Chapter 267 Her New Husband

The guy's words got cut off by Katherine's phone ringing.

Katherine's dress didn't have pockets, so she was holding her phone.

She glanced at the screen. "Hubby" was calling. Should she answer?

Hubby?

She was shocked. When did she save a number as "Hubby"? Since when did she have a husband?

Just then, Alex's angry voice filled the car. "Is this why you vanished a month ago?"

Katherine snapped back to reality, seeing Alex glaring at her phone, his eyes blazing with rage.

She'd never seen him this furious and was momentarily stunned.

Alex's lips twisted into a cruel smile. "In just one month, you got a new husband. Impressive, Ms. Galatea!"

Katherine was speechless. She was just as confused!

"Answer it!" Alex's voice was icy.

Instead, Katherine hit the button to hang up.

The only thing she could think of was Frank messing with her phone.

It had to be Frank playing a prank, changing the contact name without her knowing.

She didn't want Alex to know about her connection with Frank and the Crescent Group.

So, she couldn't answer and let Alex hear Frank's voice.

Seeing her hang up, Alex sneered, "Scared to answer? Afraid your new husband will find out you're with your ex?"

Ex-husband?

Katherine found it odd Alex called himself her ex-husband.

His sarcastic tone made her uncomfortable. After a moment, she decided she didn't owe him an explanation. "I'm not answering! We fought, and I don't want to forgive him yet!"

Alex was taken aback, his eyes darkening.

If Katherine had acted lovey-dovey, he might've thought she was faking it, using the husband as an excuse.

But a fight? That was real, something that happens between close people.

She really had a husband!

Alex's face was cold, his tone chilling. "Who is he? When did it start?"

Katherine cleared her throat. "Mr. Melville, my husband is none of your business! During our partnership, I never betrayed you or brought you shame. I left because our partnership ended three months ago, not a day more, not a second less!"

Alex's jaw tightened. "Katherine, you're impressive!"

Katherine felt a bit guilty for implying she had a husband, but then she remembered how Alex had deceived her.

Feeling vengeful, she lifted her chin defiantly. "You're too kind!"

The car finally exited the highway, ending the torturous ride.

Katherine spoke up, "Thanks. Please pull over and let me out. I'll take a cab home."

But the driver didn't stop.

Leander, in the front seat, pretended not to hear.

He wouldn't dare stop without Mr. Melville's orders.

Realizing this, Katherine turned to Alex. "Mr. Melville, could you have your driver pull over?"

Alex didn't look at her. "Address."

Katherine was taken aback, realizing he wanted her address.

She didn't want him to know, so she said, "No need, Mr. Melville. Thanks for getting me off the highway. I can take a cab from here."

She didn't give her address, and Alex didn't push. He just told the driver, "Head to the home."

"Yes, Mr. Melville," the driver replied.

The Melville estate? Was he serious? She didn't want to go there!

Grinding her teeth, Katherine reluctantly said, "Crabapple Mansion."

Alex nodded and signaled to Leander.

Leander got the message and told the driver to head to Crabapple Mansion.

He had overheard the conversation and felt a bit sorry for Mr. Melville. After a month of searching, he found out she had a new husband? That had to sting.

Soon, they arrived at Crabapple Mansion.

Katherine quickly said, "Thanks for the ride, Mr. Melville. Take care!" She jumped out of the car and hurried inside.

Leander was about to ask Mr. Melville what to do next, but Alex had already gotten out and was following her.

He probably didn't believe she had a husband and wanted to see for himself.

Katherine waited for the elevator, got in, and pressed her floor. Just as the doors were closing, a large hand stopped them.

The doors opened, and Alex walked in, looking calm.

Katherine frowned. "Mr. Melville, why are you following me?"

Alex's tone was flat. "I'm thirsty. I'm going to Ms. Galatea's for a glass of water. I don't think Ms. Galatea would mind."

Katherine was silent. Who said she didn't mind? She minded a lot! What was Alex up to?

The elevator was already going up, but Katherine still tried to resist. "Mr. Melville, it's late. As a single woman, it's really inconvenient to invite a man upstairs. It wouldn't look good if someone saw us."

Alex looked down at her with sharp eyes. "Don't you have a husband at home? Afraid I'll eat you?"

Katherine didn't respond.

Helpless, she let him in. She knew no matter what excuse she made, Alex wouldn't give up. He was that stubborn.

Inside, she changed into slippers and said, "Mr. Melville, make yourself at home. I'll get you some coffee."

Alex watched her walk into the kitchen. He stepped into the living room, not sitting but surveying the place.

Prime floor, prime layout, great view. Could Katherine, fresh out of college, afford a place like this? Did she really have a husband? And this a newlywed home?

But there were no signs of a husband—no photos or no wedding pictures, no men's shoes or belongings in the living room. The decor was feminine, not like a couple's home.

Just as Alex was doubting, he heard a noise from the bedroom. Was there really a man here?

Alex frowned and turned to look.
