Katherine pursed her lips. "Alright, we're just friends."
Hearing her finally admit it, Alex felt a weight lift off his shoulders.
"Why'd you lie to me?" he asked, still annoyed.
Katherine looked away, avoiding his gaze. "I thought you and Scarlett were a couple with a kid. I didn't want to be a side chick."
Alex snorted. "You think I'm the type to have a mistress?"
Katherine rolled her eyes. "You never really know someone! I've only known you for three months. How could I be sure what kind of person you really are?"
Before she could finish, Alex grabbed her hand and pulled it inside his suit jacket, pressing it against his chest. She felt his warmth and steady heartbeat.
Startled, she wondered what he was doing.
Alex's deep voice broke the silence. "Want to take it out and see?"
Katherine was stunned, meeting his affectionate eyes. After a long stare, she asked, "Alex, do you really like me?"
He leaned in, his nose brushing against hers, and she felt his heartbeat quicken under her palm.
He whispered in her ear, "Do I need to answer with words?"
Katherine was speechless.
Alex rubbed his stubbled cheek against her smooth one. "I don't know when it started, but being near you makes my heart race uncontrollably. You tell me, do I really like you?"
Katherine's eyelashes trembled. She wouldn't admit that her heart also raced whenever she was close to Alex.
Alex sighed. "If I could control it, I wouldn't let you, this heartless girl, make my life so miserable. Stop running away. You can't escape."
Katherine snapped back to reality, blinked, and smiled. "Alex, I didn't expect you to nail it!"
Alex raised an eyebrow. "Hmm? What?"
Katherine shrugged. "You're good at sweet-talking! Whether it's true or not, your little act just now really won me over!"
Alex frowned. "Katherine, listen carefully. Every word and action just now came from the heart! I don't have much experience, and I don't understand emotions. I just say what comes to mind; don't overthink it!"
His sincere eyes made Katherine's resolve crumble. Even though she knew his status could cause trouble, she couldn't resist.
She thought, 'Maybe this is why the wise don't fall in love.'
Now, knowing Alex and Scarlett had no relationship and no child, Katherine had to admit her heart still held onto this man.
She sighed, realizing her hand was still on his chest, and impulsively asked, "Alex, you said you don't have much experience. Am I the first woman in your life?"
"Yes," he answered without hesitation.
Feeling his steady heartbeat, she knew he wasn't lying.
Katherine's expression was curious. "Alex, you're in your thirties and never been in a relationship?"
Alex's face darkened. "Busy, no time."
Katherine frowned. "A guy like you, single for thirty years straight? What a waste of such a handsome face! You must've been a heartthrob in your younger days. Such a pity!"
Alex's eyes narrowed. "What? Do I look old now?"
She looked at him in his suit, with his mature, slicked-back hair. He looked very handsome, but she nodded. "Pretty much."
Alex's face darkened, and he tightened his grip on her waist, bringing his face closer. "That's right! I'm older and don't have much dating experience. But I can work out and take care of myself for you. We can 'adjust' and 'explore' together. I won't disappoint you."
Hearing 'work out,' 'adjust,' and 'explore' emphasized, Katherine's face flushed. "Ahem, what are you talking about? I... I don't understand!"
Alex squinted, teasing. Katherine, who was just mocking him, now knew how to blush.
Alex chuckled. "It's okay if you don't understand. I can explain it to you thoroughly tonight."
Katherine blushed and punched him. "You... shameless!"
Alex's eyes twinkled with mockery. "Looks like you did understand, not so dumb after all!"
Katherine was speechless. 'Hmph, men! Always turning the conversation to sex! Shameless!'
She changed the subject, looking out the car window. "Where are we going now?"
Alex said calmly, "To your place."
Katherine frowned, becoming alert. "Alex! What are you going to my place for?"
Alex, with a composed attitude, said, "To help you pack and take you home."
Katherine resisted. "Did I agree? Besides, that is my home. I have no plans to move!"
Hearing her refer to that place as home, his brow furrowed. He didn't get angry; his tone was calm but firm. "Whether you agree or not, I can't let you live with another man."
Katherine hadn't decided what she wanted with Alex and certainly hadn't considered moving back to the Melville family.
"Alex, I told you Frank and I are just friends! You looked into him. You should know he only likes those sexy girls in photos. I'm not his type!"
"Still not acceptable."
"Alex, I haven't agreed to anything with you yet! You can't interfere with my life!"
