Chapter 651 Going Upstairs for a Drink
Sophia gave Jonathan a long look, a hint of admiration in her eyes. "Gotta say, I dig your vibe."
Jonathan just gave a small smile and asked, "What about you?"
Sophia blinked, confused. "What do you mean?"
Jonathan leaned in and asked, "What's your take on Alex? He's got a kid with Katherine, and you seem chill about it."
Sophia, feeling his honesty, decided to be straight up. "I don't mind. Worst case, the kid can stay with Alex and me. I think we're a good fit. Our personalities click, and we vibe well together. Sure, Alex might still have a thing for Katherine, but they don't mesh. They won't last. So, I'm betting he'll come around to me."
Jonathan gave her a genuine smile. "Good luck with that."
Sophia grinned back. "You too."
After driving a bit, Jonathan spotted a black car parked up ahead. He knew the license plate was the Melville Family's ride.
He pulled over, hopped out with Sophia, and knocked on the car window.
The window rolled down slowly, revealing Alex's cold profile.
Jonathan leaned in, scanning the inside, but no sign of Katherine. "Alex, where's Katherine?" he asked.
Alex turned slightly, his voice icy. "Why do you care?"
Jonathan pressed on, "Alex, cut the crap. I saw you take her on the surveillance. Where is she?"
Alex, looking bored, pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a drag. "She left."
"Where'd she go?" Jonathan's concern was clear.
Alex, holding the cigarette between his fingers, replied, "She didn't want me to take her back. She got out on her own. So I don't know where she is."
Jonathan was getting frustrated. "It's late! You let a pregnant woman walk home alone?"
Alex's eyebrows shot up. "Are you mad at me?"
Jonathan took a deep breath, realizing he was pushing it. "Sorry, just worried. Katherine's pregnant; you shouldn't leave her alone."
Alex's face was unreadable. "She wanted out. If I didn't let her go, she'd have jumped. "
Jonathan paused, then asked, "Did she get a cab?"
Alex blew out some smoke. "I don't know."
Knowing he wouldn't get more from Alex, Jonathan straightened up, scanned the area, and, not spotting Katherine, ran back to his car. He decided to drive around to find her or check if she made it home. In his rush, he didn't wait for Sophia.
Watching Jonathan's car peel out, Alex just squinted, his face as cold as ever.
Sophia strolled up to the window. "Alex, I came with Jonathan, but he ditched me, so I guess I'm riding with you."
Without even glancing at her, Alex took a drag from his cigarette and said flatly, "Get in."
Sophia's eyes flashed with a bit of smugness as she walked around, hopped in, and settled next to Alex.
Once she was in, Alex exhaled a puff of smoke and nodded to the driver, signaling to get moving. The car eased onto the road, cruising at a steady pace.
Sophia watched the city lights blur by, then turned to Alex, batting her eyes. "Alex, you seem off. Did you and Katherine have another spat?"
Alex didn't bite, just asked coldly, "Where to? Hotel or the party?"
Sophia pretended to think it over. "Let's head to the hotel. The party's winding down anyway. I'll call Hilton to handle the guests."
Alex grunted in acknowledgment, giving the driver a look through the rearview mirror.
The driver took the next turn, heading for Sophia's hotel.
Sophia pressed on, "Alex, is Katherine still giving you the cold shoulder?"
Alex stubbed out his cigarette. "Drop it."
Sophia sighed dramatically, "Katherine's got you all wrong. You're so good to her; she should see that. How can she not trust you?"
Alex sneered, his lips curling in sarcasm, but stayed silent.
Sophia tried a few more lines, but Alex wasn't having it, so she wisely shut up. No point in pushing her luck.
After about twenty minutes, the car pulled up to Sophia's hotel. The driver parked and turned around. "Sophia, we're here."
Sophia smiled, nodded, and got out. Before closing the door, she leaned in. "Alex, you seem down. Can't sleep at home? How about come up for a drink?"
Meanwhile, Jonathan had reached Katherine's place, ringing the doorbell like a madman, but no one answered. He called her, but her phone was off. Anxiety gnawed at him.
Suddenly, the door creaked open. Sunny, looking half-asleep, stood there, surprised. "Jonathan, what are you doing here?"
Jonathan didn't waste time explaining, barging in and searching the place. "Sunny, has Katherine come back?"
Sunny rubbed her eyes, confused. "Not yet. Wasn't she at Sophia's birthday bash?"
Hearing that, Jonathan's mind raced.
"Jonathan, what's going on? Didn't Katherine go to Sophia's party?" Sunny asked, puzzled.
Jonathan replied, "She did, but she left early. She should've been home by now."
