Chapter 352 Save Charles
Katherine wanted to ask the maid who brought the coffee if the blood on it came from the kitchen staff slaughtering chickens or ducks. But when she looked up, the maid was already gone, and no other servants were around.
Katherine frowned, thinking about poor Charles, who Scarlett always used. Could Scarlett have hurt him again? She got up and followed the maid's path.
Katherine trailed the maid to the large kitchen. But there were no servants, the countertops were clean, and there were no signs of any poultry being slaughtered. If the blood on the coffee cup wasn't from poultry, could it be human blood? Could it be Charles' blood? Even stranger, the maid was nowhere to be found, even though Katherine had seen her enter.
Feeling uneasy, Katherine looked around cautiously. The place was empty, but nothing seemed unusual. Suddenly, she noticed blood drops on the floor! There were several drops, suggesting a bleeding person or animal had passed through.
Katherine's eyes followed the blood trail to an old, tightly closed iron door at the far end of the kitchen. Could Charles be locked in there, injured and bleeding? Alarmed but cautious, she decided to call someone from the Mitchell family to check it out.
As she turned around, she was startled to see Scarlett standing behind her, looking pale and holding a sharp chisel. Katherine instinctively stepped back and asked calmly, "What do you want?"
Scarlett suddenly started crying. "Katherine... you're just in time. Please help me!"
Katherine frowned, suspecting Scarlett might be acting. "Help you with what?"
Scarlett, trembling and seemingly frightened, pointed to the blood drops. "I came to the kitchen to find Charles, thinking he might be hiding here for snacks, and then I saw blood on the floor!"
Katherine glanced at the blood drops and then back at Scarlett. "And then, what do you want me to help you with?"
Tears fell from Scarlett's eyes. "I'm so scared it's Charles's blood! I followed the trail to that storage room. I tried to open the door but couldn't. I heard a rough man's cough from inside! Katherine, someone has taken Charles! He's in there."
"I need to save my son, save my Charles! Katherine, help me break open that door!" Scarlett pleaded, raising the chisel excitedly.
Katherine eyed Scarlett, half-believing, half-doubting. Scarlett seemed genuinely desperate, unlike her usual performances. If Scarlett was telling the truth, and there was a man in that storage room holding Charles hostage, it could be a home invasion gone wrong.
Considering Charles' safety, Katherine set aside her prejudices and said, "Don't act rashly. If someone is holding your son inside, breaking the door might provoke them to harm him. We don't know the situation inside or how many people are in there. We should call your family first."
Katherine was about to find someone when Scarlett grabbed her, eyes full of panic. "There's no need to call anyone. I've already called Bernard. He and Alex will be here soon! We can't leave. If we go, the person inside might escape with Charles."
Katherine paused, thinking. Scarlett had a point. Leaving could give the person inside a chance to escape, but staying alone wasn't safe either. Since Scarlett had already called Bernard, they should wait.
"Alright." Katherine agreed. "But no one should act rashly before they arrive."
Scarlett nodded, still trembling. "Katherine, hold this chisel. In case the person inside rushes out, you can defend yourself. I'm too distraught to hold it."
Scarlett quickly handed the chisel to Katherine, who caught it just in time to avoid it falling on her foot. But before Katherine could react, Scarlett suddenly lost it. She ran towards the storage room, shouting, "Charles, don't be afraid. Mommy is coming to save you."
Katherine's brows furrowed. What was Scarlett doing? Everything they had just discussed was in vain?
Scarlett yanked open the door, which wasn't as stuck as she had made it seem. It opened almost immediately, and a bunch of miscellaneous items spilled out, along with a child's body rolling into the clutter.
Scarlett's piercing scream echoed through the house. "Charles!!!"
Seeing something was wrong, Katherine quickly walked over and saw the small, unconscious Charles lying among the clutter. Her pupils contracted, and she gasped.
