Chapter 586 Give Me a Child
The bodyguards just stood there, watching Frank's car zoom off, looking like a bunch of lost puppies.
"Now what? We totally lost Mrs. Melville. How are we gonna explain this to Mr. Melville?"
"We're screwed! Mr. Melville's gonna tear us apart!"
"We're so screwed!"
The head bodyguard snapped, "Enough whining! If you're so scared of Mr. Melville, why are you just standing around? Get moving and follow that car! Something's definitely fishy about them showing up here. We might still find Mrs. Melville!"
"Yes, sir!"
Meanwhile, on the flip side...
On a quiet, out-of-the-way road near a park, a white Bugatti was chilling.
Katherine hustled over and hopped in, yanking off her wig. She'd already swapped out her Melville family clothes for the ones Ambrosia stashed in the Arborwood Grove restroom, dodging the Melville bodyguards.
Jonathan grinned at her. "You're pretty slick with the disguises!"
Katherine, panting from all the running, wasn't in the mood for chit-chat. "Save it and drive!"
Jonathan laughed and hit the gas, getting them outta there.
But they hadn't gone far when Jonathan veered into a residential area.
Seeing the detour, Katherine frowned. "Aren't we heading to the airport? Where are you taking me?"
Jonathan replied, "Heading straight to the airport now would be a total trap. Alex will have people swarming all the major airports and train stations once he knows you bailed. He won't even skip the highway exits."
Katherine thought about it and figured he had a point, but she couldn't believe Alex would go that far for her. "So, where are we going now?"
Jonathan said, "We'll lay low at my place for a couple of days. Once the heat dies down, I'll get you out of the country on a private jet."
Katherine was surprised but nodded. "Thanks. But is this your place?"
She glanced out the window at the plain neighborhood, which didn't seem like his style.
Jonathan smirked, "Yep, this is my spot. Not impressed? It's definitely not as fancy as Melville Manor!"
Katherine shook her head and slouched back in the seat. "Why would I mind? I've lived in way worse places as a kid! It just doesn't seem like your kind of place."
Jonathan smiled, "This is where I grew up. Haven't been here in ages. Since you ditched the Melville family, staying somewhere low-key is smarter, so I brought you here."
"I get it." Katherine still found it odd. 'Wasn't Jonathan a Mostow family kid too? Living in such a regular neighborhood seems off.' she thought.
But she didn't push it.
It wasn't cool to dig into someone's personal stuff.
This neighborhood didn't have an underground garage, so Jonathan parked the car outside and led Katherine into a building.
On the second floor, Jonathan pulled out a key and unlocked the door. "Come on in."
Katherine stepped into the living room and was taken aback.
The place looked old from the outside, but inside it was pretty nice—simple yet classy, and super clean, like it wasn't used much.
"Katherine, make yourself at home. I'll grab you a drink." Jonathan headed to the kitchen.
Katherine plopped down on the sofa and glanced around until Jonathan handed her a bottle of yogurt.
He smiled warmly. "You probably shouldn't have anything fizzy right now. Yogurt okay?"
Katherine took the yogurt and smiled back. "Thanks."
Jonathan cracked open a bottle of cola, took a sip, and settled into a nearby armchair.
Katherine stared at the yogurt bottle, turning it over like she was looking for something.
Jonathan chuckled. "Worried I poisoned it?"
Katherine looked up. "No. You said you don't come here often. Who knows how long this stuff's been in the fridge? I'm just checking if it's expired!"
Jonathan laughed. "I bought it yesterday just for you. Everything in the fridge is fresh, so relax."
Katherine found the expiration date and saw it was good, then opened the bottle and took a sip.
Jonathan leaned back, watching her. "Katherine, are you really set on leaving Alex this time?"
The tangy yogurt, once a pleasant distraction, now tasted bitter as Alex's name echoed in her mind. "Do you think I'm playing hide and seek with him?"
Jonathan squinted slightly. "Can you tell me why?"
Katherine didn't really want to get into it, but since he had helped her, she felt she owed him an answer. "He's been shady with me and played with my emotions."
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. "Just because of that?"
Katherine frowned. "Isn't that serious enough? If two people can't even be honest with each other, what's the point of being together?"
Jonathan sighed, "In the adult world, there's no such thing as pure love. It's all about weighing the options."
Katherine didn't deny that Jonathan had a point. "Maybe I'm just weird for being so into love. I just won't date anymore."
"Don't say that! Look at me!" Jonathan laughed, pointing at himself.
Katherine rolled her eyes. "You just said there's no pure love, and now you want me to look at you?"
Jonathan sat up straighter. "Katherine, you know how I feel about you, right? Now that you've decided to leave Alex, how about dating me?"
Katherine looked at him skeptically. "Jonathan, are you serious?"
Jonathan nodded. "Do I look like I'm joking?"
Katherine sneered, "Don't forget, I'm still pregnant with Alex's kid. Even though I've decided to leave him, I'm not planning to ditch the baby. You don't mind that I'm carrying another man's child?"
Jonathan replied without missing a beat. "I don't mind. You can give me one later!"
