Chapter 576 Abdication
Anton bent down. "Alright, Mrs. Melville, chill out. I'll go find Charles right now!"
With that, Anton dashed off to hunt down Charles.
Katherine turned to Teresa. "Teresa, go help Anton keep an eye on Charles. That kid's a handful."
Teresa, always the simple one, nodded without a second thought. "Sure thing!"
Teresa took off too, leaving just Katherine, Frank, and Ambrosia in the living room.
Seeing the chance, they jumped at it to talk.
Ambrosia whispered, "Katherine, what's the deal? Why haven't you been answering calls or texts?"
Katherine sighed. "My phone's been messed with. I can only call or get calls from Alex. Can't reach you guys, can't send texts."
Frank looked pissed. "Is Alex trying to lock you up or something?"
A smirk crossed Katherine's face. "Guess he knows I found out about his other marriage. He's scared I'll bolt but still wants the baby, so he's being super careful."
Frank's jaw dropped. "Holy crap! He’s not planning to keep you locked up till you give birth, is he?"
Ambrosia kicked Frank. "Chill out! Don't be so dramatic. We're in Melville Manor!"
Frank cleared his throat and straightened up. "So, what's the plan?"
Katherine said, "We need to figure out a way to get me out of here."
Frank rubbed his chin, thinking. "Mrs. Sandra Melville was pretty on edge earlier. She’s not gonna let you go easily."
Katherine knew Sandra was in on it with Alex, watching her every move. "I’m not talking about today. One of you needs to leave your phone with me. I need to stay connected."
Frank nudged Ambrosia. "You leave your phone with Katherine. I still need mine."
Ambrosia shot him a cold look. "Your phone's important, and mine's not? Leave yours!"
Seeing them bicker, Katherine frowned. "Seriously? Is it that hard to lend me a phone?"
'It's not that I don't want to lend her my phone; I just don't want her seeing those messy texts from Sunny,' Ambrosia thought as she quickly cleared some stuff from her phone and handed it to Katherine.
Katherine pocketed it fast. "Later, you two play nice with Sandra. Keep her happy so she lets her guard down!"
With that, Katherine headed to the kitchen.
The Melville Manor's kitchen was huge, bright, and fancy.
Sandra was overseeing lunch prep, but the staff wouldn't let her do everything. She just sat there, supervising.
When Katherine walked in, the staff greeted her politely.
Sandra looked surprised. "Katherine, what are you doing in the kitchen? Go hang out with your friends. I'll call you when lunch is ready!"
Katherine flashed a small smile. "It's cool. They're munching on dessert over there. Thought I'd see if I could help out."
Sandra waved her off. "No way! We've got plenty of hands here. You're pregnant; better stay out of the kitchen."
Katherine glanced at her belly, giving it a gentle rub. "Sandra, you really care about this baby, huh?"
Sandra nodded earnestly. "Of course, you're carrying my great-grandchild. How could I not care?"
Katherine's tone turned a bit cold. "So, after I give birth, am I just useless to you?"
Sandra looked shocked and quickly grabbed Katherine's hand. "Katherine, what are you talking about?"
Katherine gave a bitter smile. "I just feel like I'm trapped here in the Melville family, like a baby-making machine, always being watched and fussed over."
Sandra sighed. "Katherine, I admit I've been more cautious because you're pregnant, but even before that, I genuinely cared for you! I'm old and really want a great-grandchild, but I never saw you as just a baby-making machine!"
Katherine kept her gaze down. "But it feels like you've changed, and Alex has too."
Sandra tightened her grip on Katherine's hand. "Alex has been swamped with work. Once he's free, I'll make sure he spends more time with you."
Katherine gently pulled her hand back. "If there's nothing I can help with, I'll head back out." She turned to leave, looking all down and out.
Sandra felt a pang of concern and called out, "Katherine."
Katherine stopped and turned around, "Yeah?"
Sandra walked over and gently touched Katherine's face. "Katherine, you must be extra sensitive because of the pregnancy. Don't overthink it. I promise Alex really cares about you! I know you're upset because he arranged for people to watch over you and not let you go out. But he's genuinely worried something might happen to you while he's away. How about this? If it's sunny tomorrow, I'll go out with you. Those people won't dare stop me. You can go wherever you want, and I'll be with you!"
Katherine's eyes lit up. "Really?"
Sandra nodded firmly. "Of course, have I ever lied to you?"
"Thanks, Sandra! But I don't even know where I want to go. Being cooped up like this sucks. I'll let you know once I decide." Katherine said.
"I get it. Alex is just too overprotective! I'll talk to him about it later. Now, go hang out with your friends! I'll call you when lunch is ready!"
Katherine nodded obediently. As she turned around, her obedient look faded, replaced by a calm and composed expression.
'Yeah, I'm pissed about being restricted, but I don't expect the Melville family to lift the restrictions. They're all in on it. By playing weak and getting Sandra to take me out, I can find a way to escape with way less hassle. As for Alex, I'm totally done with him,' Katherine thought.
