Chapter 231 Katherine Goes to the Mitchell Family for a Job Interview
Katherine and Jonathan stared at each other for a good ten seconds. Realizing the chicken nuggets were getting cold, Katherine looked down and started eating while they were still warm.
After finishing, she wiped her mouth and said, "Mr. Mostow, thanks for telling me about Lotus today. But I can't be sure if it's all true; I need to check it out. As for your question, it's still up in the air."
Up in the air?
That was way better than Jonathan had hoped for. At least it wasn't a straight-up no.
"Katherine, I won't push you, but I hope in the future, if you run into problems, you'll think of me as your go-to guy," he said.
Katherine chuckled, "You're always so helpful! Alright, if I need anything, I'll ask!"
She said "up in the air" because if she flat-out rejected Jonathan, he'd probably keep talking forever.
And she didn't want to hear it anymore.
Jonathan looked at her hopefully and asked, "So, can we exchange contact info now?"
Katherine thought for a moment, then handed him her phone.
Jonathan was a bit surprised but quickly got it.
He took her phone, entered his number, and saved it. Then he called his own phone from hers, saved her number, and handed it back with a smile.
He said, "Katherine, you’ve just made my day."
Katherine smirked and said, "If you're happy, eat more. The food won't taste good cold!"
"If you call me Jonathan, I'll be even happier," he added.
Katherine called out, "Alright, Mr. Mostow!"
Knowing she wouldn't change how she addressed him, Jonathan chuckled softly, picked up his fork, and joined her in eating. They chatted about random, light topics.
After finishing their meal, they left the fast food place. In the mall, a row of TVs in an electronics store was looping some sensational news.
Katherine quietly watched the same news on all the TVs.
The news showed a silhouette of a man and a woman, with no clear view of their faces, and didn't mention names or specific identities.
But anyone who knew them could tell right away who they were talking about!
Jonathan stood beside Katherine, watching the news. He seemed a bit surprised and sighed. "It's not easy! Alex and Scarlett finally overcame their parents' opposition and got together. It's a happy ending for them!"
Katherine smirked sarcastically, moved her gaze away from the TV, and said indifferently, "Jonathan, that's it for today! I'm leaving now, bye!"
Jonathan blocked her and asked, "Wait! Katherine, when can we meet again?"
"If fate allows, we'll meet again!" Katherine waved her hand nonchalantly, walked around Jonathan, and left at a leisurely pace.
Jonathan didn't follow her, just stood there watching her leave, smiling deeply.
Katherine returned to her place in Lindvale.
Frank was lying on the couch playing a game. Seeing her return, he got up, tossed his phone aside, and asked, "Katherine, you're back! So, did you meet Michelangelo?"
Feeling tired, Katherine lazily sat down. "No."
Frank found it strange and asked, "You didn't meet Michelangelo, so why are you back so late?"
"I ran into an acquaintance and we had a meal together," she answered.
Frank asked, "An acquaintance? Who?"
Katherine rubbed her aching temples, her expression turning serious. "It's not important! Frank, I need you to thoroughly investigate the Mitchell family, especially Bernard."
"Got it!" Frank didn't ask more questions, picked up his phone, and immediately started digging.
Katherine leaned back on the couch, closing her eyes to rest.
Being two months pregnant made her tire easily, and her energy wasn't what it used to be.
She and Frank had been in Lindvale for a month. Ambrosia stayed in Janetrick to manage the group, occasionally coming over to reunite with them.
For the past month, she had been investigating Claire's identity in Lindvale but made no progress.
The clues Joshua provided were problematic. Lindvale University never had a student named Claire Austin.
She had called Joshua to confirm, but he insisted he had remembered correctly, saying Claire was indeed named Claire Austin and was once the campus queen of Lindvale University.
The trail had gone cold!
She could only rely on finding Claire's mentor, Michelangelo, for new clues.
However, there was a problem: Michelangelo couldn't come here.
As a result, she met Jonathan at the gallery and got significant clues about Claire's identity from him.
Frank hung up the phone and immediately reported, "Katherine, I've got the information!"
Katherine opened her eyes and said, "What did you find?"
Frank read the detailed information sent to his phone and said, "The Mitchell family is well-respected and prestigious in Janetrick. The elders are all significant figures who have contributed to society. Bernard is the son of Edwin Mitchell and Claire Ayers, the youngest daughter of the prominent Ayers family in Lindvale."
Claire Ayers and Claire Austin were so similar; they had to be the same person!
Either Joshua remembered Claire's name incorrectly back then, or Claire intentionally told her classmates a different version of her name.
Katherine ordered, "Well, go on!"
Frank continued, "Later, Claire Ayers had an affair and a daughter with another man. When the Mitchell family found out, they kicked them out and claimed they were missing."
Hearing this, Katherine frowned and exclaimed, "Impossible!"
She couldn't believe that the gentle and kind Claire she remembered would do something like having an affair!
Frank likely guessed something and didn't continue.
Katherine suddenly asking him to investigate the Mitchell family must be related to Claire.
Katherine pinched her brow, stayed silent for a moment, and then said, "Frank, check what positions the Mitchell Group is currently hiring for."
Frank was stunned, understood something, and immediately started checking without asking more. "Katherine! The Mitchell Group is currently hiring a secretary for Bernard."
Katherine narrowed her eyes, making up her mind. "Frank, get ready. We're going back to Janetrick tomorrow."
Frank frowned with concern, then asked, "Katherine, you're not planning to apply for the secretary position, are you?"
Katherine nodded and replied, "That's right!"
"Bernard is notoriously difficult to deal with, and you two have had unpleasant encounters before. If you apply for his secretary position, you'll definitely give you a hard time!" he remarked.
Katherine stated, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."
