Chapter 543 "Alex, did you cheat?"
Nathan felt kinda helpless and nosy, dropped his head and sighed, then looked up at her with eyes on fire, "Katherine, if... I mean, if you ever find yourself single again, then I..."
"Hey, what do you think about Fiona?" Katherine cut him off with a smile, like she knew exactly what he was gonna say and stopped him just in time.
Nathan blinked, "What do you mean?"
Katherine shot back, "I mean, how do you feel about her?"
Nathan was a bit thrown, "She's cool, why?"
Katherine pressed her lips together, "Good to hear. It's getting late, so I won't keep you. Fiona's got a driver to take you home."
The polite but kinda distant way she was seeing him off made Nathan feel awkward. The words he wanted to say just got stuck. He nodded, said goodbye, and walked off.
Katherine watched Nathan head to the car, then turned to go back inside.
But as soon as she turned around, she saw Fiona storming over, all fired up, "Hey! Katherine! What did you just say to Nathan?"
"Nothing much." Katherine was tired and had to get up early tomorrow to go to the Villa, so she didn't want to deal with this.
Fiona wasn't backing down. She spread her arms to block Katherine's way, "If you don't tell me, I'll call my brother and tell him you're sneaking around with other guys behind his back!"
Katherine crossed her arms, a defiant smile on her face, and raised her chin, "Go ahead, call him. It's morning in Markovia right now, he should be free."
Fiona just wanted to scare Katherine into spilling, but she forgot Katherine wasn't someone who'd get scared easily!
But now that she made the threat, she couldn't back down.
Katherine yawned, "You calling or not? If not, I'm gonna wash up and hit the sack! Move aside, okay?"
Fiona, fuming, said, "Fine! I'll call! If I can't get anything out of you, I'll let Alex ask you!"
With that, Fiona actually pulled out her phone and dialed Alex's number.
Katherine squinted, watching Fiona's phone.
She didn't think Fiona would actually call because Fiona was super scared of her brother and wouldn't dare act up in front of Alex.
But since the call was made, she was curious to see if he'd pick up and what he'd say.
The phone rang forever without anyone answering. Just when Katherine and Fiona thought it wouldn't connect, someone picked up.
But it wasn't Alex's voice on the other end, it was a woman's sultry, low voice speaking in a foreign language. "Bonjour?"
Katherine's eyes narrowed, her gaze turning icy as she stared at the phone.
Fiona had put the call on speaker to prove she had the guts, but when she heard a woman's voice, she was stunned!
Oh crap! Did she just mess up her brother's 'good' time?!
"Who are you? Why do you have my brother's phone?" Fiona asked, all angry.
The person on the other end, hearing English, switched it up, "Is this Fiona? Your brotherisn't awake yet. Got something urgent? Should I wake him, or you wanna call back later?"
Hearing her name, Fiona realized this person knew her brother pretty well. But she didn't recognize the voice and wasn't sure if it was someone she knew.
In front of Katherine, Fiona felt it was best to keep it short, so she said, "It's not urgent. I'll call back later."
She quickly hung up and glanced at Katherine to see her reaction.
Normally, a married woman would snatch the phone and demand to know who the woman was and why she was answering her husband's phone, maybe even start cursing.
But Katherine? She just looked away, calm as ever, and said nothing.
This made Fiona feel even more uneasy, thinking she might've stirred up trouble. She quickly tried to cover for her brother, "Katherine, don't get the wrong idea! That woman is probably just Alex's secretary abroad! Leander didn't go on this trip with Alex, so he must have a secretary with him!"
Katherine gave a faint smile, "A secretary can just waltz into your brother's room and answer his phone while he's asleep?"
Fiona scratched her head, "Maybe that secretary's got no sense of boundaries and is trying to hit on Alex! Alex probably doesn't even know! Besides, Alex is the kind of guy a lot of women like, but he'd never cheat!"
Katherine laughed, "Alright, if you wanna believe that, go ahead! I'm gonna wash up and crash now!"
With that, she walked past Fiona, went inside, upstairs to her room, and took a shower.
Fiona stood there, feeling like she had messed up again. After Katherine left, she pulled out her phone and called back to get the scoop.
This time, Alex picked up. "What is it?"
His voice was cold and low, with that groggy edge from just waking up.
Fiona didn't dare raise her voice and asked cautiously, "Alex, did you just wake up?"
"Yeah." Alex's voice had that unique hoarseness and fatigue of someone who just woke up.
Fiona felt something was off and gasped, "Alex, who was that woman who answered the phone? Did you sleep with her?"
There was a moment of silence before he coldly said, "It's night over there. Why aren't you sleeping? What do you want?"
Fiona, scared by Alex's stern tone, quickly explained, "No, no, it's not me; it's Katherine."
"What about her?" Alex's tone noticeably sharpened.
Fiona said, "She's fine! Don't worry. It's just that when that woman answered the phone, Katherine was next to me and heard it. Alex, you didn't really cheat, did you?"
The response Fiona got was the sudden sound of a busy signal.
The call was abruptly hung up!
Fiona frowned at her phone, feeling like she might've stirred up a whole lot of trouble.
'What should I do?! I shouldn't have made that call!'she mused.
