help, I could switch the coffee to avoid displeasing Mr. Mitchell."
She continued, "Unfortunately, a leopard can't change its spots, and Miss Jones. It's clear you still had ill intentions. So, please enjoy the sugary, creamy coffee yourself!"
Sophie's face turned extremely ugly. "You."
Katherine straightened up, smiled at her again, and raised her voice. "Miss Jones, enjoy your coffee. Let me know if you need a refill."
With that, she walked out leisurely.
Katherine had indeed said she couldn't change her nature! Sophie was furious, clenching her fists, her nails digging into her palms, but she couldn't lash out at Katherine in this setting.
Bernard suddenly called out to Katherine, "Wait."
Katherine stopped and turned to Bernard. "Mr. Mitchell, do you have any other instructions?"
Bernard tossed a folder onto his desk. "Translate this document into Arabic and email it to our contacts in the Middle East."
"Yes, Mr. Mitchell." Katherine immediately picked up the folder and left to get to work.
Sophie was frustrated that Bernard didn't scold Katherine and was even insulted by her. However, seeing Bernard's cold attitude towards Katherine reassured her.
At least Bernard had high standards and wouldn't be attracted to someone like Katherine, a country girl..
Unlike Alex, who she couldn't comprehend what he saw in Katherine!
After Katherine left, only Sophie and Bernard remained in the office.
A man and a woman alone in a room, it was the perfect time to bond and chat.
However, after a long wait, Bernard still hadn't acknowledged her.
It seemed Bernard had forgotten she was there.
He kept reading documents or typing on his computer, and he was very busy.
Sophie watched her beloved man work seriously, feeling more and more moved. She wanted to get closer but did not dare disturb him.
When lunchtime arrived, Bernard still showed no signs of taking a break.
Worry crept into Sophie. "Bernard, aren't you hungry? It's lunchtime. How about eating something before continuing?"
Finally, Bernard glanced up at her. "Hmm, thank you. Leave the food there. I'll eat when I'm hungry. You can go now. I'll have Billy return the lunchbox to you later."
Sadness gripped Sophie as Bernard dismissed her, yet she hesitated to leave. She shook her head. "Bernard, it's okay. You don't have to worry about me. Scarlett said she would come here later, so I'll wait for her."
Bernard's expression remained indifferent. "Suit yourself."
Sophie forced a smile and continued to sit on the sofa, looking at the food she brought with disappointment.
Despite being insulated, the lunchbox would eventually cool down.
Bernard was still so cold to her!
She had admired Bernard since childhood but could never get close to him.
Although being Scarlett's best friend gave her some advantages and care from Bernard, he was always distant and cold.
Luckily, Bernard had always been upright, with no women around him.
So, Sophie believed that if she persisted, she would eventually win Bernard's heart.
With Scarlett's support, her chances were much better than other women’s!
Speaking of Scarlett, she did say she would come to Bernard's company. She should be here soon.
Sophie checked her phone and sent Scarlett a message: [Scarlett, where are you?]
Scarlett replied: [Sophie, I'm almost there. I'm moving slowly because of the baby. Wait a bit longer.]
Outside the CEO's office, Katherine was busy translating the document into Arabic when she suddenly heard a child's babbling.
At first, she didn't pay attention, thinking it was a hallucination from watching too many parenting videos during her pregnancy.
Until she heard Scarlett's soft voice. "Katherine."
Katherine paused, looked up, and saw Scarlett pushing a stroller in front of her desk.
In the stroller sat a chubby little boy, sucking on a pacifier and babbling.
