Chapter 525 Ignore Him
His expression was unreadable, and he gazed at Katherine.
Fiona closed her mouth. She had seen Alex's reaction when he thought Katherine was dead and knew how important Katherine was to him. She understood that his feelings must be very complicated right now, and it was best not to get involved!
Katherine walked towards Alex. She called out to him gently, "Alex."
As she got closer, she noticed Alex had an unlit cigarette between his fingers.
She wasn't sure if it was because he couldn't smoke in the hospital or for some other reason.
It seemed like he hadn't smoked in a long time.
Alex's expression remained unreadable as he tossed the unlit cigarette into a nearby trash can. Then he took off his jacket and draped it over Katherine's shoulders.
He said nothing and turned to leave.Katherine frowned slightly and followed him.
Even Fiona, who was usually oblivious, sensed the tension between Alex and Katherine. She didn't dare follow too closely and trailed behind them from a safe distance.
All the way, Alex and Katherine didn't say a word.
Meanwhile, in the morgue...
Billy only dared to come in with his crutches after seeing that the situation inside had calmed down. "Mr. Mitchell, the doctor said you shouldn't put weight on your injured foot..." he reminded, concerned.
Bernard said nothing, calmly taking the crutches and placing them under his arms.
However, seeing this, Vincent and Hellen couldn't stay calm!
Hellen hurried over and asked, "What's going on? Bernard, what happened to your foot?"
Bernard replied indifferently, "It's nothing, just a minor injury. It'll heal with some rest. No need to worry, Grandma."
Hellen couldn't help but worry. "If it's just a minor injury, why do you need crutches? It must be more serious than that!" she chided.
They knew Bernard well; he would never honestly reveal the true extent of his injuries. Hellen frowned and questioned Billy, "Billy, tell me! What happened to Bernard's foot?"
Billy knew Bernard didn't want Hellen and Vincent to worry, so he tried to keep his explanation simple. "Mrs. Mitchell, Bernard Mitchell's injury is really not serious. You don't need to worry too much. I'll take good care of Bernard Mitchell during his recovery."
Hellen sensed something was off and didn't let it go. "I'm not asking about the severity of Bernard's injury. I want to know how he got hurt! I've watched him grow up; he's always been careful. He couldn't have just fallen by accident!" she pressed further.
Billy was in a bit of a bind. "Well..."
He looked to Bernard for guidance.
Bernard, however, was lost in thought, his mind elsewhere, and didn't give Billy any instructions.
Hellen could see that Billy was afraid to speak truthfully in front of Bernard, so she found an excuse by sending Bernard to the car to get Vincent's blood pressure medication.
Bernard, already distracted, nodded obediently and left upon hearing Hellen's instructions.
Seeing Bernard leave, Billy instinctively wanted to follow, but Hellen grabbed him. "Billy, stay here with us for a while!" she insisted.
Billy looked troubled.
At this moment, Bernard was preoccupied with thoughts of Katherine's condition and didn't notice that Hellen had stopped Billy. He walked out alone.
Once Bernard was gone, Hellen seized the opportunity to question Billy, "Billy, tell me the truth now! How did Bernard get the injury? Is it serious?"
Billy, wanting to reassure Hellen and Vincent, didn't dare leave.
Although was just an unused room the hospital had set up for Katherine to use as a fake morgue, it still gave off quite an eerie vibe from years of disuse. It wasn't a good place for the elderly to stay.
Billy said, "Mrs. Mitchell, I wasn't lying to you earlier. Bernard Mitchell's foot injury isn't serious. As long as he rests properly, it won't cause any long-term issues. You can rest assured, Bernard Mitchell wouldn't play around when it regards his health!"
Hellen wasn't easily fooled. "Billy, stop beating around the bush. I'm asking how Bernard got injured!" she demanded sternly.
Billy fell silent.
There was no doubt that Bernard didn't want him to tell Hellen and Vincent.
But he had no where to escape now. "Mrs. Mitchell, Mr. Vincent Mitchell, this place is quite cold. It's not good for you two to stay here. How about I take you to a more conducive area to talk?"
He deliberately changed the topic.
Hellen insisted on staying. "We don't believe in all that nonsense! Tell me right here and now how Bernard got injured. Otherwise, we won't leave!"
Billy had no choice but to tell the truth. "Alright, Mrs. Mitchell, here's what happened. Before Sophie caused today's incident, she had already planned another accident to harm Katherine. Three days ago, when Katherine was leaving the Mitchell family, Bernard Mitchell was seeing her off.
"Suddenly, a car came out of nowhere, aiming to hit Katherine. Bernard Mitchell got hit by the van while he was trying to save her. That's how Mr. Bernard Mitchell injured his foot. Mrs. Mitchell, Mr. Mitchell, Bernard Mitchell didn't want me to tell you this because he was afraid you'd blame Katherine. So please, pretend you don't know."
After hearing Billy's explanation, Hellen still felt something was off. She exchanged a knowing glance with Vincent, and they both sensed that something very unusual was happening.
Hellen then asked, "Why does Bernard care so much about Katherine? He's never been this attentive to any girl before, except maybe showing some kindness to Scarlett! Could it be that he really wants to compete with Alex from the Melville family for a woman?"
Vincent added, "Although we like Katherine, this kind of thing shouldn't happen between our families! Bernard isn't the type to lose his principles over a girl. Billy, tell us, why does Bernard care so much about Katherine to the point that he got himself injured from saving her? I remember he didn't think much of Katherine before!"
This question put Billy in an even more difficult position. He couldn't reveal Katherine's true identity.
Bernard had strictly instructed that Katherine didn't want anyone to know her identity for now. This information must not be released, or Katherine will be upset and ignore Bernard again.
"Billy, what are you hesitating for? Speak up!" Vincent pressed, sensing something was wrong.
