Chapter 317 Prenatal Checkup

Katherine paused in the middle of drying her hair. "Yeah, I know."

Leander was baffled. "Ms. Galatea, if you knew Mr. Melville was looking for you, why didn't you come back to talk? If there's a misunderstanding, you two can clear it up face to face!"

In all his years, Katherine was the least interested in Mr. Melville he had ever met.

He soon realized Katherine was different. She wasn't looking to marry rich or climb the social ladder. She had no interest in the Melville family.

Simply put, Katherine was a free spirit, craving independence and a touch of mystery.

During her three months with the Melvilles, she kept her distance. She only played the part of Mr. Melville's partner when necessary. She never flaunted the Melville name and didn't want anyone to know she was connected to them.

Katherine was always indifferent to Mr. Melville. She slept in separate rooms and never tried to use her pregnancy to trap him.

It was this unique attitude that slowly melted Mr. Melville's icy heart.

Leander noticed the change in Mr. Melville. He had never seen him so patient, gentle, and eager to please anyone like he was with Katherine.

Even with his savior, Miss Mitchell, Mr. Melville was never warm, just dutiful.

But just over a month ago, when things were getting clearer between Mr. Melville and Katherine, she left without a word.

During the month she was gone, Mr. Melville, though still efficient at work, often seemed lost in thought, as if his soul was missing.

Now that they found Katherine, they learned she had married someone else.

For Mr. Melville, this was a huge blow!

Why did Katherine leave? Mr. Melville treated her so well. Why did she run away?

Katherine squinted, silent for a moment, then smirked. "Mr. Nelson, I appreciate your loyalty to Mr. Melville, but loyalty alone isn't enough; you need morals too. Mr. Melville and Miss Mitchell have a child, yet he still comes to bother me, trying to deceive my feelings. Don't you think that's immoral? And you, wanting to be loyal to Mr. Melville, can't persuade me to go back and be a homewrecker, right?"

She continued, "If Mr. Melville wants to cheat for some excitement, with his status, plenty of women would jump at the chance. But I'm not interested. Let him find someone else!"

Leander suddenly understood: Katherine left because of Miss Mitchell's child!

"Ms. Galatea, you misunderstand Mr. Melville. He..." Leander hesitated.

He wanted to explain, but the situation with Miss Mitchell's child was complicated, and it wasn't his place to speak.

Leander didn't finish, and Katherine didn't ask. She cleaned the coffee stains off herself, tossed the napkin into the car's trash bin, then turned to look out the window, yawning lazily.

"Whether it's a misunderstanding or not, it doesn't matter anymore. My relationship with Mr. Melville was just a contractual one due to an accident. Now that the contract is over, so is our relationship. Let's not disturb each other in the future," Katherine said.

Leander frowned, feeling helpless. Ms. Galatea was already married to someone else, and reconciliation seemed impossible.

But it was really unfair for Mr. Melville to be misunderstood as a jerk!

Leander thought for a moment and couldn't help but clarify. "Actually, Miss Mitchell's child isn't—"

Just then, the car door opened, and Alex's tall figure, carrying a bit of cold air, slid inside.

Leander's words were cut off, and he swallowed them back. "Mr. Melville, you're back."

Alex's expression was indifferent. "Drive."

"Wait," Katherine interrupted.

She turned to the man who had just gotten in and sat beside her, irritated. "Mr. Melville, why did you bring me into your car? If there's nothing, I want to get out!"

Alex didn't look at her. He took out a sleek metal cigarette case from his suit pocket, opened it with his long, well-defined fingers, and habitually tapped a cigarette against the case. His tone was clear and mocking. "What? Sitting in my car will dirty Ms. Galatea's precious body?"

His words were harsh, clearly picking a fight. Katherine frowned in displeasure. "That's not what I meant! I just think we're not familiar. Riding in your car for no reason can easily cause unnecessary misunderstandings!"

Not familiar!

Katherine really knew how to stab someone in the heart!

Alex didn't light the cigarette. His cold gaze swept towards her. "Ms. Galatea, do you dare to say again that we're not familiar? Have you forgotten that we were once familiar enough to sleep in the same bed?"

He seemed to be hinting at that unforgettable rainy night, filled with confusion and passion.

Katherine felt ashamed and angry, wanting to curse, but when she looked up and saw his current state, she was stunned. "You... how did you get hurt?"

Alex had a bruise on the corner of his mouth, a noticeable wound on his left eyebrow, and the most serious injury was his left eye, which had blood in the white.

What happened?

Alex, a man with power and influence, who would dare to lay a hand on him?

Alex shrugged it off and said lightly, "It's nothing; I accidentally bumped into something."

Katherine's eyes widened. "Nonsense! How could an accident cause this?"

Alex squinted at her and sneered. "Why not? Ms. Galatea can accidentally spill coffee on her head!"

Katherine was at a loss for words.

This man was really infuriating!

"Your eye is bleeding. No matter how it happened, you should go to the hospital!"

Out of humanitarian concern, Katherine suggested he go to the hospital, but she felt an indescribable feeling in her chest, tight and uncomfortable.

Alex squinted his eyes and said, "Alright, then I'll listen to Ms. Galatea and go to the hospital. We'll get checked together."

Together? Katherine felt a bit wary and asked, "I'm not hurt. What do I need to get checked for?"

Alex stared at her face, his deep, dark eyes slowly sliding down to her still-flat abdomen.

After a brief silence, Alex spoke meaningfully, "To check if you stole something from me."
