Chapter 295 The More You Try to Avoid, the More You Encounter
Katherine snapped back to reality. "Yeah. You wait here for Mr. Melville. I'll leave first."
She was about to hail a cab and leave.
Sunny grabbed her arm. "Why are you leaving? Alex just said he'd give us both a ride. Why waste money on a cab?"
Katherine replied, "I need to get back to the office."
Sunny wasn't buying it. "What's the rush? Didn't you finish all your work?"
Katherine forced a smile. "I finished the morning tasks, but there's still work for the afternoon! Do you think working is that easy?"
Sunny scrutinized her face. "Katherine, are you in such a hurry to leave because you're afraid to face Alex?"
Katherine was speechless.
Sunny thought he had figured it out. "What? Can't accept that Alex is with Scarlett now? I told you long ago that you and Alex weren't a good match. Alex was always going to choose Scarlett, but you didn't believe me!"
Katherine chuckled. "Could you please stop judging others based on your assumptions?"
Sunny arrogantly replied, "Who's assuming? If it's not what I said, then wait with me for Alex to give us a ride! Otherwise, you definitely have something to hide!"
Katherine was exasperated but was eventually dragged back to the antique shop by him.
Inside, Alex was already sitting in the lounge area, drinking coffee and waiting. The shop owner was personally attending to him.
"Mr. Melville, look! This is the antique vase I specially brought over from overseas for you. Do you like it?"
Alex glanced at it and said indifferently, "It's fine, wrap it up."
The shop owner was delighted. "Alright. Joseph, wrap this vase carefully for Mr. Melville!"
"Yes, sir!" answered Joseph.
Sunny, out of curiosity, went over to look at the rare vase.
Katherine didn't join them. She didn't want to hitch a ride with Alex, but she couldn't do anything about Sunny dragging her back. If she left again, it would seem like she was guilty and afraid to face Alex.
Actually, it wasn't fear but reluctance.
But since she was already back, she decided to go with the flow and started browsing the shop.
Out of boredom, Katherine picked up the small wooden horse she had looked at earlier, admiring its craftsmanship.
The small wooden horse was intricately carved but had some surface wear, likely from its previous owner. It had a deep, glossy patina.
She quite liked the small wooden horse and had hesitated earlier about buying it, but then she thought it was useless.
At that moment, a shop assistant approached her. "Excuse me, ma'am, the item in your hand has already been bought by another customer. Could you please hand it over for packaging?"
Did someone else buy it?
Katherine looked at the assistant and then around the shop. Besides her and Sunny, the only other customer was Alex. Did he buy it?
Alex was still lazily sitting by the table. As a rare and valuable customer, he didn't need to browse himself; the owner would have someone bring the most precious items to him. He looked every bit the part of a privileged capitalist.
Alex's deep, narrow eyes seemed to be glance in her direction, or perhaps not.
Katherine looked away, reluctantly handing the small wooden horse to the assistant before moving to another part of the shop to browse.
The shelves obscured her slender figure.
Alex's brow furrowed slightly.
After purchasing the item, Alex lost interest in browsing further and stood up.
The shop owner respectfully saw him off. "Mr. Melville, take care. If you need anything else, please come again. I've had the vase securely placed in your car."
Alex walked out slowly.
Seeing Alex leave, Sunny called Katherine to follow him out and get into Alex's car.
In Alex's car, Katherine silently sat by the window, scrolling through her phone, with Sunny between her and Alex.
Unable to contain his childlike curiosity, Sunny asked, "Alex, is the vase you just bought also a gift for my grandpa?"
Alex, staring out the window, replied, "Yes."
Sunny was delighted. "I knew it! I've never heard of you being interested in antiques, but my grandpa loves collecting old things. He'll definitely like it!"
Sunny continued to chatter about his grandpa's collection, but Alex didn't respond.
Katherine also remained silent, scrolling through her phone, deep in thought.
From their conversation, she gathered that Alex would also be attending the banquet tomorrow.
Which meant she would have to see him again tomorrow.
The more she tried to avoid him, the more inevitable their encounters became.
Annoying!
The Mitchell Group wasn't far from the antique shop, and the car soon arrived.
Sunny and Katherine got out.
Sunny called out, "Thanks, Alex! See you at the banquet tomorrow!"
Alex nodded slightly, expressionless, and rolled up the window.
The black Mercedes slowly accelerated and drove away.
Watching the car leave, Sunny proudly raised his chin at Katherine. "See? Even someone as aloof as Alex would go out of his way to give me a ride. Do you know why?"
Katherine, looking bored, replied, "No."
Sunny raised his chin higher, his smugness evident. "It's because Alex sees me as his brother-in-law, so he's nice to me!"
Katherine smirked. "Really? But I remember the Mitchell family and the Melville family don't get along. Why is Mr. Melville attending your grandpa's birthday banquet tomorrow?"
Sunny explained, "While there's tension between the Mitchell and the Melville families, my grandparents have always maintained a cordial relationship with the Melvilles. ."
They continued talking as they walked into the elevator.
After exiting the elevator, Sunny followed Katherine to her office. He didn't dare go back to Bernard's office, fearing a scolding.
However, he couldn't avoid it anyway!
Sunny swaggered in, but as soon as he opened Katherine's office door, he froze, his expression turning grim, and his back went cold.
Seeing him stuck at the door, Katherine knew someone was inside. She walked forward and took a look inside.
Bernard was sitting at Katherine's desk, his handsome face unreadable, his tone flat. "Where have you two been?"
