Chapter 978 Don't You Recognize Me

"We don't have any special relationship, just friends," Christina said with a smile, looking at herself in the mirror.

Gage realized that Christina didn't want to talk much about their relationship, so he didn't ask any more questions. He smiled and began to seriously apply her makeup.

Watching herself change little by little in the mirror, Christina felt a bit unreal.

From childhood to adulthood, she had never worn any beautiful clothes. Every time she saw Cheryl wearing a pretty dress, she was very envious, but she didn't dare to hope for one herself because even if she did, she wouldn't get it.

"Mom, tomorrow is my birthday. Can I have a pretty little dress?" Christina looked at Renee with anticipation, but received a cold response from Renee.

"What little dress? Didn't I buy you a lot of T-shirts? Christina, you should be content and not compare everything with Cheryl!"

Eight-year-old Christina never got the little dress she wanted.

And now, wearing the beautiful dress of her dreams, Christina wasn't as excited anymore.

Maybe when you didn't get something you really wanted, finally getting it loses its meaning.

The makeup and styling took more than two hours. When Christina appeared in front of Billy wearing the dress Bernard had chosen, even Billy, who was used to seeing all kinds of beauties, couldn't help but be amazed.

Christina had always dressed very simply, rarely wearing makeup, and even when she did, it was just a basic foundation.

Billy could tell that her features were beautiful, but he didn't expect that after careful dressing up, Christina would become so dazzling. The kind that stands out in a crowd.

"Billy, does this look okay? Is it too much?" Christina, not used to wearing dresses, was a bit nervous and lacked confidence even while standing.

Billy stood up with a smile, "Ms. Russell, you look beautiful. Let's go. Mr. Mitchell will meet you directly at the banquet hall. I'll take you to get something to eat first. You won't be able to eat much at the banquet, and it will go on quite late, so you can't stay hungry."

Billy took Christina to a fast-food restaurant to have a quick bite, then sent her to the banquet venue.

Learning that Bernard had already gone in alone, he let Christina go in to find Bernard herself.

"Go in by myself?" Christina stood at the door, nervous about the unfamiliar setting. "What if I couldn't find him?"

Billy noticed her nervousness and reassured her, "Ms. Russell, don't worry. You'll see Mr. Mitchell as soon as you go in. He's definitely waiting for you inside."

"Alright then." Christina sighed helplessly, turned to look at the entrance of the banquet, took a deep breath, and said, "I'll go in by myself then."

Christina walked into the banquet in high heels, handed the invitation Billy gave her to the reception staff at the door, and went in smoothly.

The banquet hall was already filled with people. Christina followed the crowd inside, not attracting much attention.

Christina looked around but couldn't see Bernard anywhere, which made her uneasy. Didn't Billy say Bernard would be waiting for her inside?

Where was he?

She wandered through the crowd, anxiously searching for Bernard.

"Miss, do you need help?" A man in a black suit appeared in front of Christina, smiling. "Are you looking for someone? If you need assistance, I can help."

Christina took a step back, eyeing him warily. "No, thank you. Please step aside, I need to go over there."

"I'm very familiar with this place. Tell me who you're looking for; maybe I know them!" The man blocked her way as she tried to bypass him, "Miss, don't be so cold! I'm just trying to help you! Why are you ignoring me?"

Christina, unable to leave immediately, had to patiently deal with him, "I have a companion, and I need to find him now. Could you please let me through?"

She thought she was being very polite, but the man suddenly got angry, "Who's your companion? Tell me!"

"Sorry, I can't tell you." Christina didn't want to entertain his advances.

But the man still blocked her way.

Christina sighed and asked, "Sir, what will it take for you to let me go?"

"You want to leave? It's simple." The man grabbed a glass of wine from nearby and handed it to Christina, "Just drink this, and I'll let you go!"

Christina looked at the glass but didn't take it.

Although she wasn't a good drinker, she could handle one glass.

However, she had already encountered danger twice because of drinking. Who knew if there was something else in the drink?

She wouldn't naively think it was just a drink. If she drank this one, there would be a second and a third until she was drunk!

"Sorry, I don't drink." Christina lifted her dress and tried to walk around him.

Jeremiah Britton grabbed her arm. "Trying to leave already? Not so fast."

Christina, not used to wearing high heels, lost her balance as he yanked her back.

Just when she thought she would embarrass herself in front of everyone, a man appeared behind her, wrapped his arm around her waist, and steadied her, "Are you okay?"

Christina, realizing who it was, was stunned!

The man who caught her looked up coldly, "This lady is my friend. Do you have any business with her?"

Jeremiah immediately toned down his arrogance, shrugged, and left with his drink.

After Jeremiah left, the man who saved Christina smiled at her and asked with concern, "Are you okay? Did he scare you?"

Meeting his gaze, Christina felt a sense of inferiority.

How could she meet him here?

Seeing her silence, the man spoke again, "What? Don't you recognize me after all these years?"

"Yes, I do." Christina awkwardly replied, then realized she sounded too eager and quickly lowered her head, "Of course I do, Ruben."

Christina's mind flashed back to the day of the school opening ceremony when Ruben Rojas, as the freshman representative, spoke in front of all the new students, and she looked up at him from the crowd, admiring his shining presence.

From that moment, Ruben became a beacon in her life.

Christina often looked up to this beacon, but her feelings of inferiority kept her from reaching out to touch it.
